RE: The Passing of Terence B. Albright, DPM (Lloyd Smith, DPM)

I was a classmate (OCPM-75) of Terry and always saw him as a smart, ethical, and kind person. It was easy to know he would be a leader in podiatric medicine. My condolences to his family and friends. We clearly lost a good one.

Howard Dananberg, DPM

I was in school with Terry and he has always been a good friend. His service to our profession can't be measured. Will miss you my friend. RIP.

Tania, my daughters, and I were so sad to hear of Dr. Albright's passing. When the book on our specialty is written, he will be recorded and recognized as a quiet giant who was, in many ways, responsible for putting together an academic and research unit that is a world leader decades after its development. Rest in peace to a great and good man.

David G. Armstrong, DPM

Terry is a quite simply a podiatry icon. He leaves a legacy of intelligence, dedication, and a strong advocacy for podiatry. While a quiet thoughtful man, he displayed remarkable passion, and when he spoke, you listened. May his memory serve as a source of comfort and solace to his family and friends.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1 C

From: Mark Squire, DPM

I met Gary when we were co-residents at Harrison Community Hospital. I was from NY and Gary a native Michigander; and he made me feel like family. He was soft spoken and a gentle soul. He was also an academic and scholar and we often drove down to Wayne State Medical School to read journals.

We had many adventures together such as the time he built a sailboat. The first time we put it in water, he was reading the manual on how to sail while he was at the tiller! One time, several of the residents decided to go cross country skiing. Gary had the car keys but lost them somewhere on the trail, and did not realize that until it got dark and it was time to go home. We had to return the next morning at dawn to hunt for the keys. We found them in the parking lot!

He was too young to pass and he will be greatly missed.

Dr. Gary Bauer represented the excellent combination of surgical precision, anatomic knowledge, and biomechanical expertise which define the strengths of our profession. There are literally generations of podiatric surgeons who benefited from his dedication to medical education during his time at PCPM/TUSPM. I consider myself fortunate to be included among this number, and to be a small part of carrying on his legacy and traditions within the Surgery Department at TUSPM. Thank you Gary, and I wish you a peaceful journey on.

From: Ben Pearl, DPM, Erwin J. Juda, RPh, DPM

As one of Dr. Bauer’s many students at PCPM, I liked how he carried his intellect in a thoughtful deliberate way rather than a brassy way. What a classy clinician and person he was.

Ben Pearl, DPM, Arlington, VA

I am so profoundly sorry to hear of the passing of Dr. Gary Bauer. I had the pleasure of working as a Lab Instructor at TUSPM for the Cadaver Surgery Course directed by him. Dr. Bauer was the consummate master of anatomy who was always willing to unselfishly share his knowledge, experience, and time for any student. He was also an avid sailor and I will always cherish the fond memories of our families spending time together boating on the Chesapeake Bay. I will keep him, Maggie, and his children in my thoughts and prayers. Please accept my sincere condolences.

Gary and I knew each other well. We both lectured for many years at the No Nonsense Podiatric Seminar in Cleveland, Ohio. Gary was a full-time professor of surgery and lectured on the latest surgical procedures. He was also a student and protégé of Dr. Harold Vogler who also was a professor at Temple, and he would often quote Dr. Vogler's extensive surgical research in his lectures.

Gary had a great sense of humor and was a real people person. He would spend a great deal of time at the seminar, after his lecture, being with the other participants. You got the feeling when you spoke with Gary that he listened to you, and that form of empathy is admirable. We lost a good person and may his memory be a blessing to all who knew him.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1 A

From: Harold W. Vogler, DPM

I am so very disappointed to learn of Gary's death. He was one of my surgical residents dating back to 1978 at Harrison Community Hospital in Michigan. He was recognized as something "special" even then. He had a keen analytical mind and questioned just about everything, but in a positive academic manner. Ultimately, I recruited him to the Dept of Surgery at PCPM mid-1980s. He quickly became a favorite of the students and staff.  He demonstrated an affinity to teach students and residents, with a mild manner and style that was unique. As a result, he was awarded "professor of the year" several times.

His precise surgical style in the OR was measured, calm and controlled, and allowed an exceptional learning experience for students and residents alike. He spent hours in the dissection laboratory detailing and photographing almost all surgical procedures, to facilitate teaching. I think the entire surgical department learned much from Gary. I often quietly entered his classroom while he was in action to watch and learn from him.

Gary's personal and professional demeanor was also something special--understated and engaging for sure, but precise all the time. His life consisted of the study of podiatric surgery, sailing, and the animals of his "farm". We became the closest of friends in and out of the OR. He was one of my most trusted confidants, always providing me sage guidance on a variety of matters. I am happy that I have many incredible stories and memories of Gary. He made me a better surgeon. I will miss him. My condolences to his family. RIP.
