PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Tips to Keep Patients Engaged Between Visits
It's important to note that engagement efforts don't have to bust the budget. Most tactics rely on tools you already own — your electronic health record's (EHR's) messaging templates, inexpensive survey apps, a smartphone camera, and five minutes of staff time.
2. Schedule automated check-ins by text.
Set up automated SMS check-ins — e.g., "How are you feeling today?" at 48 hours and seven days post-visit.
Automated texts reduce call volume and improve care continuity, while fulfilling HIPAA safeguards via compliant platforms.

CODING & BILLING Q&As FROM THE DOCTORLINE.COM |
Query: Plantar Plate Repair
I recently repaired a PL tendon with moderate resection of a diseased/torn tendon with re-tubularization. I also placed a collagen implant (It is not considered a graft, but an implant)-Regeneten-Smith and Nephew. Would I bill bone spur removal-28118? Would CPT 28313 be accurate?
Enzo Leone, DPM
Response from thedoctorline.com: You asked about coding: CPT 28210 Repair, tendon, extensor, foot; secondary, with free graft, each tendon (includes obtaining graft). Doesn't the peroneus longus evert and plantarflex the foot? So, I would use instead CPT 28202 - Repair, tendon, flexor, foot; secondary with free graft, each tendon (includes obtaining graft).
When you say, "Bone spur removal-28118" CPT 28118-Ostectomy, calcaneus; this means you removed bone on the part of the calcaneus that was not related to the peroneal repair.
Last you asked, "Is there also a code for debridement of the tendon - extensive debridement?" Tendon debridement is tenolysis. In this case, if we are talking about a different anatomical place than repair, then CPT 28220-Tenolysis, flexor, foot; single tendon would be that option for that additional work. Additional coding and billing questions and responses can be found at thedoctorline.com.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 |
RE: Other Non-MD, Non-DO Doctor Healthcare Providers
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD
I thought it might be interesting to look at the data surrounding other non-physicians, but in a non-judgmental view, of course. Draw your own conclusions but be sure to refrain from rash judging anyone blowing their own horn about how hard they work and the good they do. A lot of the following data had large ranges, so I used the Jethro Bodine average technique. For those who aren’t familiar with Jethro, it went something like; “Cipher, carry, naught, naught, carry, cipher, etc…”
Doctors of Chiropractic
There are 18 accredited chiropractic colleges in the U.S. with 2,800 first year students right now. In 2023, approximately 2,700 students were awarded a Doctor of Chiropractic degree. Tuition per year averages about $30,000 and the average income is $89,000 per year. Average admission GPA is 3.38 and a school can suffer loss of accreditation if they admit anyone with a GPA below 3.0. Most accredited chiropractic schools offer...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICARE SCAMS) |
RE: Beware of Medicare Scams
From: Gian Steinhauser, DPM
I just wanted to remind PM News readers to alert their staffs to possible fraudulent Medicare record requests. We received one a few days ago and that was targeting a doctor who hasn’t formally worked for our clinic for over 5 years. The fraudulent request is almost a bit comical as it says things like: “NO EXTENSIONS - NO EXCUSES”, “YOU ARE ORDERED TO FAX BACK COMPLETE MEDICAL RECORDS FOR ALL MEDICARE PATIENTS UNDER YOUR LICENSE”, “Do not call. Do Not confirm. Do not delay.”
Our staff laughed at it and said, “We’re not quite that dumb” as they brought the request to my attention. However, my concern is that had the request been made a bit more formally, with better wording and targeted a more precise set of dates, it might have worked if we didn’t have a policy to review these requests with the manager or doctor first. Had the scammer been more sophisticated and used AI to formulate their letters, they might fool someone in the future.
CMS providers suggest that If you think you received a fraudulent or questionable request, work with your Medical Review Contractor to confirm if it is real. Submit medical documentation through the?Electronic Submission of Medical Documentation (esMD)?system or CMS medical review contractor through secure Internet portals, when available. We have reported this scam to a CMS Program Integrity Investigator to alert them to it.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (STATE PODIATRY NEWS) |
From: Daniel Chaskin, DPM
Here is some language from the recent NY Scope Bill passed by the Assembly and the Senate: "The practice of podiatry may also include [diagnosing, treating,] operating [and prescribing] for any disease, injury, deformity, or other condition of the ankle and soft tissue of the leg below the tibial tuberosity if the podiatrist has obtained an issuance of a privilege to perform podiatric standard ankle surgery or advanced ankle surgery [Emphasis added] in accordance with section seven thousand nine of this article."
My personal opinion is that the above language discriminates against any podiatrist who is board certified in podiatric medicine. In order to give podiatric medical care to the soft tissue below the tibial tuberosity, yet above the ankle, a NYS podiatrist must be board certified in "surgery". Any law that prevents podiatric medicine to be practiced by requiring board certification by a "surgical board" makes no sense and is discriminatory based upon one's choosing to be board certified in podiatric medicine.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM EDITORIALS) |
From: Rich Hofacker, DPM
After reading Dr. Block's Editorially Speaking ("The House Is On Fire..." June/July 2025 Podiatry Management), it made me stop and think about the future of our profession. Although, it is troubling to me that enrollment is down across the board in all podiatry colleges, my main concern is that with the numbers being down, what effects this may have on the selection pool process and the quality of the future podiatric physician. I thought about the high school and college students who have rotated through my office over the years and I realized that there truly have not been that many. Then I contemplated about all of the high schools and colleges within an hour drive of my office and I discovered that there was a staggering number.
Couldn't the podiatry colleges coordinate some type of career day lecture in conjunction with many of these schools to showcase our profession? I fear many students still do not know what a podiatrist is and does. I recently saw where my college Alma Mater is now offering an accelerated program for those students interested in obtaining their doctorate degree in chiropractic medicine. Certainly, our profession could offer something very similar to this.
Just think what benefits could result, if each one of us donated even as little as a half day a year to participate in some type of high school or college event...perhaps, just making ourselves available to answer questions or give a brief demonstration to interested students regarding podiatry. What an impact this could have on our profession's future. I believe the time to act is yesterday! I am afraid our window of opportunity is closing quickly.
Rich Hofacker, DPM, Akron, OH
