PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS - PART 1
MIS Bunion Surgery Leads to Faster Recovery: IL Podiatrist

“Given how widespread bunions are, there have been many different ways to treat them through surgery,” said John Sigle, DPM, a podiatric physician. “One option is removing the portion of bone on the side of the big toe. Another is cutting and realigning soft tissue surrounding the big toe joint. However, a surgeon may also make cuts into the bone to realign the joint, or remove or reshape the bone in the big toe joint, among other techniques.”

Dr. John Sigle

With minimally invasive procedures, patients are able to return to work and normal everyday activities faster than with traditional bunion surgeries. “Minimally invasive surgical procedures with smaller incisions cause less disruption to soft tissue and result in less scarring,” said Sigle. State-of-the-art laser treatments are also provided after surgery to significantly reduce swelling and pain.

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS - PART 2
NY Podiatrist Discusses How to Choose an Insert

The material and structure of your insole are important factors, but there are plenty of other things to take into consideration when choosing a shoe insert. "You want to look for materials that are semi-resistant, materials that actually provide support," New York-based podiatrist Ernest L. Isaacson, DPM told Shop TODAY. "You want something that actually contours the arch and resists bending."

Dr. Ernest Isaacson

Dr. Isaacson notes that people with a higher arch will "do better with a less-rigid type of insert." They should also look for an insert that will contour the arch and bring the ground up in essence. On the other hand, those with flat feet might want an insole with a bit more structure.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Healthcare Compliance: Elements for an Effective Program - Part 6

By implementing a comprehensive compliance program, a practice can find and correct potential vulnerabilities while minimizing billing mistakes, reducing the chance of an audit, increasing payment of claims, reducing the chance of fraud and abuse, and promoting safe and quality care.

6. Development of policies to enforce standards of conduct with disciplinary measures for employees who fail to comply with requirements.

QUERIES (CLINICAL)
Query: Inserts or Adjustments for an Arborist

I’m looking for advice and recommendations on shoes or inserts or adjustments to accommodate a healthy, fit 35 year old professional arborist. He uses Buckingham steel climbers for tree climbing which hits his medial plantar calcaneal tubercle, hurting it. He is already doing his stretching exercises, wearing orthotics with heel cutouts for off-loading, wearing an equinus brace, wearing a night splint, had a cortisone injection, which all helped. But he feels the steel is hitting the very spot that causes him pain.

I wonder if there is something that can be done to the steel, shoes, or orthotics to help minimize the pressure to his distal heel where it hits the straps on his work boots.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (RELEVANT RESEARCH)
RE: Effect of Younger Siblings on Brace Non-compliance in Clubfoot During Ponseti Treatment
From: Leonard A. Levy, DPM, MPH

A study of club feet reported by orthopedists in Turkey indicated that having new siblings in the first years of treating the deformity with the Ponseti method resulted in an increase in non-compliance by minimizing the attention paid by parents of the children with the condition. The Ponseti method is a widely used treatment of talpes equinovarus, including correction of the deformity by manipulation and casting and maintaining the correction with a foot abduction brace.

It may be difficult to maintain the correction as a result of brace non-compliance by parents that have new siblings in the first years of the Ponseti treatment without promoting parental interest during the treatment process (Bozkurt C and Sipahioglu S, Effects of younger siblings on the brace compliance and recurrence in children with clubfoot during Ponseti treatment; Acta Orthop et Traumatolo Turc, 55 (2): 102-106 March 2021.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: Jack Ressler, DPM

I have been using G&L Transcription of Boca Raton, FL for over twenty years and have been very satisfied. They have many options for secure transmission of files. Turnaround time is great and their prices are competitive. Most important, they are very honest and reputable. Ask for Gary (owner).

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1A
From: Joseph C D’Amico, DPM

It was with great sadness that I received the news from Rich Blake, DPM that Ron had passed away. I met Ron while teaching at the California College Biomechanics Department. Ron was just beginning the Biomechanics Masters Program instituted by Paul Scherer, DPM. In fact, his research project was a film funded by a grant obtained by Paul entitled - The Lower Extremity Examination of the Normal Infant. We worked hand-in-hand on that film at Univ of California for months while teaching together every day in the CCPM clinic. I got to know and love Ron who was one of the gentlest, kindest, most unassuming gentlemen I’ve ever met.

When Paul Scherer, DPM became Dean, I was asked to become Director of the Biomechanics Department. When I agreed to return to New York, it was Ron who succeeded me right out of his residency! His text Clinical Biomechanics of the Lower Extremity is still a viable and often referenced resource for students and practitioners alike. One of the few regrets I have in my professional life is refusing to do a chapter in that text. Ron not only asked me once but several times but because I was busy with other projects at the time, I said no. Ron and Helen visited and stayed with me a few times in New York and although in recent years, I haven’t seen him as much as I would have liked, it always felt like he was a close friend. My heartfelt condolences to Helen, Paul, and family.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1B
From: Joe Agostinelli, DPM

The first time I saw Ron was in 1986 at the ABPO board certification exam as an examination candidate. Ron was the examination chairperson at the time. I had seen him lecturing at one of the California Super Seminars in Las Vegas before that. I was then fortunate to serve on the ABPO board of directors with Ron and came to know him well. We both shared a passion for sports and talked about baseball a lot at our board meeting breaks and dinners. I remember him not talking much at the board meetings, but when he did speak on a board topic, he was like “EF Hutton” - everybody listened and paid attention!

I also remember when he would write thorough and cogent letters to me on various podiatric issues as I moved through the board offices. His counsel and advice was vital in my dealings on the board. Knowing my passion for the NY Yankees, he sent me in 1995, now one of my favorite treasured baseball cards, a 1959 Topps Mickey Mantle card. Many of my colleagues have mentioned his podiatric educational contributions but I wanted to mention this personal remembrance of Ron, as to illustrate he was an outstanding caring human being, who made all around him feel important. He was an example of an exceptional doctor as well as an exceptional person you would love to have as a friend! RIP Ron, you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1C
From: Marc A. Benard, DPM

I echo the sadness and respect so eloquently expressed by others of our friend and colleague Ron Valmassy. Ron and I met 46 years ago at the California College of Podiatric Medicine, with him as a mentor and me as a student. We shared a passion for both biomechanics and podopediatrics and, as our careers progressed, we both served as Directors of the American Board of Podiatric Medicine (formerly ABPOPPM). When I became the organization’s Executive Director, Ron was its Treasurer. Elsewhere, his expertise as a lecturer was greatly appreciated by the directors of the Baja Project for Crippled Children at our annual seminars. His quality and dedication shone through in all venues in which we crossed paths.

The definition of knowledge, character, humility, and grace, Ron was, in his quiet way, a moving force in our profession. We will all miss him.

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP
RE: Outrageous Shoe of the Day

The hamburger shoe has arrived. Weren't you waiting for it? A British clothing company called End Clothing worked with Saucony to design this hamburger-inspired sneaker called the Shadow 5000 Burger. The shoe uses the same colors, but not actual ingredients, as burgers.

Sole Food?

The shoe comes with condiment packets labeled as "mayo" and "BBQ" that contain shoelaces, and everything is packed into a box resembling a takeout container. The sneaker is going for 99 pounds in England - and no, you can't eat it. Oh, that's about $136.
