VA Podiatrist Meets with Governor, Congresswoman to Discuss HELLPP Act
Dr. Stanley Idiculla, a Northern Virginia podiatrist, recently met with Congresswoman Barbara Comstock and Governor Nikki Haley in Mclean, VA.

(L-R) Governor Nikki Haley, Dr. Stanley Idiculla, and Congresswoman Barbara Comstock |
Idiculla has built relationships with elected officials in his home state and nationally in an ongoing effort to promote podiatry and help gain co-sponsors such as Congressman Barbara Comstock for the HELLPP Act (HR 1221/S 626). "As podiatrists, it is our responsibility to make aware the field of podiatry to the medical and political community. We need to educate and gain support, allowing the profession to grow," says Idiculla.

Guide for Diabetic Foot Care |
Dr. Maasi J Smith recently published his second book, Feet Naturally: Guide for Diabetic Foot Care. The purpose of Feet Naturally is to help individuals with diabetes understand and avoid common foot complications that podiatrists see regularly in our practice. Podiatrists are dedicated physicians of foot health, and we are constantly exploring ways to educate those in need. This book is a contribution to the health of our nation, based on the idea that "a well-informed society is a healthier society."

OR Podiatrist Has Impressive Record of Marathons and Ironmans Completed
Dr. John Mozena, of Lake Oswego and has worked out of his offices at the Town Center Foot Clinic in Happy Valley since 1985, has competed in 10 full Ironmans and 25 half Ironmans since 2007; and he has run 25 marathons since completing his first 26.2-mile race in 2002.

Mozena trains the year around, many times two to three times a day, conditioning with his running, swimming, and cycling workouts. Mozena’s hard work and dedication paid dividends earlier this year — at an Ironman half triathlon race in Monterrey, Mexico, in March; and again in April, at an Ironman 70.3 mile race in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Flimsy Summer Shoes Mean More Injured Feet: MN Podiatrists
It’s finally summer in the Northland, and flip-flops, sandals, and other open-toed shoes are ubiquitous. That’s not entirely a good thing, say health experts who know about feet. “Flip-flops, sandals — the majority of them are not made properly,” said Dr. Kirsten Moore, a podiatrist with the Essentia Health-Duluth Clinic. “They’re very flimsy. They don’t have proper arch support.”
|
|
Drs. Kirsten Moore and Ryan Reinking |
Exposed feet can be easily injured feet, said Dr. Ryan Reinking, a podiatrist with Orthopaedic Associates of Duluth. “You run into all sorts of issues if you’re trying to do too much in them,” said Reinking. “Stress fractures and ligament damage in the front of the foot are among the risks,” he said.

Bret Ribotsky: What is your vision for the future of podiatry?
|
|
Dr. Thomas Sgarlato |
Thomas Sgarlato: I see podiatry becoming integrated within the general medical arena. That is the direction that I see coming. I’m not worried about podiatrists still keeping their particular arena active because it takes a long time to learn how to treat feet. Feet are complex. This is not an easy area to treat and somebody has to do it.

Query: Diabetic Foot Infection Presentation
Does anyone know of a source for a PowerPoint presentation on diabetic foot infection that is suitable for a continuing medical education program for a hospital medical staff? This presentation will be done for nurses, doctors, and PAs to familiarize them with how podiatrists treat this problem.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) | |
From: Lester J. Jones, DPM
The podiatric medical profession has lost a true leader and consistent advocate for the application of podiatric biomechanics in research, clinical podiatric practice, and operative management of practically every procedure performed by foot and ankle surgeons of this generation, and those of the past.
Thomas Sgarlato, DPM, along with Merton Root, DPM, John Weed, DPM, and several other contemporary members formed the Podiatric Biomechanics Department at the California College of Podiatric Medicine (CCPM). It was during that period of time at CCPM that...

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) | |
From: Elliot Udell, DPM
It’s not that electronic medical records as an entity lead to physician burnout. It's the type of EMRs that are government-regulated which cause added stress to physicians and interfere with the time that physicians spend with patients.
I used Medinotes for over 15 years. It worked well and enabled me to create great notes, keep track of my patients, and render great care to all of them. Now that I have to use a program that meets government "specs", I have to jump through multiple windows to do anything and search like a detective to find past info on patients. Yes, this causes me added stress and lessens the time I spend with patients. I only wish that the next presidential administration will review what it mandates from EMR programs and make sure they are user-friendly and increase, not decrease, the quality of medical care.
Elliot Udell, DPM, Hicksville, NY
