PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
Crocs Okay to Wear (Sometimes): NY Podiatrist

Podiatrist Robert Conenello, DPM, owner of Orangetown Podiatry in New York, says  that the width of Crocs lets the feet splay or spread out. For those who spend all day on their feet, this can prevent friction injuries (such as blisters) and keep the toes from squeezing together, alleviating pain caused by bunions and neuromas. “I’m not a huge fan [of Crocs] to be quite honest, but I think they’re okay to wear in certain circumstances. As a foot covering, they’re quite effective and can be great for going short distances. But they aren’t meant for all-day use, especially if you’re very active.”

Dr. Robert Conenello

Dr. Conenello recommends wearing a structured shoe with laces when running or exercising. Since Crocs don’t hug the feet, they’re more likely to slip and slide during activity, increasing the risk of a twisted ankle or other injury. “My biggest takeaway is that it’s okay to wear Crocs sometimes, but you should wear other things as well,” Dr. Conenello says. “They’re not necessarily bad for your feet, but in long bouts, they can be. That’s why it’s a good idea to mix up your footwear.”

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW
TN Podiatrist Sentenced for $4M Foot Bath Fraud Scheme

A Tennessee podiatrist was sentenced to four years in prison for a scheme to defraud Medicare and TennCare, a Medicaid program administered by the State of Tennessee, by prescribing and dispensing medically unnecessary foot bath medications and obtaining millions of dollars in reimbursements. According to court documents and evidence presented at trial, Nathan Lucas, DPM, 59, of Memphis, owned and operated a podiatry clinic and two pharmacies. Lucas regularly prescribed antibiotic and antifungal drugs to be mixed into a tub of water for patients to soak their feet.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: Dominic Bianco

The title of “Dr.” signifies a person’s capability for analytical thinking and problem-solving, beyond just the academic qualifications displayed on a wall. No doctor, whether a brain surgeon or a dentist, should look down upon podiatrists or any other medical professionals. Considering there are approximately 18,000 podiatrists compared to 250,000 dentists in North America, podiatrists face significantly less competition.

With a population of 579 million people in North America and only 18,000 podiatrists, it is clear that podiatrists are in high demand. However, many podiatrists do not reach their full potential due to various factors such as financial setbacks, personal challenges, or a lack of passion for their work. It is crucial for podiatrists to find their niche and make their practice work to the best of their ability.

Every podiatrist should feel proud and assured of their success, having achieved a level of brilliance that many, including myself, deeply admire.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (APMA NEWS) - PART 1A
From: Bret Ribotsky, DPM

Is this really a victory? It seems that a real victory would be a make good by the American Medical Association to jointly produce a “product” that demonstrates the incredible value that podiatric medicine provides to society and what integral members of the healthcare team podiatrists are.

It seems that at least yearly, there’s a direct attack from organized medicine made upon the podiatric profession. And leadership in our profession seem to be content with just a retraction. I want more! Tort laws in our country allow for recovery of intentional, misleading damages placed upon a person or party. It seems like organized podiatry always threatens to sue somebody unless they remove the offensive post, video, campaign. But that’s clearly not a deterrent until there are significant ramifications for even beginning these actions.

APMA, please share with all of us what benefit has been obtained as a result of your educating AMA to take down their tortuous action; and, while you’re doing this, maybe comment on creating a cancer registry for all of us.

Bret Ribotsky, DPM, Fort Lauderdale, FL

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (APMA NEWS) - PART 1B
From: Robert Scott Steinberg, DPM

What I want to know is what has my many thousands of dollars paid to the APMA done to put money in my pocket. It's time to shed the milk-toast attitude and get mad.

Robert Scott Steinberg, DPM, Schumburg, IL

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (APMA NEWS) - PART 1C
From: Rodney Tomczak, DPM,  MD, EdD

It’s great to see the AMA has removed the inaccurate and offensive comments about our education and preparation of young podiatrists. But let’s not think for one minute that the AMA and APMA presidents are out shopping for equipment to furnish the new APMA/AMA combined office. The removal of the offensive post is not a victory. It never should have existed. The removal merely brings us back to ground zero.

Let’s not start slapping ourselves on our backs for fear of dislocating a shoulder. The AMA has not changed an underlying opinion, it just withdrew the public expression of that opinion and the posting of that opinion. The AMA has not suddenly seen what we consider to be an error in their perception of what we know to be true of our education.

A real victory would consist of AAMC and LCME allowing DPM students the chance of proving through examination that our education is on par with the MD education and our students are equal to MD students. Of course, there is risk involved for us and for the MD educational community. When our students prove their muster through examination performance and stand tall with allopathic students, the reward will be immense. However, with the opportunity for tremendous reward comes the risk that our students could fall flat on their faces. I do not believe the stumble and fall scenario would occur. Passing, on the other hand, would mean a lot more than removing a silly post on social media. It would be reliable and valid proof of what we know to be true and force the MD/DO community to admit we are equal to their graduates.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRY AND SOCIAL MEDIA)
From: John Throckmorton, DPM

Dr. Udell is right. AMA prejudice against podiatry is not new. In the ‘70s and early ‘80s, only small rural hospitals allowed us on staff in the northern Midwest. This was because they needed the income we brought in. The osteopathic hospitals soon followed when Medicare placed restrictions on days paid for in-patients (pending diagnosis), so out-patient procedures and laboratory uses helped offset the losses of restricted inpatients’ length of stay. Some MD hospitals only allowed DO subspecialists on staff if no MDs were viable with that specialty.

After I obtained staff and surgical privileges at 2 local hospitals, interesting enough, the big MD hospital changed their bylaws to include podiatry. This was 3 months after I fixed the chief medical officer’s (a runner in the ‘80s era) biomechanics problem, which none of the orthopedic surgeons could relate to. They had all recommended surgery. There are still a lot of regional areas in the U.S. where DOs and DPMs are talked down to, even though our training is comparable. However, the type of doctor credentials one has is going away since we're all now “providers”.
