VA PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
The Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame Society Honors AZ Podiatrist

Arthur Evensen, DPM, a podiatric surgical resident at the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVAHCS), was awarded the VA Outstanding Employee award by the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame Society (AVHOFS). This recognition is a testament to Dr. Evensen’s unwavering commitment to supporting and advocating for the Veterans he serves. In a special ceremony at SAVAHCS, Dr. Evensen was presented with a Director's Coin by Jennifer Gutowski, the SAVAHCS Director, recognizing his outstanding achievement.

(L-R) Jennifer Gutowski, Drs. Arthur Evensen and James Dancho

James Dancho, DPM, Director of Podiatric Surgery at SAVAHCS, shared his thoughts on Dr. Evensen's award. "Dr. Evensen is absolutely the best choice by the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame Society. He has been a valuable addition to our residency program and a remarkable example for other residents. As a Veteran myself, I understand Dr. Evensen's compassion and dedication to Veteran care. This award could not have gone to someone more deserving."

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
6 Signs Your Practice Needs to Hire More Staff

Here are six red-flag trends, drawn from recent industry studies and management guidance, that signal it’s time to post a job ad or bring in contracted help.

6. Growth plans rely on the same roster.

An April 2025 operations briefing stressed that practices adding telehealth, ancillary services or extended hours without parallel staffing strategies risk provider burnout and service failures. Outsourcing or hiring early lets you scale without overloading today’s team.

Action: Attach a staffing impact statement to every new service proposal: forecast added patient volume, skills required and the break-even point for each additional full-time or contracted role.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (STUDENT RECRUITMENT) - PART 1A
From: Alan Sherman, DPM, James DiResta, DPM, MPH

Kudos and thanks to Dr. DeHeer and the Foundation for Podiatric Education (FPE) for their efforts to increase recruitment of students for our schools. He is a creative man of action and we need more of those in podiatry. May DiscoverPodiatry.org be a successful campaign.

Alan Sherman, DPM, Boca Raton, FL

I'm not sure how the narrative changed to the respect for the DPM degree and reducing value of a DO vs. an MD degree, but the conversation really needs to circle back to the crisis at hand. There are not enough qualified applicants applying to schools of podiatric medicine and if the cohort of today's matriculants continues, it is more than embarrassing. Dr. DeHeer presented to this forum the PFE initiative for recruitment and I applaud what they are doing BUT if you review the data from the individual podiatry colleges on the link he provided, DiscoverPodiatry.org, you will be aghast.

The MCAT scores of our enrolled students are very low across the board and 2 of the colleges have students at the low end at 476. A 476 score equates to the <1%tile i.e.. >99% of people taking the MCAT test scored better. YIKES, and these are matriculated students! GPAs are...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (STUDENT RECRUITMENT) - PART 1B
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD

So here we go again. The same old song of bait and switch. Gen Z students are going to look at the bottom line, income, when it comes to deciding on a career and hopefully they will research more than the resource offered in The New Student Recruitment Campaign website. I don’t really trust… what employment authority is it you used? Aha, Zip Recruiter. Average salary according to the new recruitment campaign is approximately ~$273,000. Of course, JPA a medical marketing firm which represents Kroger Health, my "go-to" cardiac resource, and is the Foundation for Podiatric Education partner in this "going down for the third time" adventure.

Podiatry Management quotes a median net income of $131,000 for solo and $167,250 for those in partnerships/group practice. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics lists the mean annual income of podiatrists as $162,520. Expenses over 50% of gross? Who would have thought? Hopefully, not the 20 or 21 year old who has yet to see the monthly payment on a $300,000 loan used to pay tuition, stay out of the cold and rain, eat, and take public transportation to school. I trust the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and Podiatry Management more than Zip Recruiter. Pinocchio’s nose grew when he lied and Geppetto, the podiatrist/cobbler in this story.

I assume in the spirit of opaque podiatric transparency AACPM will release tomorrow the number of applicants to podiatry schools as of today and again when The New Student Recruitment Campaign ends. I hear the whispering, “Back door between 11:55 PM and midnight, the window is tight.” Moral relativism at its finest.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC EDUCATION)
From: Gregory T. Amarantos, DPM, Aaron Ben Pearl, DPM

Well said! Anything I could add to your comments would be superfluous. Podiatry is a great profession as long as we don’t let those in the ivory towers ruin it.

Gregory T. Amarantos, DPM (retired), Lake Forest, IL.

I agree with Dr. Jacob’s thoughts about our need to take action for our profession, which in turn, helps us as individuals. I live in Arlington, VA, not far from Arlington Cemetery. The eternal flame marker is where The Kennedy brothers John and Robert are buried. For those too young to know, Robert was the father of RFK Jr., the current HHS Secretary.

There is a plaque at Robert F Kennedy’s grave which reads: “Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.”

There are many stories of things that have happened from one connection leading to something else in our profession. Collectively, it is our responsibility as individuals to manifest our thoughts into action rather than simply pontificating or complaining in forums and meetings about the inequities that exist in our healthcare system.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A
From:  Allen M. Jacobs, DPM

Arden Smith reminds those of us from Philadelphia of his appreciation of Louis Newman and "Buzz" Forman. Both of these were also mentors of mine. When I was working in the OR at Kensington Hospital in Philadelphia, I was fascinated watching Dr. Forman teach podiatry students on clinical rounds. He went on and on questioning and educating the students. He was not a paid faculty member of the college. If I recall correctly, he was one of the first ACFAS members with a very low number on his certificate. He was devoting his time to advancing our profession with no financial award. I was very young working as a patient transporter from the room to OR and back. I remember how shocked I was watching him remove 10 toenails, thinking OMG! I watched him do forefoot surgery, always teaching. That is how you advance a profession.

Louis Newman was a dedicated surgical educator. I worked with him at Oxford Hospital and Rolling Hill Hospital in Philadelphia. He would take the students to lunch, educate us over a meal, direct and build our skills in the OR, then spend time with us after cases...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM

I too, like Arden Smith, am retired from clinical practice, but during my clinical days, my office waiting room, like Arden's, was always full. Most of the MD/DO in my area were not only respectful of my degree, but they worked with me in the hospitals, referred their private patients to me, and many MDs/DOs became my patients.

One internist who was locally famous had to sneak in at the end of the day so as to avoid him having to sit in the waiting room with many of his patients. After a few such visits, I suggested we needed to figure out a way to stop these no charge visits to him in my reception area. My office waiting room could not be used as his POS. But initially I said no, he had to sit in my waiting room so he could see what it was not only like to see how it feels to be a patient, but I wanted him to experience the full breath of what podiatrists treat. And believe me he learned...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1C
From: Allen M. Jacobs, DPM

On what factual basis does Dr. Sherman suggest that the 3-year surgical residency model has negatively impacted on podiatric colleges application pools? He is and has been a non-practicing podiatrist for many years. When did he last make hospital rounds with students/residents or work in an OR with students/residents? Would he be so kind as to share with us the substantive FACTS for his predicate please.

While we all appreciate his philosophy as a non-practicing clinician, legitimate and reliable data, not philosophy, should form the basis upon which to conclude that the current residency model requires serious modification. For many years, the various residency models (medicine, surgery, 1, 2, or 3 years) created uncertainty and the suggestion of lack of uniform training in podiatry among our medical colleagues. In addition, multi-level changes in the evaluation and certification of residencies would be necessary.
