GA Podiatrist Promotes Foot Health Awareness Month
"Your feet are the foundation of your body. When you take care of them, you're taking care of your overall health," said Joseph Giovinco, DPM, CEO of Ankle & Foot Centers of America. "Foot Health Awareness Month is a great time to remind people that preventive care and early treatment can help them stay active and pain-free."
|
|
Dr. Joseph Giovinco |
Foot problems can take a wide range of forms and vary in severity. Bunions and plantar fasciitis are relatively common and can affect quality of life. Conditions like heel pain, arthritis, and neuropathy can affect overall health and increase the risk of falls. Diabetes also can cause severe foot problems that at first may seem unremarkable: According to the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), between 60 and 70% of individuals with diabetes experience neuropathy, leading to burning, tingling, or numbness in the feet.

SPCC to Honor MD Podiatrist Philanthropist
Diane Lebedeff, DPM was brought up to give back to her community, always taught that “you give 100% or you don’t give at all.” Over the last quarter-century, she has given her best to the Severna Park Community Center (SPCC), whether that be time, treasure, or talent in various seasons. SPCC Executive Director Sarah Elder explained that in selecting gala honorees, the center looks for people who are not only active with the SPCC but also active in the community in other ways.
|
|
Dr. Diane Lebedeff |
Elder cited an example of when the SPCC needed a new boiler, and Lebedeff raised $60,000 “overnight” to replace it. Lebedeff has spearheaded fundraising initiatives, served on the SPCC’s board of directors for more than 20 years, led many improvement projects around the facility and grounds, and more – all done quietly, out of a simple passion for helping others. Dr. Lebedeff's husband, Steve Gersh, DPM, is also a podiatrist.

CA Podiatrist Indicted for False Claims Related to Skin Grafts
A federal grand jury returned a one-count indictment today against Felipe Ruiz, 51, of Fresno, and Jose Gabriel Aguirre, 52, of Clovis, charging them with conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud, Acting U.S. Attorney Michele Beckwith announced. According to court documents, Dr. Ruiz was a podiatrist at West Coast Podiatry Inc. (WCP). Ruiz and Aguirre subsequently submitted claims to Medicare and Medi-Cal that falsely represented that Ruiz had applied the skin grafts to beneficiaries, when Aguirre had actually rendered the services. As a result, Medicare and Medi-Cal paid Ruiz millions of dollars for the false claims.

| QUERIES (CODING AND BILLING) | |
Query: Orthotics Denial
A male patient was seen for bilateral plantar fasciitis. The decision was made to proceed with custom orthotics, and Bio-foam impression casting was done and documented. The patient was dispensed the devices about 3 weeks later, and the claim was submitted to Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Iowa using L3000 LT,GA and L3000 RT, GA. We received a pre-payment medical record request from Optum, and after review of the records submitted, the claim was denied with the reason: "Documentation does not support services billed" with additional Remarks: “Not supported. The submitted medical records do not contain sufficient details of custom fabrication of the orthotic to support the billed charges. A custom fabricated item is one that is individually made for a specific patient. Of note, classification of custom fabricated requires a device which is fabricated based on clinically derived and rectified castings, tracings, measurements, and/or other images of the body part."
We submitted additional records, including the progress note from the visit at which the impressions were done, as well as the orthotic lab invoice with the patient's name, but it was again denied with the same reasoning.
Any suggestions on how to satisfy this documentation requirement when the fabrication and customization is done at an outside lab? It appears in this case that our billing service was able to appeal and get the claim paid, but it was a total of 9 months from the date of service.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 | |
RE: Podiatry’s Identity Crisis
From: Arden Smith, DPM
Background: this is my third winter since retiring and snow-birding. Both my former partner and I are both double boarded and we were lucky enough to have developed a very early niche in the medical and surgical treatment of the high-risk diabetic foot and limb salvage through having a satellite office within a large endocrine practice, beginning in the mid-1980s. This was something that we had very little training for and learned by the seat of our pants and attending diabetic foot conferences. We started out asking a friendly vascular surgeon if we could assist on referred cases and over a relatively short period of time, started asking him if he wanted to assist us; and then eventually stopped asking, other than the vascular consult. We also had a large volume general podiatry practice that was somewhat surgically oriented. We would see multiple generations in families.
Our general practice was a neighborhood practice in a middle class area, and our diabetic practice was a referral hub between two...

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2 | |
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD
I really want to thank Dr. Secord for his German compound word idioms. It plays precisely into the completion of defining podiatry. When I was 16, I still was fluent in German, attending a boarding school near Aachen. I still dream in German once or twice a month, but nowhere like it used to be. As a lone monk chants at the burial of as pope, “Tempus fugit, memoria mortem.” Time flies, remember death.
For quite some time, we have defined ourselves as the primary care givers of feet, especially for what we identify as sick feet. Let’s be honest, most of us don’t do reconstructive surgery on feet with multiple complex deformities and use external fixation. Orthopedic foot and ankle care givers don’t have time during their one-year fellowship to learn what we learn in seven years. If you want to make it a binary distinction, we take care of sick feet that have sometimes...

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) | |
Bob Russo was a remarkable healer, a compassionate leader, and a deeply loved member of the podiatric community. He had an impactful presence on the lives of so many—patients, colleagues, friends, and family. Dr. Russo led a life in the service of others. Through tireless work, long hours, and unwavering commitment, he brought comfort and healing to countless people. Whether it was through a kind word, a careful diagnosis, or simply the gift of presence, Dr. Russo reminded us what it means to truly care.
He was to me a wonderful mentor, a patient teacher, a thoughtful listener, and a friend. Many of us remember his musical talents on display at the annual conference. The legacy Dr. Russo leaves behind is one not just of professional excellence, but of deep humanity. Rest in peace, Dr. Russo. You have touched more lives than you could ever know, and your memory will forever be a blessing.
