Night Cramps Can Signal Loss of Bone: FL Podiatrist
Aches and pains come with aging—we all expect that. But they can signal more than just your body getting older. Frequent aches and pains are a warning sign of a vitamin D deficiency, which can lead to bone loss. If you also find yourself getting frequent muscle cramps, it can be a sign of vitamin/mineral deficiencies.
|
Dr. Vishnu Seecharan |
“Muscle cramps are especially common in feet and legs,” says Vishnu Seecharan, DPM, a podiatrist in Palm Beach, Florida. “Leg cramps that occur at night are often a sign that your calcium, magnesium, and/or potassium blood levels are too low.” He says that if these deficiencies continue over a long period of time it may lead to bone loss.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
9 Tips for Collecting from Patients
Experts provide nine tips to help practices successfully collect patient balances.
7. Keep a credit card on file.
This enables practices to simply charge the card once a patient responsibility is assigned, says Denny Flint, chief commercial officer at Millennia, a tech-enabled patient engagement company specializing in the recovery of end-to-end patient financial obligation. However, there are caveats.
“If your practice intends to accept card payment as well as store, process, and transmit cardholder data, you need to host your data securely with a Payment Card Industry (PCI)-compliant hosting provider that ensures the data is encrypted, password-protected, and compliant with PCI Data Security Standards,” he adds. These standards cover technical aspects of handling and managing cardholder data.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1 |
RE: The Passing of Tom Azzolini, DPM
From: Joe Boylan, DPM
Sadly, I report that on 4-15-2024, Tom Azzolini, DPM passed after battling recurrent lymphoma cancer. My deep condolences to his wife Helen and daughter Montana.
|
Dr. Tom Azzolini |
I met Tom when we were students at NYCPM. I was in the Class of 1987 and he was in the Class of 1988. As a student, Tom had a very clear vision of getting the finest surgical training and then practicing where he could use his skills to their fullest extent. He graduated from NYCPM in 1988, then completed 2 years of residency training at Atlanta Hospital. In 1990, he began in private practice in...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 2 |
From: Mark Stempler, DPM
I was saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Ira Tartack. I got to know him during my podiatric residency through the New York College of Podiatric Medicine way back in 1991. I found him to be so knowledgeable and approachable that I would always call him with difficult podiatric cases throughout the years. He always provided me with his sage and warm advice. I will really deeply miss him. He was my mentor but also a friend. Goodbye Ira.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
From: Frank Louis Lepore, DPM, MBA
I am excited to announce that the American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry (ABMSP) has taken a significant step towards promoting unification within the profession. Earlier this month, ABMSP proudly submitted its "Roadmap for Board Unification" to the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). This roadmap outlines a strategic framework aimed at fostering cohesion and collaboration within the podiatric community. ABMSP recognizes the importance of unity in advancing the profession and ensuring the highest standards of care for patients.
Through this submission, ABMSP reaffirms its commitment to working closely with APMA and other stakeholders to streamline board processes, enhance professional development opportunities, and, ultimately, elevate the field of podiatry.
Frank Louis Lepore, DPM, MBA, President, American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY) |
From: Kristin Happel
I have several concerns with this latest round of advice, starting with mentioning a potential second wave of the virus, which I can only assume refers to COVID-19. We are long past a second wave of it, so why should it be a concern? Or am I reading that wrong? But then there is this: "Require the vendor to charge only a percentage of what they collect." You can TRY to require that, but there are certain states where this is illegal. Does Denny Flint know this?
Kristin Happel, Podiatry Biller, Chicago, IL

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODING & BILLING) |
From: Wayne Feldman, DPM, Kristin Happel
It’s business as usual. I'm a solo practitioner who does his own claim submissions. After the Change Healthcare issue, I started using Availity to submit claims for horizon BCBS, blue card claims, Aetna, etc. Payments arrived within 2-3 days. United has its own site to submit claims. No issues.
Wayne Feldman, DPM, Fair Lawn, NJ
I was dealing with two practices that use the Change clearinghouse. One was smart, and sent their claims on paper within a week or so of the hack, and then switched clearinghouses as soon as possible, when it became evident that Change wasn't going to be up and running any time soon. They are doing fine. The other practice just kept holding out, and because they weren't prepared with cash flow, they are now out of business. Keep waiting, or make a change. Your call. Only you know what your practice is prepared for.
Kristin Happel, Podiatry Biller, Chicago, IL

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS IN THE NEWS) - PART 1A |
Dr. Block has created the almanac for an entire specialty. This, to my mind, is as close to immortality as it gets! Here's to another 30 years.
David Armstrong, DPM
Congratulations to Barry Block on the 30 year anniversary. But I would like to thank Barry for writing his great practice management book in 1988. I came out of my residency and didn't know where to turn to on how to run a practice. His book, Podiatric Marketing and Practice Management ,was the detailed road map that was needed.
Besides great advice on anything from how to build the office for optimum workflow to dealing with insurance companies, there was a chapter on being a professional. Wearing a freshly pressed shirt/lab coat and always have clean and polished shoes. These small things, patients notice. Here's to another 30 years.
