Cotton Socks are Counterintuitive Choice for Sweaty Feet: IL Podiatrist

Sweaty feet happen, but it’s important to have the proper footwear to help keep your lower body wetness from turning into an issue. After all, sweaty feet can lead to a host of problems, including blisters and foot odor. It’s understandable to want to do without that hassle. The best socks for sweaty feet can help wick away moisture while keeping you cushioned and dry, so you don’t need to feel like you’re squishing around in your shoes all day.

Dr. Melissa Lockwood

It seems weird, but experts swear all-cotton socks aren’t the best idea if you’re dealing with an excess moisture situation. “Cotton socks are actually counterintuitive because they soak up sweat but they don’t wick the moisture,” explains Melissa Lockwood, DPM, a podiatrist at Heartland Foot and Ankle Associates in Bloomington, IL.

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
Blisters are Biggest Issue for Long Distance Runners: CT Podiatrist

According to Michael Scanlon, DPM, podiatrist and assistant professor of Orthopedic Surgery at UConn Health, the biggest issue for those running the UConn Half Marathon or other races is pressure blisters. These will happen during the race and most commonly are associated with poor-fitting shoes or the wrong kind of socks. While properly fitting shoes and socks don’t mean you will never get a blister, it will lessen the chances.

Dr. Michael Scanlon

If you do get a blister, Dr. Scanlon recommends draining the blisters and wrapping to provide a little compression. You will need to drain every six to eight hours. Use a clean sharp needle with rubbing alcohol. Use the needle to prick the blister in several spots near the edge. Let the fluid drain but leave the overlying skin in place. Scanlon advises against deroofing the blister which removes the skin from the blister. A deroofed blister is more painful, more open to infection, and takes longer to heal. If this happens to your blister while running, you will want to use an antiseptic and keep the blister covered with a bandage.

BEYOND PODIATRY
TX Podiatrist Now a Cannabis Entrepreneur

Kamran Hussain DPM’s day job is as a podiatrist in Rockwall, where he has had a private practice for nearly a decade, but the Grapevine native is increasingly involved in the medical cannabis business. He is part owner of a dispensary outside Tulsa, Oklahoma, and is also applying for a dispensing license in Texas, where the law is expanding access but is still limited compared to Oklahoma.

Dr. Kamran Hussain

As a podiatrist, Hussain had never interacted with medical cannabis for his job, but when a childhood friend began working at a dispensary in Oklahoma, he visited to check out the business model in 2019. “There were literally dispensaries everywhere,” he says. “There were different types of dispensaries–some looked kind of shady, and others looked really nice.”

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Aussie Podiatrist's Exam Leads to Life-Saving Heart Surgery

It was a trip to the podiatrist that saved Peter Bedford's life. Mr Bedford, 74, from the New South Wales Central Coast, had a fungal nail and decided to have it treated at the University of Newcastle's Podiatry Teaching Clinic at Wyong Hospital, where he saw trainee podiatrist Victoria Bennett.

Victoria Bennett

She ran a few tests that revealed a life-threatening situation. "I wasn't able to feel Peter's pulses in his feet with my hands at all and when we were using the Doppler … every now and again we could find a little blip," Bennett said. A cardio angiogram then revealed severe coronary artery disease. A life-saving bypass surgery was performed. "I'm certainly a fan of podiatry these days," said Mr. Bedford.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Top Six Ways to Increase Patient Visits

Patient visits have a direct impact on the success of your independent practice. Here are six tips from the experts to put into action.

6.  Every practice should have a recall, or recare program.

Whether you do this manually or use a practice marketing platform to do it, it is one of the more important tools in increasing visits from existing patients. Many preventive care visits are now covered by insurance with no co-pay or deductible, but patients forget to schedule annual exams, well-child visits, and annual vaccines. One quick reminder by phone, e-mail, or text goes a long way to getting patients in for those annual visits.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
From: Elliot Udell, DPM

The stand-alone eprescribing software companies are getting the idea. They can raise their prices annually and if you practice in a state such as New York, where doctors legally must e-prescribe, these companies have you over a barrel. There are problems with e-prescribing. One is that the consumer does not have the ability to take a paper prescription and price it at different pharmacies.

I use Veradigm, which raised the monthly price from 18 dollars to the high forties. The program is fine and I have little choice in the matter. I practice in New York. It would only be fair for states that require doctors to use expensive software to subsidize the monthly costs. Perhaps medical societies can push for this.

Elliot Udell, DPM, Hicksville, NY

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2A
From: Lloyd Smith, DPM

The comments from Dr. Carnett are disturbing. Can someone with credible knowledge of this situation provide comments?

Years ago, as APMA President, I moderated a meeting of an international group of podiatrists. Concerns were presented that all podiatrists are influenced by what is happening in other countries. In particular U.S. podiatry was of greatest concern.

It would be incredibly disturbing if recognized organizations are adversely affecting fellow podiatrists in countries outside the USA.

Lloyd Smith, DPM, Newton, MA

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2B
From: Matthew G. Garoufalis, DPM

In response to Dr. Carnett and his concerns about not being unable to take the American Board of Podiatric Medicine International exam, I would like to explain that this exam is only directed to non-US trained podiatrists that meet a certain criteria in their level of education. We all are aware that medical providers around the world are all trained differently, but are still able to provide patient care effectively. This rigorous exam is aimed at those podiatrists who seek board certification beyond the mandatory regulatory standards in their area of practice. It is not designed for, or intended for, U.S. trained DPMs who are asked to follow CPME guidelines for board certification.

This exam is designed to raise the bar for podiatry, outside the US, for those podiatrists who have trained in countries that meet a designated educational requirement. Currently, that is at least a 3-year baccalaureate degree in podiatry. This should not in any way be compared to the U.S. education model because the U.S. model is different from that of the rest of the world. As a result, we now have a different and rigorous exam for those trained to the high standards needed to sit for this exam. Please take a look at the ABPMi website for more information.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC PODCASTS)
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM

Dr. Davis brings up some very interesting points, all of which have been discussed ad nauseum for more than a decade. There have been innumerable meetings with every healthcare professional organization involved in providing all orthotic devices affected by this policy. I have attended countless meetings and discussion groups with these organizations and CMS. Long before that, a significant number of examples of how this broken policy is counterintuitive to patient outcomes was presented to the DME MAC and eventually to CMS were discussed.

The problem with the absurd five-year same or similar rule does not square solely with the DME MAC, but with language contained in the Social Security Act and the absolute unwillingness of CMS to change that...

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP
Man Charged with Stealing The Wizard of Oz Ruby Slippers

A man was indicted on a charge of theft of major artwork nearly two decades after an original pair of ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in the film The Wizard of Oz were stolen. The shoes were swiped from the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapid, Minnesota.

The ruby slippers Martin allegedly took are one of four remaining pairs in existence, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of North Dakota said. The latest fair market appraisal values the sparkling artifacts of film history at $3.5 million.
