NY Podiatrist Discusses Dealing with Sweaty Summer Feet
Like the rest of your body, your feet may produce more sweat in the summer, says podiatrist Jacqueline Sutera, DPM, making for potentially unpleasant and stinky experiences. “As the temperature increases, so does our body’s temperature, and then we sweat to regulate our temperature,” Dr. Sutera says. “Sweating is normal and natural, but when it's excessive, and when it makes you smell, then that's when people get very self-conscious.”
|
|
Dr. Jacqueline Sutera |
“On top of increased sweat production, substances like rubber [flip-flops] that you may wear more of during the summer don’t absorb sweat. So you could find yourself sloshing around in a pool of your own sweat. If you think your foot sweating is problematic, there are a few steps you can take. First, some sweat and odor problems do require medical attention, like odor caused by an infection. So if yours have recently become extra stinky, consider making a visit to your podiatrist to rule this out,” says Dr. Sutera.

Podiatrists Among Top 5 Unusual Jobs with Good Salaries
Whatever career you choose, your job becomes a big part of your life. It may even form part of your identity, letting others know about your values, your skills, and your interests. If you think a work path that’s a bit more unusual may suit you, you have plenty of options. You can pick a non-traditional job with a salary that allows you to live comfortably. Earlier this year, the job site Indeed came out with a list of 15 of these jobs.
#4. Podiatrist -Podiatrists are medical professionals who can provide diagnosis and treatment for problems of the foot and ankle. They relieve pain, prevent deformities, and perform surgery. Podiatrists have degrees from accredited podiatric medical colleges. They must take state and national exams and be licensed, which means this is a job that requires quite a bit of education and experience. However, as with many healthcare-related professions, they are in demand more than ever.

VA Podiatrist Discusses Ankle Flexibilty with Olympic Swimmer
Ben Pearl, DPM discussed training solutions for triathletes with ankle problems with Gary Hall, a former Olympic swimmer and current swim coach. The ankle can develop swelling sometimes accompanied by adhesions in the synovial capsule to the underlying bone. This can result in painful plantarflexion of the ankle. Another issue that can occur is anterior ankle impingement, which limits dorsiflexion.

Hall said that for distance swimmers, ankle range of motion is less critical than for sprinters. Distance swimmers can compensate for decreased motion by increasing arm turnover rate. He mentioned that natural swimmers tend to have more flexible ankles, which is a tactical advantage, while triathletes with a stronger running background tend to have more tight ankles.

Mastering the Science of Patient Financial Engagement
Here are some ways physicians can more effectively encourage patients to pay their bill by leaning into a behavioral science-based approach.
5. Know your audience. What is the patient’s past history of medical payment? Which patients are most likely to respond to digital payment—and how quickly do they tend to do so? What proportion of your population still prefers paper-based communication? All of these data-based factors will inform how you communicate with specific populations and how often. For instance, if there is a high likelihood that a patient will not pay the amount owed after insurance, the practice may choose not to incur the expense of sending multiple paper statements or digital texts.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (DME) | |
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM
I have had considerable discussion with AOPA and navigated discussions between AOPA and APMA to ensure that APMA has had the opportunity to discuss this important legislation. This is not the first year AOPA has presented this legislation to Congress, but hopefully with sufficient bipartisan support it will pass. APMA has previously supported this legislation. In May, APMA discussed this legislation during the APMA Health Policy committee meeting after APMA had held discussions with AOPA and other DME stakeholders involved in providing orthotics to patients.
This legislation, as Dr. Richie notes, precludes the drop shipment of orthotics, which often increases the same or similar problem with many criminal enterprises submitting claims for devices either never submitted or using marketing schemes and providing unnecessary devices to unsuspecting patients. But there is more to this legislation. It also supports separating orthotics from DME such as wheelchairs, walkers, etc.
This separation and placement of orthotics into their own category can hopefully remove the stranglehold of the minimal useful lifetime which has created such havoc better known as Same or Similar. By placing orthotics into their own category, as are prosthetics, the hope is that replacement devices can simply be substantiated by medical necessity, without automatic claim denials requiring lengthy appeals. Contact your Congressional delegation and provide them with your rationale for supporting this important piece of legislation
Disclaimer: The opinions provided here are my personal recommendations and should not be seen as the official position of APMA.

RE: Retirement of Norman Wortzman, DPM
From: Adam Landsman, DPM, PhD
I would like to announce that Dr. Norman Wortzman has finally decided to take his retirement! Dr. Wortzman has served as the lead podiatrist at Massachusetts General Hospital and been a clinician here for over 25 years. Under his direction, the podiatric service has grown and expanded its reach with increased surgical privileges and developed a podiatric research program which included students from several of the colleges of podiatric medicine.
He will be deeply missed by his many, many grateful patients, staff, and colleagues. Best wishes Norm!

From: James Koon, DPM
I’ve billed 11730 maybe 5 times in a 25 year career. If it’s infected and clinically appropriate, 11750. If it’s just the corner, bang it out under ethyl chloride anesthesia. If it’s a recurrent problem, 11750. It’s moral, ethical, and almost always definitive.
Wouldn’t you want one and done if it were you?

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2B | |
From: Lawrence Rubin, DPM
I want to thank Dr. Ressler for his, “Killing the Chicken Who Lays the Golden Eggs” story. He witnessed the flagrant abuse and outright fraud in the early 1980s that occurred when all too many podiatrists abused the billing of CPT code 11730 - nail avulsion.
It is so sad that even now, because of this long ago situation, it is no longer a question of whether or not a podiatrist will be subjected to a random or targeted audit of 11730 coding and billing. It is more a question of when this audit will occur. But this is not the end of the Golden Egg story. Things got worse.
In the early 1980s, the abuse...
