PODIATRISTS AND PODCASTS
IN Podiatrist Discusses Emerging Foot Surgery Trends

On his podcast Fit Foot U, Ben Pearl, DPM interviewed Patrick DeHeer, DPM. Dr. DeHeer drew on his experience in practice and as a residency director at St. Vincent’s Hospital. They discussed topics ranging from surgical correction of the pediatric flat foot, Lapiplasty, and MIS surgery to complications and residency training.

DeHeer emphasized to reassure parents that a child’s foot is normally flexible, and fat and flat until the arch starts to develop at age 4. On lapiplasty, he said that he does not need the extra equipment to perform what is essentially a Lapidus procedure and that shortening of the first metatarsal is common. He closed by encouraging residents and clinicians to leave their residency and the profession better than they found it.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

5 Common Billing Mistakes to Avoid

It’s easy to make small mistakes when billing. Unfortunately, small mistakes can sometimes cost you big money. Fortunately, it might not be as difficult as you think to avoid them. Here are five ways to prevent some of the most common - and costly - billing mistakes.

2. Bill the right payer. This may sound like a no-brainer, but it’s actually an easy mistake to make. Karen Lake, healthcare consultant with Pearce, Bevill, Leesburg, Moore offers a good example of how this can happen. Say a patient comes in and gives you his Medicare card. The front desk carefully records the information, and billing submits the charge to Medicare. But the claim is rejected, maybe even from the clearinghouse. The problem? The patient thinks he’s on Medicare, but his policy is actually with Blue Cross, UnitedHealthcare, or another Medicare Advantage plan. The easiest way to avoid this kind of mistake is to always verify insurance at check-in.

OBITUARIES
RE: The Passing of William F. Munsey, DPM

Dr. William F. Munsey passed away on June,14, 2024 at the age of 92. He earned his DPM degree at the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine. This was followed by a six-month internship with Dr. D. Wayne Myers of Lima, Ohio. Dr. Munsey opened his practice in Worthington, OH where he practiced for forty years, providing general and surgical podiatric care until his retirement in 1996.

Dr. William Munsey

He served as president and chairman of the board of trustees for the Ohio Podiatric Medical Association and was later elected President of the American Podiatric Medical Association. He also served as President of Podiatry Insurance Company of America before becoming Vice President for over a decade. He was also the President of the Fund for Podiatry Education and Research and was a board member for over 10 years. RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)

Dr. Stark was truly one of the good ones. He was an ambassador for our profession and represented podiatry with class. He was a mentor to the young docs trying to establish themselves in the community. I loved talking to him because he always made you feel good about your profession choice. He always asked about my personal life because he knew what the pressures of a new practice were. God bless you Allan, and your family. We have lost one of our best.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL)
From: Ivar E. Roth, DPM, MPH

While Dr. Lang makes some good points, until you have practiced direct pay/concierge podiatry, you cannot understand what we go through. As a concierge podiatrist, we are all about service. I instituted a no-show fee a few years ago. While we rarely impose the fees if the patient makes any effort to contact us, there are some patients who are abusive, and so we bill them and they pay.

Some learn their lessons, some never come back, and that is okay. It is all about patient responsibility.  As direct pay doctors, we take our practices seriously, and therefore we expect the same from our patients. Allowing no shows and very late shows to disrupt our practice is just not tolerated and that is the way it has to be in this modern world.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (N0N-CLINICAL)
RE: Testing Applicants for Podiatry School
From: Richard Silverstein, DPM

As a father of a child who is applying to dental school, the application process has been eye-opening to me. On the DAT (dental college admission test), there are sections that test the ability of the applicant to convey spatial relationships with objects and to be able to think in three dimensions as you rotate different objects according to the questions at hand. They also want to know what kinds of activities the applicant participates in to develop fine motor skills and dexterity. Some examples include sewing, woodworking, molding clay, or playing piano/violin. This information is added onto the application directly. Do we ask similar questions on the podiatric applications?

They obviously are assessing the potential skill level of working in a tight spot without being able to always visualize the teeth and gums. If an applicant can’t think like this, then they likely will have difficulty in mastering the skills necessary to become...

Editor's note: Dr. Silverstein's extended-length letter can be read here.
