DC Podiatrist Comments on Effects of High Heat and Humidity
Dr. Lee Firestone – a marathoner and running coach with the Montgomery County Road Runners Club — says the humidity messes with the body’s ability to cool itself, making the heat feel much worse than the thermometer might indicate. When the body is warm, it produces sweat, which then evaporates and cools the body down. But when it is muggy outside and the air is full of moisture, that sweat cannot evaporate like it would on a dry day. And men, who sweat more, suffer more than women.
|
|
Dr. Lee Firestone |
Firestone — who is also a sports podiatrist — opts for running early in the morning. But when the air quality starts to deteriorate and a Code Orange day is declared, he says anyone who exercises outside might want to bring it indoors instead.

FL Podiatrists Honored as Best Business for Over 10 Straight Years
They are the best at what they do, whether it's cooking Italian food, selling jewelry, or providing a service. Many of them came to Bianca's Ristorante on Tuesday as the North Fort Myers Neighbor honored the best businesses at its Best of North Fort Myers winners luncheon. More than 80 awards were given to local businesses in nearly any category you can think of, with thousands of ballots sent in from readers and people who patronize the businesses they love.

(L-R) Dr. Bradley Habuda, staff, and Dr. Joseph Campbell |
While there were several newcomers to the list, there were also some who successfully added to their titles, such as Tucker's Vision Center and Drs. Joseph Campbell and Bradley Habuda, having created a dynasty by winning best optometrist and podiatrist for at least 10 straight years.

Flip-Flops are Like House in a Mudslide: IL Podiatrist
Doctors say they're seeing more patients, mostly women, with foot pain caused by a summer season spent in flip-flops. One local doctor says the wrong shoes can cause injuries because they don't provide enough support. "Your foot is your foundation. So if your ligaments and tendons are not firm and not holding you, then the shoe and your sock is your foundation to help your body, your knees, your hips, and everything to work better. So, if we don't have support, you're kind of like the beautiful homes in California on mudslides. You end up with foot pain, knee pain, and back pain; but you don't always attribute that to your feet," said Dr. Mary White, podiatrist.

|
Dr. Mary White |
Dr. White says cheaper sandals will only last a season but will have lasting damage. She says a pair that costs a little more money will last longer and have better support for your feet.

5 Ways Providers Can Improve Marketing in the Mobile Age- Part 5
5. Bring social and local together
Make your presence known on social sites such as Facebook -- and be social, too. For large enterprise hospital chains, Facebook can be a powerful customer service mechanism. Encourage dialogue about your own services by making available reviews of your services. Create conversations about healthcare issues that matter to your patients.

Query: B/L Spontaneous Hallux Blistering
A patient presented with bilateral large blisters on both halluces. She reported no trauma, no new shoes, creams, detergents, or increased activity. Her dermatologist recommended de-roofing them and she didn't like the sound of that, so she came for a second opinion.

I'm more concerned with the cause than the actual blisters. Has anyone seen a similar presentation?

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A | |
From: Robert D. Phillips, DPM
I read with interest the comments by Dr. Joseph Borreggine. Unfortunately, I feel that he is equating podiatric practice with private podiatric practice. As a teacher in the College of Medicine at the University of Central Florida, and also a teacher in the family practice residency of a local hospital, I can say that the golden age of medicine is over.
Medical students are incurring ever increasing debt in going to school and struggling to pay off that debt afterwards. Insurance companies have almost totally interjected themselves in what used to be the doctor-patient relationship – which included both the medical relationship as well as the...

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B | |
From: Cosimo Ricciardi, DPM
I read with great interest the sentiments and analysis of the profession detailed by Dr. Borreggine and others regarding the challenges we face as a profession. Salient, no doubt, describing a side of the story which, quite frankly I am sick of hearing. Comparisons are made in terms of sweeping generalities using “we as a profession” as if we all adhere and are bound by the same analysis of despair.
Yes, podiatry is faced with challenges. We are doctors in a never-ending cycle of change and rebalance; a cycle which has continually morphed into a new challenge and a new way to see the current situation in podiatric medicine as griped in an unsolvable morass. Problems which are...

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL) | |
I too received a request of records for 25 patients from United Healthcare. I spoke to Karen Kessler At PICA who told me they are just gathering information and this is not a true audit. She had called this a "risk adjustment review." Although United Healthcare offers to come to your office to do the copying, it is recommended that you copy the charts yourself and send them to the carrier. In Florida, you are allowed to charge $20 per hour and $.10 a page. You should include the invoice in your mailing to them.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) | |
From: Dan Klein, DPM
I have read several commentaries on EMR costs and requests for medical records for review by secondary insurance companies. I was in solo practice for 20 years and I can say I'm glad to be retired and out of the business. I bought a software program called DR billing program 20 years ago for $10,000. Subsequent ownerships resulted in a company, Cerner, buying the rights to run this program software. I was charged monthly fees for maintenance and costly updates for software requiring new hardware.
I didn't have EMR recordkeeping and paid high fees for transcriptions of records. When Medicare opened the door to contracted sub-companies to pay for Medicare claims, I started getting requests for...
