IPMA Podiatrists Volunteer at Avon Walk for Breast Cancer
Podiatric physicians from the Illinois Podiatric Medical Association (IPMA) recently volunteered at the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer held in Chicago in June. The group of volunteer podiatrists treated more than 250 participants for sprained ankles, blisters, and other foot ailments that otherwise would have kept the walkers from participating. Volunteer podiatrists were: Drs. Debra Young, Michael Hriljac, Kathleen Daly, (Team Captain), Neil Horsely, Bart Beaver, John Schwab, Alice Cisneros. and Jondelle Jenkins.

In addition, more than 250 breast cancer survivors and 300 men joined together to contribute to the millions that was raised by all Avon Walks in 2015.

DC Podiatrist Discusses Prevention of Athlete's Foot
It may seem a minor irritant, but untreated athlete's foot can create skin fissures that become infected, says Dr. Stephen Pribut, a Washington podiatrist. One sure sign of infection: oozing pus. Instead of going barefoot at the pool or in public showers, wear flip-flops. As for hot-weather workouts, you might think cotton socks would be best - but they're not, Pribut says. Opt instead for "wickable" fabrics, made from synthetic fibers or merino wool, that allow moisture to move away from the skin. (If you prefer cotton socks, make sure they're clean, and take them off right after you exercise.)

As for shoes for workouts and general use, choose those that "allow your feet to breathe," Pribut suggests. After a workout or a sweaty walk from the pool, thoroughly wash and dry your feet, especially between the toes.

No Data to Support or Refute Claims About "Fat" Shoes: CA Podiatrist
There’s no data to support or refute fat shoes will keep you injury free; they’re too new, says sports podiatrist Dr. Kevin Kirby. Recently, Kirby gave a talk at the Western States 100-Mile Endurance Race on foot-strike patterns of ultrarunners. Fat shoes, he thinks, could be helpful for ultramarathoners and runners who log an inordinate amount of downhills.
|
|
Dr. Kevin Kirby |
By some accounts, 30 percent of runners now swear by fat shoes. Then again, five years ago everyone thought minimalist shoes would be the injury-plagued runner’s salvation. Then the research caught up to the trend and proved that the shoes weren’t helping much. The Takeaway: Give fat shoes a try if you think they’ll help, suggests Kirby. Just keep in mind that what works for some doesn’t necessarily work for all.

No More 'Existential' Court Threats to ACA, Experts Say
Robert Schapiro and Ilya Shapiro are two constitutional law experts with similar last names and dissimilar views on interpreting the nation's legal blueprint. The two men agree, however, that in the wake of the Supreme Court decision to uphold premium subsidies under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in all states, and not just some, the controversial law no longer runs the risk of judicial death.
"I think we're done with 'existential' legal threats," said Shapiro, a senior fellow in constitutional studies at the Cato Institute and a critic of the court's ruling. "We'll see lots of other cases, both big and small, but they probably won't aim at the heart of Obamacare's constitutionality or operation."

Five Reasons the Future for Private Practice Is Bright - Part 1
Here are five reasons why private practice will remain healthy for the foreseeable future:
1. The trend of hospitals buying physician practices is not as strong as it once was.
While it's true that hospitals and integrated delivery systems have purchased physician practices since well before Congress passed the Affordable Care Act in 2010, some hospitals also have lost money on these acquisitions. Some say the losses total as much as $100,000 per physician, per year. Also, some physicians are not happy being employed by these larger systems.

RE: Nail Splitting Post P&A
I performed bilateral phenol/alcohol nail matrixectomies on a 15 year old female approximately 6 months ago. Since then, the patient has developed splitting of her nail plate transversely at the midpoint of the nailplate. This is of concern to her mother, primarily for aesthetic reasons. The teenager is an avid dancer. I don't recall having such a response in any previous nail surgery performed over 34 years. Any suggestions to improve the situation?
|
|
| QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL) | |
Yesterday's PM News contained a story about a podiatrist who offered a suggestion to a patient on Facebook. The patient thanked the podiatrist for his suggestion since she had a positive outcome. Let’s assume, for a moment, that the outcome was not positive and she decides to take legal action. Along with suing her own local podiatrist who performed the surgery, can she sue the other podiatrist for his comment on Facebook?
Most MedMal insurance companies advise against podiatrists responding to specific questions on their respective websites or about being too chatty on public websites. Reader thoughts?

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A | |
From: Evan Meltzer, DPM
I was in private practice for 20 years and can well relate to Dr. Sherman’s comments. When I signed a contract with an insurance company to be a participating provider, I believed I would be promptly paid for services rendered according to the negotiated fee schedule.
What I subsequently discovered was considerable frustration, including multiple requests to re-submit the same claim. More valuable staff time was required to deal with these insurance companies and to “beg Dad” for the money owed. This factor eventually drove me to sell my private practice.
There is not a day that goes by that I am not thankful that I am a salaried employee of the government (although the level of salary of a VA podiatrist is another issue). I am free to treat our veteran patients and to train podiatry residents to the best of my abilities without the hassle of having to “ask Dad for money.”
Evan Meltzer, DPM, San Antonio, TX

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B | |
From: Jeff Kittay, DPM
Dr. Feinberg's piece was not nostalgia, as described by Dr. Sherman, but rather a terribly accurate description of podiatric practice as it is disintegrating today. Our expertise is being usurped by NPs and PAs and those all important foot-specialist-orthopods so determined to keep DPMs out of the O.R. There are even DPMs, names not mentioned here, who actively campaign against their colleagues, alleging more expertise or better training, and who attempt to exclude others from insurance participation or even hospital staff privileges.
And the APMA poobahs in Washington declare that a 3-year residency is all that is needed for "parity" with the allopathic docs, as if that were possible without an MD or DO after their names. They continue to con innocent undergrads into going to prohibitively expensive tuition-driven unnecessary podiatry schools, taking their money but making practice impossible without the holy 3-year document while there STILL are insufficient residencies for all the grads. Have you no decency at all?
My head IS out of the sand, and I understand that some of you may think it's buried somewhere else. Unless the degree is changed to MD or DO, with all the changes required in the curricula, podiatry as a separate entity, and certainly solo practitioners like myself, will go the way of the dodo. You are all welcome to come visit my ice cream stand in Costa Rica next year, but bring cash. No insurance accepted.
Jeff Kittay, DPM, Boston, MA
