AT THE COLLEGES |
DMU-CPMS Announces Alumna of the Year
The Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery (DMU-CPMS) has announced this year's Alumni of the Year and Rising Star honorees. Selected by the DMU Alumni Board of Directors and University leadership, this year's honorees have advanced their professions and improved patient care. Shari Nichols, DPM ('95) is a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon with United Health Services Podiatry in Vestal, New York.

Dr. Shari Nichols |
She completed her residency at Yale-New Haven in a newly expanded three-year surgical program. Nichols then returned to upstate New York to build her career, first in private practice and then helping grow United Health Services' (UHS) podiatry program, which only had one provider at the time. Over her two decades in practice, Dr. Nichols has served as a clinician, department chair, and director of both the residency and wound care programs at UHS.

Stretching Can Protect Your Knee, Hips, and Ankle Joints: KY Podiatrist
It should come as no surprise that stretching is an important means of protecting the knee joints. However, Nicole Freels, DPM, a double board-certified podiatrist and the CEO and Founder at Modern Podiatrist emphasizes that it’s crucial to stretch not only the knee area but also the hips, ankles, and other surrounding muscles.
|
Dr. Nicole Freels |
“Most people don’t realize that equinus at the ankle creates issues proximally to the knee and hip. If you don’t have adequate range of motion at the ankle joint, then the knee and hip have to compensate by using their hip flexors longer throughout the timing of the gait cycle,” she explains. “Over time, the knee begins to contract and you’re not able to fully extend it,” the podiatrist adds.

PODIATRISTS IN POLITICS |
AK Podiatrist Enters Alaska Governor's Race
Matt Heilala, DPM, an Anchorage podiatrist who serves on the state medical board, is the sixth Republican to enter Alaska’s 2026 governor’s race. Current Republican Gov. Mike Dunleavy is termed out from seeking re-election. Heilala has never held public office, but he is a frequent donor to Republican candidates and causes. No registered Democrat has entered the race.

Dr. Matt Heilala |
Dunleavy appointed Dr. Heilala — a foot and ankle surgeon — to the Alaska Medical Board in 2021. In a media release Friday, Heilala wrote he is “fed up with the current extreme partisanship in politics. Elected officials can respect differing opinions, build trust, and find common ground without abandoning principles.”

RELEVANT RESEARCH |
New Angiogenesis Inhibitors Have Potential To Treat Melanomas and Skin Diseases
A research team led by scientists at the University of California, Irvine, has discovered new drug compounds that can block blood-vessel branching in both skin and tumors. The compounds work by blocking proteins needed to form new blood vessels, a process known as angiogenesis, the researchers report in the study published in the journal iScience.
Anti-angiogenesis drugs have long been used to block tumor growth in many types of cancer. Yet they are largely ineffective at treating melanoma, the most aggressive skin cancer. Most skin tumors need to develop a blood supply to grow beyond 1 millimeter in depth. The researchers focused on compounds with the potential to disrupt two particular molecular switches thought to control blood-vessel branching in the skin, CDC42 and RhoJ, said corresponding author and UCI Health dermatologist Anand Ganesan, MD, PhD.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Stop Guessing, Start Profiting
Unlock hidden insights in your practice's data to boost revenue, streamline operations, and enhance patient care with simple, effective strategies.
9. Sharpen inventory management.
Match supply usage to procedure counts. Knowing the exact number of sutures per laceration repair prevents pricey overnight orders. “Controlling your inventory” breaks down a low-tech approach. Read the article.

