FL Podiatrist Provides Insights on Athlete Care
Gideon J. Lewis, DPM, Director of the Foot and Ankle Sports Medicine Institute, appeared on Bloom TV, joining host Amber Freeman to discuss strategies for treating patients ranging from weekend warriors to elite athletes. During the segment, Dr. Lewis emphasized that athlete care is not one-size-fits-all. Each patient—whether recreational or professional—requires an individualized approach based on biomechanics, activity demands, and performance goals.

He highlighted the importance of injury prevention, early recognition of overuse conditions, and proper footwear selection as key components in maintaining long-term foot and ankle health. “The same principles we use to keep professional athletes performing at the highest level—proper mechanics, recovery, and support—apply to everyone,” said Dr. Lewis. “When you take care of the foundation, you can stay active, perform better, and significantly reduce your risk of injury.”

Toe Socks Can Improve Overall Foot Comfort: GA Podiatrist
Toe socks may look a little unusual at first glance, but this once-niche style has been gaining traction among runners, gym-goers, and hikers. Unlike traditional socks, they separate each toe into its own compartment, and experts say that small design shift can improve overall foot comfort. Part of the appeal comes down to toe alignment. When you’re on your feet, having space between the toes can help the foot sit in a more natural position instead of being compressed inside a shoe. “That can help improve balance and reduce pressure between the toes, which becomes more noticeable during long periods of standing or walking,” says Peter Talisse, DPM, a podiatric foot and ankle surgery specialist at Ankle & Foot Centers of America.
|
|
Dr. Peter Talisse |
That said, toe socks can take a bit of getting used to and aren’t for everyone. Experts emphasize that the foundation of foot comfort still comes down to proper footwear and fit. “Toe socks can be a useful addition for some individuals, but they work best when combined with supportive, well-fitting shoes,” says Dr. Talisse.

| RELEVANT RESEARCH | |
Nearly 10% of Surgeons are Leaving the Profession Within 8 Years
Nearly one in 10 surgeons leave active clinical practice within eight years. Highest losses were in oral and maxillofacial surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, and plastic and reconstructive surgery; mid-career surgeons are most at risk. The lowest annual attrition rates were observed in orthopedic surgery (0.7%), otolaryngology (0.5%), podiatry/foot and ankle surgery (0.4%), and vascular surgery (0.8%).
In this retrospective study, researchers linked the Medicare Physician & Other Practitioners Public Use Files to the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) using National Provider Identifiers. Researchers found demographic changes, too. The percentage of female surgeons rose from 21.2% in 2013 to 28.6% in 2023. The percentage of surgeons practicing in rural and non-metropolitan areas decreased from 10.5% to 8.5% during the same period.

IL Doctor Agrees to Pay $62,500 for Signing Fake Orders in Braces Fraud Scheme
An Illinois-based doctor has agreed to pay $62,500 to resolve allegations that she signed fake orders submitted to Medicare for medically unnecessary orthotic braces, the U.S. Attorney said. Federal prosecutors previously filed a complaint against Dr. Alexandria Williams. The complaint alleges that Williams signed orders for durable medical equipment that were pre-populated based on telemarketing calls made to Medicare beneficiaries and contained multiple false statements, U.S. Attorney Leah Foley said in a statement.

6 Ways to Cut Denials at Your Practice
Most claim denials are preventable. Master these six strategies to stop revenue leaks, speed up payments and keep your staff focused on patient care.
2. Master prior authorization requirements
Prior authorization denials have surged as payers impose more requirements and change rules with little notice. The challenge intensifies with Medicare Advantage plans, which typically take 30 to 45 days for payment, compared with 10 to 14 days for traditional Medicare, according to revenue cycle experts interviewed by MGMA.
Establishing regular check-ins with top payer representatives can reveal changing requirements before they trigger denials. These conversations often uncover issues like outdated credentialing status or new documentation standards that staff need to address

6 Retirement Must-Knows for 2026
Higher retirement plan contribution limits, changes to Social Security benefits, a new senior deduction, and more.
2. The super catch-up contribution limit has increased to $35,750 for 2026.
This allows people who are between the ages of 60 and 63 to make an even higher contribution to their company retirement plans. So their contribution limit is $35,750 for 2026. And then there’s also a new rule that’s going into effect. It was part of the Secure 2.0 legislation. That requires high-income workers who are making these catch-up contributions to their retirement plans to put those catch-up contributions into Roth accounts.
Many employers have added Roth accounts as an option over the past several years, but check with your employer just to make sure that you can make those catch-up contributions and that they can go into a Roth account.

RE: Salary Raises for Physicians
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM
Here in the Northeast, the largest commuter railroad strike ended after 3.5 days. Union workers prior to the strike were paid a median wage of over $140K. With overtime, one train engineer is hauling in a salary of more than $350,000. These figures do not include other benefits, including shift differential, health and disability insurance, and vacation pay. With their new contract they are expected to gain an average of increase of approximately 4% compared to a few years ago from when their previous contract expired. The raises will continue for the next several more years.
Similarly, many LIRR non-union executives have salaries well over $300K. The same is true for our utility executives with hundreds exceeding $500,000 and some deferring payments of well over $185,000 until they retire. Note that many of the union laborers have no college degree and...

From: Gary S Smith, DPM, Keith Gurnick, DPM
When I first opened practice in a small town in 1991, I discovered that a podiatrist had been here for 25 years before they found out he didn't have a license and he left. Apparently, everybody loved him and thought he was great. His secretary took over his business and went door to door practicing podiatry. She would even call me "her colleague". She "practiced" for several years and there wasn't anything I could do because her husband was the local judge.
I really don't see this as much different than what goes on in rural areas today. There is a local "cardiology center" where you can make an appointment to see the "cardiologist "and he is just a PA. There is no doctor, period. No doctor ever comes to or is affiliated with that clinic. There is a dermatologist clinic that is the same way. Only a PA on staff. There is no doctor and no doctor ever comes to that dermatology clinic though they tell you when you make an appointment you will see a dermatologist.
Gary S Smith, DPM, Bradford, PA
It sounds like she should apply for a job at the Good Feet Store.
