PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
Fitness Bands More About Marketing Than Medical Understanding: OR Podiatrist

My Nike FuelBand read 'lazy'. My friend's read 'fit'. But we had done essentially the same thing. We spent the day walking around San Francisco together - the same number of miles, same number of hills - but for whatever reason, our FuelBands were out of step. His registered thousands of steps more than mine did. The reality is that many devices claiming to monitor fitness and health probably overpromise and underdeliver. Dr. Jim McDannald, a podiatrist and health and fitness technology writer at The Wirecutter, a technology testing website, said many of these devices were more about marketing than medical understanding.

Dr. Jim McDannald

"People are getting fitness-tracker fatigue," McDannald told me. In large part, it's because many of these devices are simply inaccurate. You may have burned more - or fewer - calories than they say. Or, in my case, walked more steps. "Even a cheap pedometer is more accurate than these wristband trackers," McDannald said, though he acknowledged that wristbands do push people to get up off the couch.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
UK Podiatrist Goes Mobile

After 30 years with the NHS, an established ‘foot specialist’ is stepping out on her own to start a mobile podiatry practice. Sarah Webster, 50, decided to go it alone so she could help more people enjoy an active and independent lifestyle by treating them for foot-related ailments in the comfort of their own homes.

Sarah Webster

Sarah qualified in 1985 from Durham School of Podiatry after studying podiatric medicine for three years, and since then has enjoyed a successful and rewarding career working for the NHS in Harrogate. Almost 30 years in the business has not dulled Sarah’s irrepressible enthusiasm for the profession. Concentrating her new mobile practice in Harrogate and surrounding areas, she will be able to offer a wide range of treatments from routine nail care to more specialized foot care.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW
ID Podiatrist Gets Plea Deal for Growing Pot for "Preventive Medicine"

Peter Rickards, a Twin Falls podiatrist and anti-nuclear activist who received 3.2 percent of the vote running as an independent for governor in 1998, has reached an agreement to plead guilty to one charge of manufacturing marijuana, the Twin Falls Times-News reports. The deal includes a recommended penalty of five years of supervised probation and 30 days in jail with credit for time served, along with $2,000 in fines and 200 hours of community service. Rickards had faced two counts of trafficking marijuana after sheriff’s deputies raided his home last May, and found more than 4 pounds of dried marijuana and 32 live plants. Rickards told the Times-News, “I am grateful that after talking to the prosecutors directly for an hour, they agreed I was not trafficking but simply growing cannabis for myself.” Rickards said he smokes marijuana as “preventive medicine.”

SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS
Bret Ribotsky: How does prescribing orthoses fit into sports medicine?

Dr. Amol Saxena

Amol Saxena: A myth in podiatry is that sports podiatry is about making orthoses. Sports podiatry is about learning how to diagnose sports pathology. It's up to the podiatrist to decide if he or she is best at treating it. DPMs don't have to be able to treat all foot and ankle pathology, but they should be able to at least point patients in the right direction. When do you go from being a podiatrist to a podiatric surgeon? When you do more surgery than orthoses!

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)
Query: Office Ally and Kareo Electronic Billing Service

My office is making plans to leave the billing service that we are using. We wish to begin doing our own billing, but require a program that will link us to a gateway and the insurance companies. Currently, we are looking at Office Ally and Kareo. If there are any readers who are using these programs, I would be very interested in hearing your opinions as to how well these programs work for you. In addition, if anybody is using their integrated EMR programs, I would also love to hear what you think of those programs.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL)
From: Estelle Albright, DPM

I guess I've been confused for the past 40 years. I thought we do biopsies because we DON'T know what the patient has. Also, it appears that there is increased signal in the 4th ray.

Art Hatfield, DPM, Long Beach, CA, afootjob@juno.com

Tell the patient it may be cancer. If she still declines a biopsy, contact your malpractice carrier and ask how to appropriately refer her to a surgical oncologist. And have her sign off on declining surgical intervention, and put it in her chart.

Yes, it's called castellani paint, a colorless gentian violet. But, personally, I don't find it to be as effective.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
From: Robert Scott Steinberg, DPM, Cedric Cooper, DPM

One thing Dr. Sullivan left out. The State of Mississippi refused to expand Medicaid. They are one of 21 states, all with Republican governors. Enough said?

Robert Scott Steinberg, DPM, Schaumburg, IL, doc@footsportsdoc.com

This is not a political issue. If we continue to try to place the issue of healthcare delivery in a political basket, we as healthcare providers will continue to be controlled by the big money handlers such as the insurance industry. Placing political blame will continue to allow us to blindly fall into the traps set up by both political parties. Yes, in Tennessee many small hospitals are closing or becoming urgent care centers so that they will not be forced to provide healthcare to uninsured patients. They are closing because of the loss of federal Medicaid, Medicare, and uninsured money. However, doesn’t this force those same patients to come to your office for that same care? This will be a boom for the small individual practitioner.

Why? Our overhead is...
