Alan Ng, DPM of Orthopedic Centers of Colorado is the recipient of the first Dr. Sam Mendicino Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Mendicino was an innovator and educator committed to the podiatric profession whose contributions to podiatry include being a residency director and Founder of the Greater Texas Educational Foundation, lecturer, and Past President of the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery (ABFAS).

He is also the President-Elect for the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, as well as Director for the Rocky Mountain Reconstructive Foot & Ankle Reconstructive Fellowship and serves on the residency committee for Highlands/Presbyterian St. Luke’s Podiatric Surgical Residency Program.

Brian went on to open a successful podiatry practice in Vernon, CT, where he practiced for over 40 years. He was awarded Connecticut's Podiatrist of the Year award in 2003, a testament to his talent as a doctor and surgeon.

Condolences to the Hommel family. Dr. Hommel was an incredible podiatrist and is the reason I went into podiatric medicine. He let me shadow him in the summers of 1986 and 1987. He had a tremendous reputation as the “Runner’s Doctor” – he made orthotics and treated many marathon runners over the years in the Madison area. In fact, many out-of-state runners flew into Madison to be treated by him.
In the early '80s, he surgically corrected my mother’s bunions and hammertoes with excellent outcomes. He was kind and personable and his patients loved him. He always made time for me, was never in a rush, and explained pathologies and treatment plans. A wonderful human being! RIP Dr. Hommel.

RE: Two Huge Healthcare Stories

In yesterday’s Becker's Health Care Newsletter, it is reported that a large multi-state hospital system is suing Multiplan for illegal price fixing and automatic significant price reductions, in particular, for out-of-network providers. The story states that Multiplan, by bombarding healthcare providers with automatic reductions in pricing, has made it impossible for providers to deliver healthcare.
The second story impacting healthcare providers has to do with Change Health Care, one of the largest healthcare providers in the country. NYC Health and Hospitals is moving away from Change Health Care. Other stories earlier this week had the CEO of Optum (which owns Change) on the hot seat at a Congressional Hearing. One of the charges made against Change, was that they ignored previous warnings and failed to implement simple systems such as MFA.

While I am in full agreement with Dr. Roth about the joys of direct-pay, I completely disagree with his assessment that only 5-10% of podiatrists are cut out to be direct-pay practitioners. My experience was that I had only one year where my income dropped and that is because I dropped out of everything all at once. It rebounded in year 2, but that is NOT the way to create a successful direct-pay practice. I do agree you need to provide services that are unique so that you eliminate the competition from insurance-dependent practices. But any podiatrist who desires to can create a successful direct-pay practice by first getting expertise in a niche. Then, drop your lowest payors and start seeing your niche patients for direct-pay.
As you build your brand and are consistent with marketing, they will come. And you will be surprised at the number of phone calls you will get asking what you do...
