AT THE COLLEGES |
WesternU CPM Holds Commencement
Western University of Health Sciences’ College of Podiatric Medicine held its Commencement ceremony May 13, 2025 in Pomona, California. Graduate speaker Donya Rabadi, DPM ’25, emphasized to her classmates that confidence isn’t about having all the answers, it’s about trusting their perspective and that their instincts do matter. “Each of us brings something unique to this profession - not just our medical knowledge, but our humanity, our empathy, and our lived experiences. These are not things to water down. These are, in fact, our strengths,” Dr. Rabadi said.
|
Dr. Donya Rabadi |
“So from now on, walk into every room knowing that your presence is powerful. Speak with the confidence of someone who has worked relentlessly to get where you are. Let your skills, compassion, and authenticity be what sets you apart. Don’t strain to make others comfortable. Don’t wait for permission to lead. And don’t let imposter syndrome talk you out of opportunities that were made for you. You’ve earned your place, now own it and don’t give up your seat at the table," said Rabadi.

PODIATRIC PODCASTS |
Remembering Gerard Yu’s Residency Teaching Legacy
This month is the traditional time many podiatry graduates will start their residency journey. In Ben Pearl, DPM's Fit Foot U podcast, Mike Downey, DPM reviewed Gerard Yu DPM’s legacy in residency teaching. Dr. Yu was the chief resident and took on the role of teaching his junior residents including Dr. Downey and D. Scot Malay, DPM who both went on to teaching careers. Click here to view short video.
|
Dr. Gerard Yu |
Dr. Downey said that he thinks senior residents should scrub every case they can, and take on the role of teaching even in the 1st year resident cases. Today, many residents simply scrub their cases and pursue their own paths. This August marks the 20th anniversary of Dr. Yu's passing.

Podiatry Students Support Runners at the TCS London Marathon
Each year, a range of healthcare professionals work alongside volunteers to deliver essential medical care at the finish line of the TCS London Marathon. This year, 65 podiatrists from both NHS and private practice, along with podiatry students, volunteered their time and expertise to support the 52,000 runners taking part in the event.

QUERIES (CLINICAL) |
Query: Taking Blood Pressure Prior to Minor Procedures
I’d like to ask a question about an incident that occurred the other day. I was excising a painful hyperkeratotic lesion from the 5th toe lateral proximal nail fold with lidocaine plain. During the excision of this 3 mm lesion, bleeding did not stop for more than 30 minutes. I decided to take her blood pressure which was 206/104. I assumed her BP was causing this bleeding issue since she was not on any anticoagulants, no hematologic pathologies as per her PCP.
I’d like to ask if we should take BPs on patients we are doing any procedure on as minor as this is. P.S. the bleeding finally stopped, but I did send her to the ED which confirmed hypertension as well. The lesion was sent for pathology.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (DEALING WITH PATIENTS) - PART 1A |
From: Richard A Simmons, DPM, Jim Steinberg, DPM
Establish the protocol for your office and follow it. If you allow time for "emergencies" to be seen immediately, fine; if not, then don't do it.
Richard A Simmons, DPM, Rockledge, FL
Try a small adjustment in your a.m. and p.m. schedule. I leave 15 minutes open of what we call "quality time" in both time slots to be able to see these patients. It makes for good patient relations and tends to satisfy all.
Jim Steinberg, DPM, The Villages, FL

RESPONSES/COMMENTS ((DEALING WITH PATIENTS) - PART 1B |
From: Lynn Homisak
Dr. Udell, I have followed your comments over the years (And years and years!) and have always admired your perspective, particularly in the management arena. It is with respect that I offer my opinion to your question concerning patients who demand to be seen with non-emergent conditions and “don’t want to wait for an appointment.” I don’t believe this is necessarily a new trend as I’ve seen this happen in many offices in my capacity as a consultant and even experienced it myself way back when I was an assistant. Truth is, some patients (not all) expect practices to do somersaults to accommodate them when they finally decide to call. It becomes a problem when practices DO accommodate for fear of losing that patient to another practice.
Rather than just give in and allow them to turn the schedule upside down, I suggest a different approach; one that very few offices initiate and more importantly does not put the patient in control. Instead of keeping your office open 24/7, consider initiating a waiting...
