INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS |
Aussie Podiatrist Tries Out for Professional Football League
Kelsey Cammarano is one of about 35 female athletes at Victoria Park fighting for a spot on Adelaide’s inaugural list for Australia’s second season of the Legends Football League. The sometimes controversial U.S.-launched spectacle was formerly known as the Lingerie Football League and, to be fair, despite the name-change, the package is very much the same.

Podiatrist and sports nut Cammarano was drawn to yesterday’s open tryout as an Australian football fan searching for something tougher than her current netball competition. “I get white-line fever,” she laughs. “I did pre-season (at a football club) for two years and [hurt] my hamstring so I didn’t make any of the games. But I played back in Port Augusta when I was little, and I’ve always played with my brother and my Dad. I still like basketball and netball, but definitely football more.”

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW - PART 1 |
UK Podiatrist Cleared of Sexually Assaulting a Patient
A podiatrist falsely accused of sexually assaulting a patient says his court ordeal has left him “violated and broken”. Sixty of Yousef Kalami’s patients had written to Cardiff Crown Court, where the podiatrist was put on trial, to praise his treatment of them. The patients spoke of his care, kindness, and dignified approach and their shock at him being accused of dealing with a pensioner inappropriately – leading to two charges of sexual assault. Weeping tears of relief, moments after a jury had taken less than an hour to unanimously acquit him, the 59-year-old thanked his patients for their support since his arrest in October last year – a moment he said “devastated” him. “Without my patients and my family, I would not have survived this ordeal,” he said.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW - PART 2 |
Mexican Soccer Coach Fired for Undressing in Front of Podiatrist
There continues to be more fallout from the firing of Chivas Guadalajara boss Ricardo La Volpe. Initial reports simply stated inappropriate behavior as the cause for the sacking of the well-traveled manager. The severity of that inappropriate behavior according to the sources of El Universal is physical and a sexual assault of Alma Coronado, a female podiatrist for the club. Anonymous players told sources that the normal attire when visiting medical staff is shorts and a shirt. La Volpe opted for a tight-fitted towel, which he then took off, revealing himself to Coronado.

CODINGLINE CORNER |
Query: Low Level Laser Therapy Coding
I read that low level laser therapy has been given clearance for treatment of plantar fasciitis. Is this procedure covered by Medicare? If so, what would be the correct CPT code? Is it a covered procedure for other painful conditions?
John Scholl, DPM, The Villages, FL
Response: Low level laser therapy (LLLT) is not covered by insurance. One laser received an FDA approval for fasciitis, however, FDA approval and insurance reimbursement are two very different things. We charge cash for laser treatment and have been doing so for about 6 years. We do packages of 5 or 10.
Some people may suggest CPT 97026 (application of a modality to one or more areas; infrared) or CPT 97039 (unlisted modality [specify type and time if constant attendance]). Please understand that if you use a physical therapy code, you would have to produce all of the exam paperwork like the physical therapists do. That would not be worth the time, and you would likely get audited.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) - PART 1 |
From: Daniel Pollack, DPM
While I'd want to see more MRI slides, one view looks look it may involve the flexor tendon, so it can be a synovial sarcoma. Alternatively, I'd be worried about a fibrosarcoma. The mass is truly worrisome as it appears that there may be osseous invasion. Is there lymphadenopathy? If the mass is larger than 5 cm, it has a higher chance of being cancerous according to the AAOS. If the patient doesn't want this biopsied, or if it's biopsied and comes back positive for sarcoma, the patient should be referred to an oncologist.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2 |

I've been using 2% aqueous gentian violet for 40 years as a topical antiseptic after percutaneous surgery and in wound care. Castellanis paint is totally different chemically and does come in a clear form.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) |
From: Alan Sherman, DPM
I very much enjoyed reading the inspiring story of Gideon J. Lewis, DPM, a leading podiatrist who delivered this year’s commencement address at the University of Central Florida. What a positive role model for young and old podiatrists today, and an example of the principle that talented attractive people rise within any institution that they get involved in. Notice that he has been doing more than sitting in his office seeing patients. It takes more than that to build a career in podiatry. Always did. Kudos to Dr. Lewis!
