PODIATRY IN THE NEWS

Podiatrists Ranked #16 Among Top Wage Earners

When weighing a potential job opportunity, one of the primary factors is compensation. For those who wish to maximize their income, which jobs offer the highest salaries? Using the most recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the Foreign Labor Certification Data Center (FLCDC), CareerTrends found the 25 highest-paying occupations. Employment data from the BLS is from May 2014, while salary data from the FLCDC is from June 2015.

# 16 Podiatrists

Unsurprisingly, the list is dominated by health-related careers. Various specialized health positions — such as psychiatrists, dentists, and anesthesiologists — were among the jobs with the highest salaries.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW
Federal DEA Agents Raid GA Podiatrist's Office

Federal agents raided a Sandy Springs podiatrist’s office Monday, hauling off several boxes of what Channel 2 Action News was told contained patient records. Channel 2’s Mike Petchenik and his photographer watched as agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration and from the Office of Inspector General combed through the offices of Dr. Arnita Avery. At this time, Avery is not facing any criminal charges.

New CMS Primary-Care Payment Model Would Affect 20K Doctors

The CMS wants to pay practices a monthly fee to manage care for as many as 25 million patients in the agency's largest-ever plan to transform and improve how primary care is delivered and reimbursed. The Comprehensive Primary Care Plus initiative will be implemented in up to 20 regions and include up to 5,000 practices, which would encompass more than 20,000 doctors and clinicians.

Provider practices will be able to participate in two ways. In Track 1, the agency will pay a monthly fee to practices that provide specific services. That fee is in addition to the fee-for-service payments under the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule for care. In Track 2, practices will also receive a monthly care management fee and, instead of full Medicare fee-for-service payments for evaluation and management services, they will receive reduced Medicare fee-for-service payments and up-front comprehensive primary-care payments.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

8 Last-Minute Tax Tips for Physicians - Part 4

"If you are not self-employed and your employer offers a retirement plan, you should maximize your contribution to that plan. For 2016, the maximum elective deferral is $18,000 and the annual defined contribution limit is $53,000 (the same as a SEP-IRA). If your employer does not offer a retirement plan, then you can still contribute up to $5,500 in an IRA ($6,500 if you are age 50 or older). In addition, you may be able to make a contribution of $5,500 ($6,500 if your spouse is age 50 or older) to a spousal IRA even if your spouse does not have any earned income."

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODINGLINE CORNER)
From: Robert Scott Steinberg, DPM

Your exam, and then your plaster-of-Paris cast, should capture the forefoot varus or valgus. If you use a quality lab and order internal or external forefoot post correction, it should be included in L3000. Be very careful of any "creative" coding. I  also recommend using an orthotic lab that supports podiatry and is not a retail operation.

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP
RE: Mr. Malaprops Visits the Office with a New Medicine

Today, when asked what he was putting on his sore toe, the patient responded to my office assistant by saying that he was putting "Neosperm" on the wound (she was afraid to ask where he gets the medication)!
