RESPONSES/COMMENTS - PART 1

RE: The Passing of Robert Russo, DPM

It is with a heavy heart that NYSPMA announces the passing of Dr. Robert Russo. He was a beloved Past Board President in 2013-2014. Dr. Russo was an extremely well-liked and well-respected podiatrist in the Western part of the state. His colleagues remember him as being a great leader with a quiet disposition.

He went to school at the NYCPM. In his early leadership days, he helped tune the NYSPMA bookstore. He was also an accomplished musician. His colleagues have remarked on how much they enjoyed the rides to NYC events with him.

RE: Dissolution of the Step 2 Clinical Skills Examination in USMLE

From: Leonard A. Levy, DPM, MPH

A month after the World Health Organization (WHO) formally declared COVID-19 a pandemic on March 19, 2020, the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) temporarily suspended the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 2 Clinical Skills (CS). In May 2020, it was decided to suspend Step 2 CS exam administration for 12-18 additional months and then in January 2021, the NBME and the Federation of State Medical Boards, joint sponsors of USMLE, announced they were discontinuing Step 2 entirely.

With much effort now underway to authorize podiatric medical graduates to complete the USMLE, it is important that efforts simultaneously continue to educate and train podiatric medical students to become highly qualified in the acquisition of clinical skills equivalent to that of students in U.S. accredited MD and DO schools. This not only includes the acquisition of clinical reasoning but also communication skills.
