AT THE COLLEGES |
NYCPM Holds Poster Day
As a way of strengthening DPM students in the area of clinical research, the New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) added a requirement eight years ago that all 3rd year students must complete a clinical research project. This year there were 23 groups presenting their research, judged by D. Scot Malay, DPM and Hye Kim, DPM from Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia, who teach research classes at NYCPM.
|
Nalia Habeeb |
This year's winning research poster was "Plantar Fasciitis Surgical Outcomes: Influence of BMI on Pain Resolution vs. Symptom Persistence" by Nalia Habeeb. The NYSPMA Queens Division donated $1,500 to the top 3 research projects. The research projects are under the supervision of Eileen Chusid, PhD, Dean of Pre Clinical Sciences, Ron Soave, DPM, Dean of Clinical Sciences, and Keneth Astrin, PhD, Associate Professor of Pre-clinical Sciences.

IL Podiatrist Discusses How to Deal with Foreign Objects in Feet
The first rule of foreign objects: If you think you have something in your foot, don’t attempt to remove it at home. Digging around by yourself is never the answer. “People try to do their own ‘bathroom surgery’ and handle it themselves, but then it starts getting red and hot and swollen, and [the object] gets deeper,” Patrick McEneaney, DPM says. “They develop a pocket of pus, and sometimes those need to be drained surgically.”
|
Dr. Patrick McEneaney |
Instead, schedule an appointment with a podiatrist—and don’t be embarrassed. Foot doctors have seen it all. Not all foreign objects need to be removed. Dr. McEneaney recalls taking an x-ray of an older man’s ankle and saying, “Hey, you’ve got a BB in your foot.” The patient was well aware, "That's from where my brother shot me when I was 8,” which was more than 50 years prior.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
6 Signs Your Practice Needs to Hire More Staff
Here are six red-flag trends, drawn from recent industry studies and management guidance, that signal it’s time to post a job ad or bring in contracted help.
5. Key performance indicators stall despite workflow tweaks.
Phone call–abandon rates can hit 28 percent in busy offices, costing thousands in lost appointments. When metrics like abandoned calls, unsent claims, or portal message backlogs stay high after process fixes, the problem is rarely workflow—it’s manpower.
Action: Set KPI targets (e.g., <5 percent abandoned calls, same day claim submission). Falling short for two consecutive months after process changes flags a staffing gap.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (STUDENT RECRUITMENT) |
From: Patrick DeHeer, DPM
On behalf of the Foundation for Podiatric Education (FPE), I’m excited to share a significant milestone in our shared mission to grow the future of our profession.
This Monday, May 19, we officially launched the first phase of our national student recruitment campaign, developed in partnership with JPA Health. This targeted six-week digital campaign (running through June 30) will be live across Google Search and Meta (Facebook/Instagram), all driving prospective students to our brand-new website: DiscoverPodiatry.org.
Campaign Phase One is just the beginning—a second, even more comprehensive omnichannel phase is planned — but the work is already inspiring. The website, ...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (UNLICENCED FOOT SPECIALISTS) - PART 1A |
From: Elliot Udell DPM
This conversation arises frequently. Many of us are shocked and upset when we see non-podiatrists casting for and dispensing custom foot orthotics. Unfortunately, there is very little we can do about it. I go for physical therapy, and have noted that while the PT is treating me, his associate is busy casting a patient for foot orthotics. They use a lab that markets itself to our profession but also services chiropractors, physical therapists, and who knows who else.
In my geographic area, there are stores run by non-podiatrists who market orthotics to the public, advertising on television and radio and charging more than any of us would dare to charge. The bottom line is that since neither we nor the APMA can change the law, we have to live with it and promote ourselves as "orthotic" experts to our patients.
Elliot Udell, DPM, Hicksville, NY

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (UNLICENCED FOOT SPECIALISTS) - PART 1B |
From: Tom Silver, DPM
I have seen the "custom orthotics" from Foot Solutions and they are definitely not custom, but off the shelf inserts. They try to sell a system of 3 pairs that runs about $1,000 or more that look similar to ones I've seen in catalogues that are sold to us for about $30/pair.
Occasionally a patient has said that these have helped them, although I wonder if it's the placebo effect after spending so much. Most patients that come to me after they spend all this money and it didn't help them will get quite embarrassed when asked how much these cost them. Some even have coverage for Rx. orthotics under their insurance.
It's an absolute scam and something that's been discussed in the past in PM News. I'm surprised that this is still going on and they are still able to get away with this. I agree that the APMA should step in to stop this fraudulent advertising and product.
Tom Silver, DPM, Minneapolis, MN

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (UNLICENSED FOOT SPECIALISTS) - PART 1C |
From: Doug Richie, DPM
I understand and share the same frustration voiced by Dr. Trantalis in his post condemning retail stores providing custom foot orthoses provided by unqualified employees. However, we can make lemonade from the lemons. In 2009, I wrote a blog for Podiatry Today titled "Why podiatrists should not fear custom foot orthotics at Costco". That blog still has the most reads of any blog in the history of that publication. After that, I wrote another blog titled "How Podiatric Associations are Combating The Dispensing of Custom Foot Orthoses in the Retail Setting."
The bottom line is that our professional associations have in the past strongly advocated for and promoted awareness that a podiatric physician has superior and un-matched qualifications to provide foot orthotic therapy to a broad range of patient populations. I am not sure that these associations have continued that effort since 2009.
Doug Richie, DPM, Long Beach, CA

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS) |
From: Janet McCormick, MS
Saylee Tulpule, DPM is correct. Getting pedicures can “increase potential risks of bacterial, fungal, and viral infections.” However, further qualification of that statement should be made. Blanketing judgment of all nail salons and technicians through a statement such as this one is not only unfair, but also inaccurate. Safety-trained nail technicians do not cause transfer of infections of any kind.
True, the licensing education of nail technicians is inadequate and constantly being reduced by uninformed state legislators, but nail technicians who target a higher level safety in the practice of their craft are out there for patients to experience safe aesthetic services, such as pedicures. These technicians are safety certified as medical nail technicians through advanced education and can be sought out by...
