The Passing of Tom Azzolini, DPM

Sadly, I report that on 4-15-2024, Tom Azzolini,
DPM passed after battling recurrent lymphoma
cancer. My deep condolences to his wife Helen and
daughter Montana.

I met Tom when we were students at NYCPM. I was in
the Class of 1987 and he was the Class in of 1988.
As a student, Tom had a very clear vision of
getting the finest surgical training and then
practicing where he could use his skills to their
fullest extent. He graduated from NYCPM in 1988,
then completed 2 years of residency training at
Atlanta Hospital. In 1990, he began in private
practice in Hoboken, NJ.

We met again when Tom joined the medical staff /
podiatry department of St. Mary Hospital, Hoboken,
NJ, where I also was on staff as a new attending.

In a few years, Tom was chief of the podiatry
department and podiatry residency director.

At St . Mary Hospital, he expanded the Podiatry
Department’s role in Reconstructive Foot and Ankle
cases and Emergency Dept. trauma cases.

He had held for 30 + years his department chief &
residency director positions . He was ABPS & ABPM
board certified & a career long APMA member .

Tom was well read on the podiatry and orthopedic
literature. He always expressed a readiness to
share his knowledge & skills with his peers.
He gave back to our profession & established his
legacy by training dozens of podiatry residents &
hundreds of students .

He conveyed his academic & technical knowledge
daily in the operating room , clinic, office &
hospital settings .

Tom established & required high standards of care
for our podiatry department . He led by example.

He balanced his strong desire for excellence with
his disarming sense of humor.

After his love for his family & before his passion
for podiatry; was his love for the Great Outdoors .
Tom had a natural aptitude for hunting & fishing .
He owned land in Upstate New York and frequented
the State of Montana for hunting trips well before
it was trendy to do so. He also was an accomplished
skier and tennis player.

Many of the “giants” in our profession are not only
authoring books, teaching in our colleges or
fixtures on the lecture circuit.

Dr. Tom Azzolini's professional life’s work
exemplifies the giant he was serving in local
community leadership roles and positively impacting
lives and our Podiatry profession. A Podiatry Hall
of Famer in my book .

Tom you are missed. I miss you.

Rest in Peace my friend.
