PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Barefoot Walking Beneficial, But Not for All Foot Types: NY Podiatrist

As Ilya Makarovskiy, DPM, a podiatrist with Northwell Health, points out, enjoying a barefoot stroll is reason enough to do it. “A lot of people like to walk around barefoot because they like how it feels. I do it as well,” he says. If your feet have been stuck in uncomfortable shoes all day, it’s relaxing to sink your feet into the ground and feel the grass between your toes (or even just the carpet in your living room).

Dr. Ilya Makarovskiy

For some people, walking barefoot can do more harm than good. Dr. Makarovskiy says that if you have high-arched feet, you shouldn’t do it. He explains that people with high-arched feet typically put a lot of pressure on the ball and heel of their feet, causing calluses to develop under these pressure points. He says that walking barefoot puts even more stress on these parts of the feet, which is why it’s better to have the padding of shoes or at least socks. Dr. Makarovskiy says that people with flat feet shouldn’t walk barefoot either. “People with flat feet have a collapsed arch, so their muscles have to work extra hard. Without the support from shoes, this can lead to achy feet,” he explains.

PODIATRIC PODCASTS
VA Podiatrist Interviews a “Sneaker Head”

Ben Pearl, DPM reviewed the culture of sneaker aficionados aka “sneaker heads”. The sneaker obsession can be traced back to the early ‘70s with track athletes but became more mainstream in the ‘80s with hip hop culture and the popularity of Nike Air Jordan basketball shoes.

The blend of form, function, and fashion is what gives “sneaker heads” their ideal shoes. most collectors have a combination of shoes that they wear as their favorites for comfort and shoes that are strictly for collecting. The podcast finished by reviewing some of the details of new technologies and running shoes that make them comfortable and enhance the performance of the shoe.

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
Crocs Not Meant to be Worn All the Time: TX Podiatrist

Anne Sharkey, DPM, a podiatrist and expert in foot and ankle health with over a decade of clinical and surgical experience, says that something she wishes everyone knew about Crocs is that they aren’t meant to be worn all the time.

Dr. Anne Sharkey

“Crocs are known for being lightweight, easy to take on and off, for their cushioning and their water-resistance, but they lack significant structure, stability, and arch support. Lacking these important features, they are a poor choice for anyone needing to be on their feet for extended periods,” she explains.

Aussie Podiatrist Fined for Practicing with a Lapsed License

A Gold Coast man who worked as a podiatrist without registration for over a year after his registration lapsed, has been fined $3,000. The man was the owner of a private podiatry business and treated patients while unregistered for over a year between January 2022 and February 2023. He pleaded guilty to a single charge of holding himself out as being a registered podiatrist while unregistered.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
7 Ways to Turn Every Visit into a Warm Welcome

These strategies  draw on real-world lessons and can be phased in without derailing workflow or budgets.

7. Collect—and act on—real-time feedback

A data set of more than 2 million survey responses shows that practices closing feedback loops within 72 hours see the steepest gains in loyalty. Use QR-code surveys in exam rooms, segment complaints by visit type, and assign a staff “response captain” to call or email patients who leave low scores. Your publishing “You said, we did” posters in the lobby demonstrates continuous improvement.

Pro tip: Tag survey comments by theme (wait time, front desk, billing) so you can tackle the biggest pain points first.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 A
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD

On October 19, 2021, The USMLE replied to the podiatry task force made up of our alphabet organizations. USMLE dealt us an unequivocal denial of our petition to take the USMLE in search of a plenary (not limited to body part) medical license. Some years ago, Len Levy, DPM persuaded Larry Jacobson, DO, the dean of Des Moines University, to allow a select group of DPM students to take COMLEX level 1 after the second year of school, around the time of the DPM boards, so our students were "studied up." Only 10% passed the COMLEX. We never told the students the results.

We do not teach the same curriculum of medical school. Because there is a 4-4-3 model does not mean everything is the same. We are not one childbirth and a bipolar patient away from and equal curriculum. The third and fourth years are miles apart as far as clinical experience goes, and there is no comparison. We do not have a month of dedicated pediatrics, ED, neurology, women's health and pregnancy, or psychiatry. Letting our students take these tests without the proper preparation would deliver a devasting blow to their self-esteem. Let's do things the right way rather than trying to sneak in the back door.

Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD, Columbus, OH

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 B
From: George Jacobson, DPM

It is really simple. The applicant pool is showing the lack if interest in spending 7 years to become orthopedic surgeons of the foot.  It takes 7 years to get licensed even if you don’t want to primarily practice surgery. How many medical students want to be orthopedic surgeons? We chose podiatry so we could do it all, not just surgery. How many of us would not have chosen podiatry if it took 7 years to get licensed? That is 11 years post high school graduation.

A lot could be done in 11 years, without the expense. One could be 11 years closer to a pension, have savings, and a family. We may have ruined a simple path to success that we knew as podiatry.

George Jacobson, DPM, Hollywood, FL

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY) PART 1A
From: Elliot Udell, DPM

If we want to show new podiatrists a role model, it would be Arthur Gudeon. When it comes to serving our profession, we can be divided into three categories. The majority are those who attend meetings and go to their practices but do not volunteer their time to any aspect of the profession. The second category are those who serve either academically or politically for a while and then give it up. The third are those who make service to our profession a lifelong obligation.

Dr. Gudeon falls into this latter category. He has never given up the art of giving back. May he be blessed with many more years of social service in making our profession better for all of us.

Elliot Udell, DPM, Hicksville, NY

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY) - PART 1 B
From: Hal Ornstein, DPM

Dr. Gudeon has always been a shining star to mentor young practitioners in many ways. He has always been available to serve as a role model for practice and life management. His positive energy is contagious for the many decades he has served our profession..
