AT THE COLLEGES
NYCPM Joins Touro for Day of ‘Healthy Aging’

The New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) recently participated in “Healthy Aging: An Educational Day for Seniors,” sponsored by Adrienne E. Adams, Speaker of the New York City Council and by Touro University. The full-day program, based in the Rochdale Village Ballroom in Jamaica, Queens, began with remarks by Speaker Adams as well as by Touro Provost Patricia Salkin, JD, Senior VP of Academic Affairs, and Rabbi Moshe Krupka, MS, Executive VP of Touro University and chief liaison for community affairs.

Andrew Kempadoo Umadat, Nneamaka Oliver, Drs. Loretta Logan,  Eunice Ramsey-Parker, Provost Patricia Salkin, Jasmine Christie Reid, John Harris, and Iain Guy

NYCPM’s Professor and Chair, Department of Orthopedics and Pediatrics Loretta Logan, DPM, MPH and FCNY/Clinic Administrator Eunice Ramsey-Parker, DPM, MPH gave a presentation about issues of aging feet and ankles, and headed the NYCPM team of five students -- Andrew Kempadoo Umadat ('24), Nneamaka Oliver ('23), Jasmine Christie Reid (''23), John Harris ('24), and Iain Guy ('24) -- that provided podiatric services including foot screenings and distribution of information to the seniors who filled the ballroom.

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
OH Podiatrist Discusses Runner's Toe

Your toenails can take quite a beating when you’re pounding the pavement or hitting the treadmill, notes Georgeanne Botek, DPM. Every stride may put a bit of stress on your toenails (particularly on your big toe). Over time, that can take a toll. “Runner’s toe” describes the damage caused by pressure, shearing, and friction as your toenail repeatedly and forcefully makes contact with the front or side of your shoe. This repetitive impact can lead to a subungual hematoma.

Dr. Georgeanne Botek

Easing up on activity, especially if you’re experiencing pain, will give your toenail a chance to heal. The blackened toenail will eventually grow out over time. It’s also a good idea to get your feet properly sized at a local shoe store to assure you have enough toe box space in your shoes. This can help limit the friction that causes runner’s toe. Try to avoid painting over black toenails with polish, recommends Dr. Botek. While it may improve the appearance of your toenail, polish also prevents your nail from breathing and isn’t healthy for long periods of time.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Tips for Easing Patient Collections in Your Practice

Starting in 2023, some credit-reporting firms will remove unpaid medical debt of less than $500. Asking patients to pay their medical bill may become more difficult when there are fewer financial consequences. Here are some strategies to ease the burden of patient collections and improve cashflow and revenue:

2. Collect the amount the patient is responsible for as close to the time of service as possible.

“Pre-service or at the point of service is best,” says Crisi Hutson, MBA, senior director of product development at Availity. “The farther away from the care, the easier it is for patients to re-prioritize their finances.” Note that doing this may require new workflows such as verifying benefits and eligibility a few days prior to the service as well as on the date of service, she adds.

CODINGLINE CORNER
Query: Multiple Hammertoe Repair

How do you bill CPT 28285 for three toes? The patient’s insurance is Medicare Novitas Texas. The toes that were operated on were the second and third toes of the left foot and the second toe of the right foot. (-T1, -T2, and -T6)

William Pack, DPM, Conroe, TX

Response: The three toes involved were the second and third toes of the left foot and the second toe of the right foot. The CPT code that is appropriate for the correction of a hammertoe is CPT 28285 which is defined as the following: Correction, hammertoe (e.g. interphalangeal fusion, partial or total phalangectomy). When the MUEs or the Medically Unlikely Edits were accessed, the MUE for CPT 28285 is 4. Therefore, it would be appropriate to bill for all three hammertoe corrections on the same date of service.

The coding scenario would be the following:
CPT 28285 – T1
CPT 28285 – T2
CPT 28285 – T6

Query: Source for Purchasing 10% NaOH

I have been purchasing 10% NaOH from my supplier, but they no longer carry this product. I would be most appreciative if any of my colleagues are aware of a new source where I can purchase this product.
