APMA IN THE NEWS
APMA Launches "Today's Podiatrist Keeps America Active" Campaign

The American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) has announced the launch of its April National Foot Health Awareness Month campaign, "Today's Podiatrist Keeps America Active." The campaign will focus on the importance of foot health for all athletes and the role podiatric physicians and surgeons play in keeping athletes healthy. The campaign will educate the public about a podiatrist's expertise in sports medicine, from preventing injuries to diagnosing and treating sports-related conditions in the feet and ankle.

Dr. Jeffrey DeSantis

"Podiatric physicians and surgeons are very active in sports medicine," said APMA President Jeffrey R. DeSantis, DPM. "A foot or ankle injury can end a season or even a career. Our physicians provide both conservative and surgical care that keeps athletes in the game."

AT THE COLLEGES
Bako Diagnostics Provides Biopsy Workshop to DMU-CPMS Students

Forty plus second and third-year podiatric medical students attending the Des Moines Univeristy College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery (DMU-CPMS) participated in a hybrid virtual/hands-on biopsy workshop sponsored by Bako Diagnostics on March 30, 2021. William Scherer, DPM, a podiatric physician practicing in South Florida and Senior Podiatric Medical Advisor for Bako Diagnostics, presented a virtual lecture followed by a hands-on workshop on the campus of Des Moines University with CPMS faculty members, Ashley Dikis, DPM and Tim Yoho, DPM supervising students in attendance.

Bako Diagnostics Biopsy Workshop for DMU-CPMS Students

This was an exceptional opportunity for students to practice basic biopsy techniques used by podiatric physicians to diagnose dermatological lesions affecting the lower extremity. In the spirit of Bako Diagnostic’s mission, “To support and educate the podiatric medical community,” students were able to increase their knowledge and clinical skills.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Healthcare Compliance: Elements for an Effective Program - Part 3

By implementing a comprehensive compliance program, a practice can find and correct potential vulnerabilities while minimizing billing mistakes, reducing the chance of an audit, increasing payment of claims, reducing the chance of fraud and abuse, and promoting safe and quality care.

3. Establishment of reporting systems to encourage individuals to make complaints regarding compliance items without fear of retaliation.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)
RE: The Passing of Ronald Valmassy, DPM
From: Kevin A. Kirby, DPM

It is with great sadness I inform you that one of the legends of Podiatric Biomechanics, Dr. Ronald L. Valmassy, has passed after a two-year battle with cancer. Ron is survived by his lovely wife, Helen, his son, Paul, and his granddaughter Maggie. Ron left this world peacefully on Wednesday, March 31, 2021.

Dr. Ronald Valmassy

Dr. Valmassy was the most patient, caring, and enjoyable professor that we ever had at CCPM. Ron was not only my favorite Professor of Biomechanics at the California College of Podiatric Medicine (CCPM), but was also the Chairman of the Department of Biomechanics from 1974 to 1987. During that time, Dr. Valmassy taught thousands of podiatry students, residents, and podiatrists on podiatric biomechanics not only at CCPM, but also...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CASE PRESENTATION)
RE: Palmoplantar Keratosis Caused by Arsenic Toxicity
From: Leonard A. Levy, DPM, MPH

A 74 year old Vietnamese man presented with a one year history of pruritic nodules on his feet, reports the Medical Journal of Australia (Patel, K et al. April 2021; 214 (6). There was no reported history of gastrointestinal cancer or hereditary palmoplantar keratoderma. There was bilateral, focal, palmoplantar keratoses of the soles (~ 6 × 8 cm), with mild palmar involvement (~ 1 × 1.5 cm).

Palmoplantar Keratosis Caused by Arsenic Toxicity

Differential diagnosis included psoriasis, lichen planus, and verrucae vulgaris, but there were no other clinical features consistent with these conditions. The diagnosis was palmoplantar keratosis caused by arsenic toxicity.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)
Query: Functional Movement Specialist

Does anyone know of a course a DPM can take to become a functional movement specialist?

Robert Scott Steinberg, DPM, Schaumburg, IL

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL)
From: Martin M Pressman, DPM, Chris Seuferling, DPM

This patient deserves a vascular consultation! A non-healing wound in a patient with PAD can lead to toe amputation or leg amputation. No doubt he and his children would be upset if this occurred and you were treating him with a nitroglycerin potion. At least do a Doppler exam, and/or order arterial ultrasounds. The determination as to whether or not this patient could/should undergo angioplasty/revascularization belongs with the vascular team.

Martin M Pressman, DPM, Milford, CT

I know you inquired about Nitro-paste, but another thought is to address the cause of the deformity itself (i.e., hallux malleus) by performing FHL tendon release. This can be done in-office under local via minimal incision with an 18 gauge needle and often does not even require a suture. I've done hundreds of them, including PAD and geriatric patients with no healing issues as of yet (knock on wood). Surprisingly, this procedure has even worked for rigid deformities, as it relieves the "dynamic" component of the contracture.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS )
From: Jon Purdy, DPM

I remember working with a number of physicians when I was in training and it seemed we were surgically removing neuromas every week. In my practice of 18 years, it would be in the category of rare for me to remove a neuroma, and I do see them often.

What I have found are a fair number of misdiagnoses with the main culprit being tarsal tunnel or sciatic issues. I do the standard cortisone therapy, neuroma pads, and topical anti-inflammatories. Failing these therapies, I will often add a calcium channel blocker (gabapentin or pregabalin) and that seems to do the trick.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL)
From: W. David Herbert DPM, JD

Let's call this act the 21st century lawyer's full employment act. When I was in law school over 30 years ago, I remember students vowing to ensure that our society would become a more just place, especially for those who were so easily taken advantage of (i.e. Your patients!). Now those same people are senior lawyers working for the government and still trying to make this country a more just country. Remember, there is a reason why we cannot find the phrase "the rule of law" anywhere in our U.S. Constitution.
