PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS - PART 1 |
Cell-Based Therapies are the Wave of the Future: TX Podiatrist
The general tactic of using stem cells for diabetic foot ulcers is not new; doctors can already use cells derived from the amniotic membrane of the placenta. Jeffrey Ross, DPM, MD an APMA spokesman, said he has personally found amniotic membrane cells to be very effective in wound healing.
|
Dr. Jeffrey Ross |
The cells are retrieved from the placenta of babies born by cesarean section, explained Ross, who is also an associate professor of surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Various companies market products containing frozen or dehydrated amniotic membrane cells that can be applied to diabetic foot ulcers. But in general, Dr. Ross said, cell-based therapies -- harnessing the body's own healing powers -- are the wave of the future.

Only Surgery Can Correct a Bunion: NY Podiatrist
Very simply speaking, "A bunion is a bump at the base of the big toe," New York City podiatrist Hillary Brenner, DPM says. Picture your big toe leaning sideways, toward your other four toes, and a large bony protrusion sticking out in the other direction — that's a bunion.
|
Dr. Hillary Brenner |
"The benefit of surgery is that you are changing the structure of the bunion," Dr. Brenner explains. "With conservative care, you are putting a Band-aid on the bunion in a sense; you will not take the bump away, just help with the pain of the bunion."

Women Should Return to High Heels Gradually: NY Podiatrist
The future of high heels looks wobbly—at least for now. Some women who ditched their high-heeled shoes during the pandemic have no plans to go back. Others are dipping their toes in slowly. Podiatrists have been advising those patients who want to return to high heels to take baby steps, starting with lower styles, then graduating or doing foot-muscle exercises to brace themselves for venturing out in heels again.
|
Dr. Suzanne Levine |
“Some of the exercises will include writing the letters of the alphabet with your toes, or maybe picking up a towel with your toes,” says New York-based podiatrist Suzanne Levine, DPM. She also recommends working on glutes and abdominal muscles to prepare for heels and help improve balance.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
5 Ways to Maximize Your Referral Program - Part 3
Traditionally, obtaining referrals consisted of visiting a physician’s office bearing breakfast baskets and new literature, organizing open houses, or hosting referring physician lunches. Digital referrals, however, guarantee you’ll reach the right person at the right time in the right place. Often, digital is cheaper, faster, more efficient, and is preferred by physicians in some cases.
3. Utilize Google Customer Match Advertising
Using information in your physician database—email address and phone number, for example —Google’s Customer Match advertising allows you to reach and re-engage referring physicians (and only referring physicians) via paid, targeted ads across Search, Gmail, YouTube, and Display. This is a great way to keep your practice front-of-mind for doctors and on the tip of their tongue when talking to their staff and patients.

QUERIES (CLINICAL) |
Query: Intermetatarsal Bursitis
I have a patient who developed a sharp pain "like walking on a pebble", with popping in the 3rd interspace after walking with ice cleats in late January. It appeared to be a typical Morton's neuroma but after no response to 3 cortisone injections along with tapings and met pads, an MRI was ordered. The only thing the MRI showed is some fluid in the interspace consistent with an intermetatarsal bursitis with no evidence of neuroma or other neurovascular abnormalities.
The patient hasn't been able to walk much with very limited activities because of the pain. Any ideas on how to treat an intermetatarsal bursitis conservatively?

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL) |
Query: COVID-19 Restrictons in New York
For New York State, are there any COVID-19 restrictions for the office besides masks, cleaning, and distancing?
Sam Bell, DPM, Schenectady, NY
Editor's Comment: PM News does not provide legal advice. In general, all states follow CDC Guidelines; however... each state, county, and municipality has jurisdiction to implement rules and regulations, which often vary depending on the current infection rate in a particular area. Since this is a moving target, it's best to stay informed of any changes in your town or city. If you have any doubts, it is recommended that you err on the side of extra caution.
