PODIATRISTS WHO SERVED OUR COUNTRY |
MI Podiatrist is One of 6 brothers to Serve in WW II
Frank Engardio spent four months stuck in a fox hole in 1944, near an Italian farm. Meanwhile, his brother, Andrew, now 91, was a soldier in a supply depot in Verdun, France, trying to make sure U.S. troops had everything they needed to win World War II in Europe. Dr. Andrew Engardio is a retired podiatrist who lives in Adrian, MI. Mary Engardio and her husband, Sam, who ran a Williamston store that sold fruit, confections, beer, wine and tobacco, would see all six of their boys enlist in the military during the World War II era.

Frank and Andrew, the only two brothers still living, will return to Williamston to appear in the Red Cedar Jubilee parade June 21. They plan to celebrate as their family’s story is featured in an exhibit that begins in early June at the Williamston Depot Museum.

AAPSM Renames Golden Foot Award in Memory of John Pagliano, DPM
In an acknowledgement of the legacy of the late Dr. John Pagliano, the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine recently voted to change the name of its current “Golden Foot Award” to the “John Pagliano Golden Foot Award”. The name change honors the unique and important contributions of Dr. Pagliano in the field of podiatric sports medicine. Many of AAPSM members have stated that it was Dr. Pagliano’s passion, energy, and leadership that inspired them to pursue a career in podiatry. “As both an accomplished athlete and a pioneer in sports medicine, we feel he is the perfect embodiment of the award,” stated current AAPSM President Paul Langer, DPM.
|
Dr. John Pagliano |
The John Pagliano Golden Foot Award will continue to be presented to individuals who, through effort and example, have significantly contributed to the public awareness of the importance of physical fitness and the role of podiatric sports medicine in the care of the athlete. Past recipients of the award have included; David Beckham, Walter Payton, Warren Moon, and Alberto Salazar, to name a few. The AAPSM and the sports medicine community owe a debt of gratitude to the accomplishments of Dr. Pagliano and hope this award given annually in his name will remain a small part of sustaining his great legacy.

This is a Haitian program for Haitians run by Haitians supported by podiatrists involved in sharing of their knowledge and experience. Once the clinic is fully established, it will be expanded countrywide with the original clinic serving as the referral source for the regional and local clinics.

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR |
Reserve High Heels for Special Occasions: IL Podiatrist
High heels are the No. 1 culprit of foot pain for women, according to an American Podiatric Medical Association survey. Nearly half of all women wear heels, and 71 percent of heel-wearers say those shoes hurt their feet, the APMA reports. “With many types of heels, like very high stilettos, foot pain is hard to avoid,” says Dr. Matthew G. Garoufalis, a podiatrist and immediate past president of the APMA.
|
Dr. Matthew Garoufalis |
“But it is possible for women to find a happy mid-point between great looks and great pain. Treat heels like dessert,” Garoufalis says. “Don't wear them all the time, just on special occasions.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Use a Good Scheduling System
Many practices assign a relatively low-paid employee to schedule appointments manually. Yet the schedule has an enormous impact on productivity and efficiency. Dedicate resources to developing a good scheduling system, hire a top-notch person to run it, and ensure that the entire staff understands it. This is especially important for solo practices that are growing into groups. Good scheduling can increase patient flow by two or more patients per day, which is net income to the practice. If you use a manual system, consider computerizing it. Your billing system may have a scheduling module that is adequate for solo and small-group practices. You can buy a more sophisticated system, but don't upgrade until you have established scheduling guidelines and policies.

CODINGLINE CORNER |
Query: Coding Maggot Therapy for Ulcers
One of the physicians in our office is considering the use of maggot therapy to treat a chronic ankle venous stasis ulcer. Does anyone have experience or any knowledge about the CPT coding for maggot therapy of an ulcer? Any suggestions for the coding for the supplies? The patient is covered by Medicare.
Nancy, Biller, Office of Matthew Lappenga, DPM, Holland, MI
Response: I have used maggot therapy for years..there is no CPT code. The patient pays. I reserve maggot therapy as a last gasp measure prior to amputation for ischemic ulcers that are non-bypassable. Most of the time, patients have no qualms about paying for it.
By the way, I don't believe you'll find it indicated for venous stasis ulcers, though. If you use it for this type of wound, be prepared to prescribe a narcotic for a few days. Keep in mind that it is all about compression for venous ulcers.
