NYSPMA Nassau County Division Awards 2 Kanegis Memorial Scholarships
The New York State Podiatric Medical Association’s (NYSPMA) Nassau County Division awarded the Alvin J. Kanegis Memorial Scholarship awards to two New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) students. The two recipients are recent NYCPM graduate Lethicia Paul, DPM, and Debbie Moalemi ('25). The awards were presented by Nassau Division president Craig Herman, DPM.

Both recipients have demonstrated excellence in academics and a desire to give back through volunteer work in the community through their places of worship. Each student was awarded five hundred dollars. In attendance was Dr. Kanegis’ wife, Judy.

Pella Regional Health Center has welcomed foot and ankle surgeon Jill Frerichs, DPM to the medical staff. Dr. Frerichs earned her Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from Des Moines University – Osteopathic Medical Center College of Podiatric Medicine & Surgery (CPMS) and completed her Podiatric Surgical Residency at Grant Medical Center, Columbus, Ohio.

She is board certified in Foot, Rearfoot and Ankle surgery and a member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. Previously, Dr. Frerichs worked with Capital Orthopedics in Clive, Iowa with an outreach clinic at Pella Regional Health Center.

VA Podiatrist Reviews Sleep and Training with Health Expert
Ben Pearl, DPM recently discussed optimizing sleep for sports with Dr. Eric Berg in Pearl’s podcast Fit Foot U. Dr. Berg has a viral health podcast with over 10 million subscribers world wide. Berg said that oxidative stress associated with overtraining can deplete vitamin B1 (thiamine). He suggested thiamine supplementation in the evening can help combat insomnia.

Dr. Pearl asked Berg what other things account for fatigue and poor sleep. Berg said that lack of Vitamin D and melatonin is not uncommon with people that do not get enough natural sunlight. Exposure with only face and arms is often not enough. He suggested that infrared lights and even infrared from a campfire can help replenish melatonin and vitamin D levels.

Mississippi Hospital Settles MS Podiatrist’s Pay Equality Lawsuit
A Black doctor and the hospital he sued for paying him less than a White colleague have agreed to the dismissal of his suit. Preston Boles’ podiatry practice was bought by Greenwood Leflore Hospital in 2006, but a dispute arose after the hospital hired a White doctor to pick up Dr. Boles’ workload at significantly more pay.
The hospital lost a summary judgment in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Mississippi after unsuccessfully arguing that Boles’ performance was the cause of the pay disparity. A settlement was reached in February right before trial, according to a court order.

RIST Law Increases Scope of Practice for French Podiatrists
The law on improving access to care, known as the RIST law, has recently expanded the skills of podiatrists in prescribing plantar orthotics, allowing them to do so without prior prescription from a doctor. This measure is one of the novelties introduced by this law, which aims to provide better access to care and to facilitate the care pathway for patients.
By authorizing podiatrists to prescribe orthopedic insoles, the RIST law aims to improve access to care and streamline the care pathway for patients. From now on, patients can therefore go directly to a podiatrist to obtain orthotic devices, without having to go through an MD. This measure should make it possible to free up medical time for doctors, while guaranteeing rapid and efficient care for patients suffering from foot disorders.

Query: Compression Dressings
We are trying to bill CPT 29580, bilaterally, and CPT 29581, bilaterally, through Medicare. We are using a -50 modifier on both. This treatment is being used for ulcers. They are getting denied. We then tried to bill with 2 line items using -RT -XS and -LT -XS modifiers. They are still getting denied. Can you point us in a better direction?

Response: To begin with, what is the denial reason listed on the EOMB? This is the starting point when trying to figure out why your claim is being denied. Both CPT 29580 and CPT 29581 are billed on one line with a -50 modifier appended to the code when doing this bilaterally. Beyond that, we need to know the denial reason so we can address that properly.

Richard was a classmate of mine at ICPM, '81. He was by far the most organized and studious of the 140+ students in our class. He was always willing to lend a hand to those students less organized and less studious than he.
He was an active member of the note group which assisted many students in getting their assignments done on time. I remember visiting him at his College Park office across the street while my daughter attended U Maryland. His practice reflected his organized professional manner that he demonstrated back at ICPM. My condolences to his brother (a fellow ICPM graduate) and the rest of his family. May his memory be a blessing to all of us.