QUERIES (CLASS ACTION LAWSUITS) |
Query: BC/BS Class Action Settlement (Howard Dinowitz, DPM)
My office manager is concerned BCBS will drop us if we sign up with the Class Action Settlement. BCBS is our best-paying insurance company and we do not want to be dropped from this insurance plan.
Florida Podiatrist
Editor’s comment: PM News does not provide legal advice. In a class action settlement, the defendant generally admits no guilt but agrees to pay a stipulated amount to eligible plaintiffs who file a claim and have not opted out of the settlement. In this case, if it could be proven that BC/BS dropped a provider strictly because the provider filed a valid claim, most courts would consider this “retaliatory” and would subject BC/BS further litigation. Since thousands of claims have already been filed, it’s hard to imagine BC/BS taking this action. Finally, the settlement money from any valid claimant who fails to file merely gets distributed to those who filed valid claims.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL) - PART 1 |
From: Kristin Happel
When our office takes any kind of cultures, biopsies, etc., we always have the patients sign a form (usually provided by the lab we are sending the specimen to), which clearly states we are sending the specimen, why we are doing so, and that the patient consents to this. Perhaps take a look at your office procedures, to make sure you are doing the same.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL) - PART 2 |
From: Joseph Borreggine, DPM
Why is EBM Medical’s business model not implicated by Anti-Kickback Statutes or Stark Laws? The Anti-Kickback Statute [42 U.S.C. § 1320a-7b(b)] prohibits the knowing and willful payment of “remuneration” to induce or reward patient referrals or the generation of business involving any item or service payable by the Federal healthcare programs (e.g., drugs, supplies, or healthcare services for Medicare or Medicaid patients). Similarly, the Physician Self-Referral Law, commonly referred to as the Stark law [42 U.S.C. § 1395nn], prohibits physicians from referring patients to receive “designated health services” payable by Medicare or Medicaid from entities with which the physician or an immediate family member has a financial relationship, unless an exception applies.
In both instances, the application of the Anti-Kickback Statute and the Stark Law is predicated on a health service that is covered and reimbursed by a federal healthcare program. Because the products available through EBM Medical’s proprietary software platform are not covered by federal healthcare program and EBM Medical does not receive any payments from...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC EDUCATION) |
From: Lawrence Oloff, DPM
Rod, thank you for your continued devotion to podiatric medicine, but I do have some concerns about your statements. First off is your information about the number of [podiatry] schools. When you stated there are "25 or 30" (actually there are 11, and one of these schools is a public institution). While I agree with your premise on the number of schools, I think it is important to be accurate about what you state. Also, my understanding is that CPME only has the ability to decide whether or not a school meets their criteria. I do not believe it has the ability to tell a school to open or not. I would like to hear from a higher authority on whether my information is correct. If it is, then how do you influence a private entity from opening a school if we have no jurisdiction over that decision?
I always wondered whether all these posts are social media or whether they are accessible online by the public. Maybe someone can answer that. Your information you keep posting is interesting but its extensiveness and persistence sometimes feels like a diatribe against...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICARE FRAUD) |
RE: Inside the DOJ's Largest-ever Healthcare Takedown
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM
A recent Medical Economics article provides a detailed review of the Dept. of Justice's recent indictment of hundreds of conspirators who committed $14.6B (you read that right) in Medicare fraud. This not only threatens the Medicare Trust fund, but should be an affront to every honest medical practitioner and beneficiary.
I have asked the FBI and other law enforcement officers what took them so long when these types of investigations are presented at meetings. Again, we should all be asking law enforcement why there are not mathematical formulas in place which prevent runaway payment of new or established DME or other Medicare providers? Why are they not subject to pre-payment reviews for CPT and HCPCS codes which are often abused?
DME was not the only subject of concern; there were several providers who were indicted for abuse of allografts, others for genetic testing, and still others for hospice care.
Paul Kesselman, DPM, Oceanside, NY

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM ARTICLES) |
From: Lawrence Rubin, DPM
A few weeks ago, I read a convincing article in Podiatry Management Magazine that portends podiatry's potential demise if there is continued low matriculation of students in our colleges. Then, a few days ago, I saw a LinkedIn post from APMA in which podiatrists attending a major convention were celebrating the fact that podiatry has never been more viable and successful than now and can look forward to a marvelous future.
While I have deep feelings wanting APMA and these podiatrists to be right, something tells me that we should not ignore our failure to attract students and the possible adverse consequences of this occurring.
