PODIATRIC PODCASTS
VA Podiatrist Interviewed on Functional Medicine Podcast

Ben Pearl, DPM was interviewed on Howard Robins DPM's radio show Functional Medicine. Dr. Pearl spoke about applications of pulsed electromagnetic frequency (PEMF) for patients with injuries and chronic disease and pain. He reviewed the early history of PEMF, which was used in its infancy stages with charged needles in the mid-1800s. FDA approval for delayed bone healing was established in 1979. More modern office-based units use spark gap technology with much larger magnetic inductions and frequencies.

(L-R) Drs. Ben Pearl and Howard Robins

Pearl emphasized that it is important that clinicians know the safe biologic frequency zones before operating these more powerful devices. He also agreed that when treating chronic disease, such as diabetic neuropathy, the patient must manage their blood sugars or the treatments will be futile. Pearl predicts more extensive use of this technology by physicians in the next decade.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
RE: 45-Year Anniversary for the Bay to Breakers "Running Centipede"
From: Kevin Kirby, DPM

Coming up this weekend on Sunday, May 21, is the famous Bay to Breakers Race in San Francisco, which began over a century ago in 1912. With over 100,000 runners being expected for this running race-event, the Bay to Breakers is considered one of the world’s largest races. One of the famous parts of the Bay to Breakers race is the “Centipede”, which involves stringing 13 runners together, with antennae on their heads, to run this fun race as an elongated, segmented creature with 26 feet.

Bay to Breakers "Running Centipede"

For those interested in the origins of the Bay to Breakers Centipede, created...

When we were students, we could not have imagined the ability to have real-time conversations about a wide variety of both medical and business-related topics with our peers and other experts in our profession on a daily basis. Thank you for pioneering this most valuable resource. I personally appreciate your dedication and hard work.

Greg Caringi, DPM

From: Multiple Respondents

Congrats to Dr. Block! 7,500 issues and 29 years is truly remarkable. I’m not sure if Barry himself is in the “Podiatric Hall of Fame” but if he isn’t already, it’s about time. PM News has succeeded in becoming an integral part of podiatry on a daily basis and at the end of the day, that’s pretty cool. Wishing Dr. Block continued success.

Jeffrey Kass, DPM

Congratulations on the wonderful PM News milestone. Thank you for making this newsletter happen!

Judy Sperling, DPM

Congratulations on the “Millennium Jubilee” issue milestone! PM News has helped the podiatry community stay connected.

Ben Pearl, DPM

Barry: Congratulations for all your personal time, family times and their support, and the podiatry profession for being a very important part of this great profession. Your health needs to be strong for more accomplishments. Best personal regards for this wonderful publication.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 3
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD

I have known Jeff Carnett since 1986 when I became an Assistant Professor of Podiatric Medicine at then UOMHS/CPM. Jeff was selected to be one of the first podiatric residents at UOMHS/CPM when I was the residency director. He was an excellent resident, trained mostly by Vince Hetherington, DPM and me. Jeff married a Chinese national and was led to believe that if he and his wife became residents of China, he would be able to practice podiatry. This promise never came to fruition and Jeff tried to work in various countries in the East doing some wound care here or there but never practicing to the fullness of his training. Of course, he had an Iowa license but he let it lapse with each additional promise from a government.

So now Jeff would like to return to the U.S. He is meeting resistance at the state level because his one year residency does not qualify him for licensure and employment. Thus, he cannot become board certified although he certainly deserves the opportunity and would no doubt pass any exam. The real irony is that the American Board of Podiatric Medicine which wants to offer a certificate of additional qualification to those podiatrists who did not do a surgical residency will not offer a chance to become board certified to an exceptional podiatrist caught in a time warp. A board (ABPM) that wants to ensure everyone the ability to become boarded, isn't.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (APMA STATE COMPONENT NEWS)
From: Eric B. Fillinger, DPM

As the chairman of the Government Affairs Committee that has been intimately involved in the decades’ long battle for this legislation, I would like to credit some key people who contributed to this successful outcome. This group is absolutely vital for the day-to-day success of our entire profession. This group is each individual member of APMA. I think sometimes the value of each individual (who likely doesn't hold any title or position) goes unsung. ALPMA could NOT have achieved this victory without the help of APMA national - not just the people in the Advocacy Center and not just the president who brought attention to this matter and fought with us and for us, but each and every member.

Each member made it possible for the advocacy office to exist. Each member made it possible for our legislative representation. Each member can take credit for this victory. When a college football team wins a national championship, it is not just the starters who get a ring. It is every person who contributed. ESPECIALLY, this time of year as we renew our membership, there is no better time to remind the profession of just how valuable and necessary our Association is. Together, we accomplish so much more. If you know of a colleague who is not part of the Association, ask them to join with us. We may not always agree on everything. But one thing we can agree on is that individually we will not accomplish nearly as much as we do together. Thank you for reporting this significant event in our profession's history.

Eric B. Fillinger, DPM, Chairman, Government Affairs Committee, ALPMA

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP

RE: Outrageous Shoes of the Day

These shoes were inspired by Sengoku warlords who criss-crossed the battlefield dressed in a robust armor. But their footwear was not considered very respectable.

What a modern day Samurai would wear (photo: Hiko Mizuno)

So, if you could make shoes for the Samurai now using modern technology, they would look like these.
