PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS |
Mid-Joint Fusions by IA Podiatrist Enable Athlete to Medal at Senior Games
For nearly 50 years, Brad Bonin suffered from foot pain following his time as a football player in high school and college. It was determined to be a congenital deformity aggravated by repeated cleat use. The result was significant arthritis in multiple joints, requiring surgery. Tyler Mulkey, DPM, a podiatrist in Mason City Clinic’s orthopedics department, performed the procedures on Bonin.

Dr. Tyler Mulkey |
"We did multiple mid-joint fusions in the foot to eliminate the painful arthritis,” Dr. Mulkey explained. With his pain behind him, Bonin can walk, run, and go back to being grandpa. “I did the [Iowa] Senior Games about three weeks ago and ended up placing in the shot put,” Bonin said.

Victory! Optum Rescinds Its Misclassification of Podiatrists
APMA has reported that Optum has reserved its decision to reclassify podiatrists. APMA thanks Optum for recognizing that podiatrists are independently licensed physicians who undergo specialized education and training and reaffirming the vital role podiatrists play in advancing clinical outcomes and caring for their patients.
When news first broke of Optum’s proposed reclassification, APMA, state component societies, and members sprang into action. APMA led this collective advocacy effort and thanked state components, societies, members, and other stakeholders for their strong and relentless advocacy on behalf of the entire profession and patients.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Tips to Keep Patients Engaged Between Visits
It's important to note that engagement efforts don't have to bust the budget. Most tactics rely on tools you already own — your electronic health record's (EHR's) messaging templates, inexpensive survey apps, a smartphone camera, and five minutes of staff time.
6. Leverage remote patient-monitoring data.
Integrate home-monitoring devices (blood-pressure cuffs, glucose meters) into the EHR to receive data in real time. Alerts for out-of-range readings prompt nurse follow-up, improving patient metrics, and qualifying the practice for remote patient monitoring (RPM) reimbursement under CMS guidelines.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
RE: Degree, Not Training: The Parity Gap Facing Podiatrists
From: Jengyu Lai, DPM
I joined the American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) ten years ago, excited to be part of a growing movement focused on evidence-based, whole-person care. When ACLM began working toward official specialty recognition, I was excited—but then surprised to learn that podiatrists would not be recognized as physicians within the specialty but instead classified as allied health providers. This decision was not based on differences in clinical training, residency, or capability, but solely on the degree—DPM rather than MD or DO.
Many ACLM members voiced support for including podiatrists as physicians, but the final determination rested with the American Medical Association. When lifestyle medicine was officially recognized as a specialty in 2019, DPMs were excluded from physician designation. I initially refused to pursue board certification. However, after meaningful discussions with a friend and ACLM board leader, I eventually completed the exam. I am now a diplomate of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine—not the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine—and classified alongside NPs, PAs, nurses, dietitians, and therapists.
This experience highlights an ongoing issue: the lack of parity for podiatrists stems not from training or expertise, but from degree classification. As healthcare continues to evolve and new specialties emerge, such as wound management, this degree-based disparity may persist—potentially sidelining podiatrists despite our central role and qualifications in those fields.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (STUDENT RECRUITMENT) |
RE: Student Enrollment Should be Two-Sided
From: Bret M. Ribotsky, DPM
I am writing to express my concerns regarding the increasing requests for individual practitioners to dedicate significant time to marketing and college visits aimed at increasing recruitment into podiatric medical schools. While I understand the importance of maintaining strong enrollment in our profession’s educational institutions, I find the current approach to be fundamentally one-sided. These requests ask practicing podiatrists to invest considerable time and effort in activities that primarily benefit private educational institutions financially through increased student enrollment.
What troubles me the most is the apparent unwillingness of these schools to reciprocate with meaningful benefits for the general membership of practicing podiatrists. If we are truly expected to function as a collaborative “village” where everyone works together for the betterment of the profession, then this relationship should be mutually beneficial. As a constructive suggestion, I propose that schools demonstrate their commitment to the broader podiatric community by offering valuable resources to practicing physicians. For instance, allowing general podiatrists to access refresher courses—such as biomechanics classes—at no cost would provide tangible...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (RAC AUDITS) |
RE: RAC Audits
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM
Later this summer, the RAC audit contractor will be transitioned from Performant to Cotivity. There likely will be a drop off in new RAC audit notices as Perfomant winds down its workload and the Cotivity takes over. There is no change in the subjects being reviewed, as that can only be ordered by CMS, and not the contractor.

RE: Mate Training (Steven Block, DPM)
From: Andrew I. Levy, DPM, Robert Scott Steinberg, DPM
Commendations to Dr. Sherman for his continuously improving and expanding educational efforts. He adopted the Idea of online education early and started working with it over his entire career. It has made more education available and more readily accessible than anyone else I’ve known personally. Seeing his career span well past mine, it Is encouraging to know that he is continuing to maintain that level of academic excellence. Congratulations to him and his team.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (STATE PODIATRY NEWS) |
From: Legislative Affairs Committee NYSPMA Board of Trustees
We are writing in response to Dr. Chaskin and Dr. Kass' recent editorials concerning the new podiatric law in New York State. As always, we ALL have our right to our opinions and PM News decides what and whom to publish. However, the information needs to be factual and the public has a right to decide what they read. In this situation, it is important to note the critique from Dr. Kass, who unfortunately is not a member of the New York State Podiatric Medical Association, is reflective of his individual perspective and does not contribute to the proactive dialogue necessary for our field.
The recently passed law empowers ALL podiatrists, regardless of their certification, to now diagnose and treat diseases and injuries of the ANKLE and foot, including performing...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1A |
I am extremely saddened by the news of the passing of Dr. Joseph Carbone. Not only was he a dedicated podiatric practitioner but was elected and re-elected to the Monroe County Legislature.
His big heart and smile are equally matched by his wonderful sense of humor. I so enjoyed our get togethers at both the Rochester and Buffalo Seminars over the last 35+ years. RIP my friend .
Kenneth T. Goldstein, DPM
So sad to learn of the recent passing of my friend Joseph Carbone, DPM. Joe was more than a colleague, he was a truly remarkable person, a friend, and a dedicated doctor who brought compassion and integrity to everything he did. His sharp mind, kind spirit, and infectious humor made him someone everyone gravitated toward.
During our years at the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine, Joe, Hartley Miltchin, Stanley Blondek, Severko Hrwynak, and I always sat together in lectures, forming a bond that lasted far beyond graduation. Our breakfast and lunch outings in Chicago were moments of laughter, support, and genuine friendships, some of the best memories I carry from those formative four years. I will miss him. Rest in peace, my friend.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1B |
RE: The Passing of Joseph Carbone, DPM
Uncertain of what I wanted to do with my biology degree (and being rather confused) in what medical degree I should attain after graduation from St. John Fisher College (SJFC), Rochester, NY in 1984, I needed some guidance. After attending a required monthly college colloquium while attending my senior year at SJFC, a local podiatrist spoke to our class regarding choosing this profession as an occupation. I found that it might be an option as a medical career. However, it was Dr. Joseph Carbone (alum of St. John Fisher College,’75/Scholl College ‘79 and not the speaker) that I was referred to by my pre-med counselor (Bachelor of Science). He certainly set me straight on what the profession was all about and how I could make a good living without sacrificing family and a good work-life balance.
Many times, he let me visit his office prior to entering podiatry school, allowing me to observe everything podiatry. I was intrigued not only by the day-to-day operations of the practice, the variety of foot and ankle conditions he treated, but mostly by the...
