PODIATRISTS AND DIABETES

ND Podiatrist Recommends Prevention and Early Treatment for Diabetics

Podiatrist Dr. Eric Hart says, "If you are concerned that you might have a foot ulcer or if you have noticed other changes to your feet such as unexplained swelling, pain, or change in the shape of the foot, see a podiatrist or your primary care provider. Early treatment usually leads to a quicker recovery and also may avoid more serious problems such as a diabetic foot infection or amputation. Any wound that does not show signs of healing in a week or two should be evaluated right away."

Dr. Eric Hart

Even if diabetics have no foot issues, preventive steps should be taken. "People with diabetes should have their feet examined at least once a year. Your primary care provider or podiatrist can help to identify problems such as early signs of nerve damage, poor circulation or other problems."

AT THE COLLEGES

Temple Marathon Volunteers to be Recognized at Hockey Game Tribute

Everywhere Boston’s professional sports teams travel, the cities they visit have been generous in their show of support to help cope with the recent tragedy. The Flyers, representing Philadelphia, will be trying their best for the cause when the Boston Bruins visit the Wells Fargo Center on Tuesday night.

Prior to the opening face-off, members of the Philadelphia Police and Fire departments will take part in a pre-game ceremony that includes a tribute video and performance of "God Bless America”. Throughout the game, there will be other tributes, including recognition of Temple Podiatry students who were on site at the Boston Marathon lending their services to those in need of medical assistance.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW

UK Podiatrist Removed for Falsifying Records and Selling Trust Items on eBay

Podiatrist Bruce Macdonald has been struck off the HCPC Register for falsely claiming completed training hours and for selling podiatry equipment belonging to NHS Sefton Primary Care Trust on eBay. A panel of the HCPC Conduct and Competence Committee heard that Bruce Macdonald enrolled at Edgehill University to complete a Clinical Examination course and admitted that he had not completed the required 30 hours of clinical practice stated on his submitted form, but had nevertheless filled in the form using a falsified signature and date. The Panel also heard that Macdonald was listed as the seller of the items on eBay. The Panel also heard that Macdonald admitted to selling thirty to forty items of Trust property on eBay for his own financial benefit.

SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS

Bret Ribotsky: How does the American Association of Women Podiatrists (AAWP) help young women podiatrists?

Dr. Kathleen Satterfield

Kathleen Satterfield: AAWP helps women podiatrists rise through the leadership ranks. Although about 50% of podiatry students are women, there is a much lower percentage of women in leadership positions, such as on state boards or in podiatry organizations. AAWP gives these women a chance to develop leadership skills.

(L-R) Drs. Glenn Gastwirth, Larry Harkless, John Mattiacci, and Jeffrey Jensen

Meet the Masters is broadcast each Tuesday night at 9 PM (EST). This week's guests are key players in the residency crisis: APMA Executive Director Dr. Glenn Gastwirth and Deans Drs. Jeffrey Jensen (Barry), John Mattiacci (Temple) and Larry Harkless (Western). You can register for future events by clicking here

QUERIES (CLINCAL)

Query: Post-Op Hallux Varus

This 65 year old Caucasian female had an orthopedic surgeon correct her left bunion in Nov. 2011 via a closing base wedge. The hardware was removed because the screws became loose and the heads of the screws were causing shoe pressure pain. The surgical correction left her with a hallux varus.

Post-op Hallux Varus

She presented with a pain-free 1st MPJ. Her biggest complaint was that "the toe was ugly and she had difficulty fitting in shoes.” Her PMH is unremarkable. She is very active. Suggestions as to the correction of the hallux varus would be appreciated. Since the joint is pain-free, is it necessary to correct this condition primarily for cosmesis?

Kel Sherkin, DPM, Toronto, Canada

QUERIES (NON-CLINCAL)

Query: Learning About Obamacare

Are there any seminars specifically directed to doctors on the effects of Obamacare to our practices? There are a couple of books which discuss the general effects pertaining to businesses. But what about changes in insurance, pre-authorization, government controls, treatment, etc.?

RESPONSES / COMMENTS - (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2

RE:  Podiatry's Secret Problem (Steven Moskowitz, DPM)
From: David L. Kahan, DPM

Amen! To Dr. Moskowitz. We have all been faced with the "new" patient to our office who just needs nails trimmed, has no class findings, etc. When you explain to the patient that this is not covered by Medicare or a secondary insurance, the usual reply is "well, my last podiatrist billed Medicare and they paid." They usually leave the office in search of that "other" podiatrist who will bill Medicare fraudulently.

Folks, we're talking about $43 for being stupid. Is it worth it?  Remember, it is because of "you" that Medicare and many other insurance companies flag podiatry or require prior authorizations from the UM departments for every little procedure we do. On the flip side of that coin, why can't we turn patients in for fraud also?

RESPONSES / COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 3

RE: Competency of APMA Leadership (Tip Sullivan, DPM)
From: Steven J. Kaniadakis, DPM

I say that the problems of leadership are not the mere focus of the top side of leadership. The bottom side of leadership (no pun intended) must be examined as well. The records show that states (like the one Tip Sullivan, DPM, Jackson, MS practices in) should have kept the one-year post-graduate and "preceptorship" program pathways viable.

Even when these states still carry over this pathway, the states' licensed podiatrist leaderships are insisting that all new DPMs must have a residency, and they are also increasing the number of years of residency training required. There are many DPMs in practice with one year post-graduate training programs. Alaska appears to now have a one year "surgical" residency requirement. MT and WY, I think, still have one-year, post-graduate program requirements.
