MIS Foot Surgery by CO Podiatrist Returns Hiker to Trail
Stephanie Klipple was unable to hike because of bunion pain. Last year, she decided that the time was right to take a break from hiking and seek relief from Mark Maurer, DPM at UCHealth Foot and Ankle Clinic in Pueblo. Klipple’s surgery consisted of a left bunionectomy with metatarsal osteotomy and a left hallux proximal phalangeal osteotomy.

Dr. Mark Maurer |
Dr. Maurer cut and, using a screw, realigned Klipple’s phalanx bone of the big toe. This was done to correct the angle of the big toe, which had become misaligned due to the bunion. This newer bunion correction technique has allowed Klipple to recover faster with less scarring and stiffness compared to traditional bunion surgery. Seven weeks after the surgery, she was back on the trail and going on easy hikes in Red Rock Canyon open space.

Feds Open Online Portal for Reporting Anticompetitive Practices in Healthcare
Federal agencies want to hear from the public about monopolistic and anticompetitive behavior within the healthcare industry. Thursday, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) unveiled HealthyCompetition.gov, an online portal where anyone can submit a healthcare competition complaint for potential investigation.
These submissions, the agencies said, can help the agencies ensure healthcare organizations provide quality care and pay their employees a fair wage.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
9 Tips for Collecting from Patients
Experts provide nine tips to help practices successfully collect patient balances.
9. Provide Training to front-office staff.
“It’s uncomfortable for people to ask patients for money,” says Reed Tinsley, CPA, healthcare consultant in Houston, TX. Provide training on how to communicate effectively to increase the likelihood of collections while maintaining positive patient relationships, he adds.
Think of COVID-19 as an opportunity to improve patient collections and the patient financial experience, says Sergio Quiej, Texas-based independent revenue cycle consultant. “This is an opportunity to create and develop relationships with patients — to learn how to approach each patient,” he adds.

A patient has traditional Medicare as well as an ACO as primary coverage. I am not part of the ACO. Am I supposed to bill the ACO or bill traditional Medicare?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS) |
From: PM News Subscriber
The feet can provide a window to one’s health if you look. A 48 year old female patient came to me for an issue with her feet... bunions. Upon examination of her feet, she presented mottling, with black and blue discolorations to a few digits. There was no pain or history related to the discoloration.
I referred her to a vascular specialist and told her to go the next day. The vascular surgeon called me to ask how I knew to refer this patient. The patient had 98% blockage to her carotid arteries and he did not know how she survived. She was throwing clots to her extremities. Sometimes you have to think "outside the box.”

From: Chris Robertozzi, DPM
Congratulations to Dr. Ronnie Lepow on his retirement. He has been an avid advocate for podiatry, not just in the United States but the world. His professional career was one of service above self. I had the good fortune to serve on the APMA Board of Trustees with Ronnie when he was President. He always led by example and was a mentor to me. Thank you for all you have done for this great profession.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1A |
The sadness of a loss such as this is unwavering, but with loss comes reflection. All of us who had the privilege to train under the guidance of Dr. Azzolini are better physicians, surgeons, spouses, sons/daughters, parents, and human beings because of his mentorship and what he expected from us each day. Strict but fair, kind but stern, demanding but understanding, tempered but funny, all characteristics of a true leader and one that completely resonated with me.
Simply put, you were prepared every day during residency without him ever telling you that you need to be prepared, that’s how he operated. His graduates are shining examples of the presence he had on all of us and for it, we are forever grateful, but deeply saddened that he is no longer here.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1B |
RE: Passing of Dr. Tom Azzolini (Joe Boylan, DPM)
I was a resident at St. Mary's Hospital at the Franciscan Health System Program when Dr. Azzolini first became our director. He was an asset to our program. With his wealth of surgical knowledge and his eagerness to teach us residents, he turned the program into a 3-year surgical program. We all benefitted from his medical and surgical knowledge.
I remember as residents sitting in the on-call room the night before cases. We all looked at the board to see who was operating the following morning. When Dr. Azzolini (we would call him AZZ), had a case, we would all jump to scrub in on his case. If there was no room to scrub, we would go just to watch him operate and teach us residents.
He opened his doors to us residents at the OR and his office. He was all about teaching and promoting the profession, in every way possible. He never turned any of us down and was always there with a helping hand. He will be missed by all his residents who went through the program. My condolences to his wife, daughter, and family.
Joseph Cione, DPM
