The loss of Thomas Sgarlato, DPM
The podiatric medical profession has lost a true leader and consistent advocate for the application of podiatric biomechanics in research, clinical podiatric practice, and operative management of practically every procedure performed by foot and ankle surgeons of this generation, and those of the past. Thomas Sgarlato, DPM, along with Merton Root, DPM, John Weed, DPM, and several other contemporary members who formed the Podiatric Biomechanics Department at the California College of Podiatric Medicine (CCPM). It was during that period of time at CCPM that I was a student, resident, and fellow (1975-77).
Dr. Sgarlato's team members provided trainees with the basic foundation and advance thought that would sustain a life-time of successful clinical practice for all who payed attention and diligently applied those principles. I am so fortunate to have had that opportunity, because he along with the other members of CCPM teaching faculty provided me with the essential tools for a successful career as a practitioner, educator, academic administrator and hospital administrator. As a young kid growing up in San Francisco, I knew of Dr. Sgarlato as the foot surgeon that operated on three of my childhood friends for for equinus deformity back in the early to mid 1960s. Little did I know at the time, the he would actually become a mentor along with so many other colleagues in our profession.
As I began my current academic leadership role at Western University College of Podiatric Medicine, Dr. Sgarlato sent me an advance copy of his latest text book with a personal note. That act of kindness will remain a special treasure for the remainder of my life. To the family of Dr. Thomas Sgarlato, DPM, please accept my deepest condolences for your loss. Lester J. Jones, DPM, Altadena, CA
