RE: The Passing of Robert Russo, DPM
It is with a heavy heart that NYSPMA announces the passing of Dr. Robert Russo. He was a beloved Past Board President in 2013-2014. Dr. Russo was an extremely well-liked and well-respected podiatrist in the Western part of the state. His colleagues remember him as being a great leader with a quiet disposition.

He went to school at the NYCPM. In his early leadership days, he helped tune the NYSPMA bookstore. He was also an accomplished musician. His colleagues have remarked on how much they enjoyed the rides to NYC events with him.

RE: The Passing of Sanford Kaner, DPM
Dr. Sandy Kaner, 81, of Arizona and Michigan where he practiced for 38 years, passed away on Feb. 28, 2025. He graduated from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in 1970 and was residency director and involved with training for many years in Michigan.

Dr. Sanford Kaner |
Many podiatrists looked up to him as a devoted mentor. I was one of his residents and have appreciated his training and advice for most of my life. Rest peacefully, Sandy. You will be loved and remembered by many.

I am sorry to hear of Dr. Manzo's passing. He was a professor of anatomy back in 1969 and also a clinician when I was a first year student at NYCPM. May he rest in peace.

From: Justin T. Albright, DPM
I do appreciate the actions of many, but only seeking avoidance of 2.83% cut is insulting to physicians across the board. The WRVU model enacted in 1992 was $31. With inflationary adjustments, this should reach $72.
Americans need healthcare, safety, and education as a basic fundamental approach to how we treat each other. Inflation adjusted pay cuts have only affected 5 professions: doctors, teachers, policemen, firefighters, and librarians. This is not a sustainable path for this country, regardless of political affiliations; it ignores those basic fundamentals.
During the last 35 years, doctors have also been hit with POH ban in 2010 and lack of ...

RE: Highmark Contract Renewal
From: Gary S Smith, DPM
Highmark advantage of WNY/PA has sent out a contract renewal within the last couple of weeks. There are a couple of changes you should be aware of. First of all, the practitioner no longer needs to sign it. The entity that employs the podiatrist signs it, and all podiatrists covered under the group NPI are automatically included.
I believe this change is so that practitioners do not have to approve what they are paid. The fee schedule is separate, with a link to review it. If you look at the fee schedule, you will find that they are going to pay quite a bit less than Medicare for some of the common codes that we use.

From: Name Withheld 2
This subject has uncovered some very disturbing scenarios. Yes, it has taught us some important points when purchasing a practice, but on the flip side, one must not forget the obligations of the seller. When selling a practice, the seller should also be doing their due diligemce about the buyer. When I put my practice up for sale, I got several inquiries. One of them was from an established podiatrist seeking to purchase my practice. The party seemed very eager, actually too eager. They were not concerned with the price as much as they wanted the sale to be quick.
Although our telephone conversation was mostly positive, something wasn't right. At the time, social media was becoming big. I promptly started researching this potential buyer, only to find some serious allegations against him. The allegations turned out to be legitimate leading to a conviction and possible jail time. One must not forget that the seller of a practice has obligations to themselves, patients, and staff.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (JURY VERDICT REPORTER) - PART 1A | |
From: Vince Marino, DPM
I would like to reiterate and thank Dr. Oloff for his, as always, very wise insight and advice. DO NO HARM! I, along with I am sure many of our colleagues, have had the rare post-operative patient who has developed a DVT after surgery. Luckily, I have been fortunate to catch these patients early, get them in immediately to the hospital for Doppler ultrasound, and have them treated by either the ER doc or their PCP who I will ALWAYS personally contact as soon as the diagnosis is confirmed.
I too have also begun following our orthopedic colleagues, and all patients who are not already on some form of blood thinner and not allergic to ASA who undergo any form of surgery that requires them to be immobilized in a CAM boot, posterior splint, or cast and are put on ASA daily until mobilization is allowed and begun. This is being routinely done now by most, if not all, foot and ankle Ortho surgeons as well as the total joint replacement docs. Bottom line - the very old adage "BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY", I believe, is very appropriate.
Vince Marino, DPM, Novato, CA

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (JURY VERDICT REPORTER) - PART 1B | |
From: Steven Kravitz, DPM
The posts dealing with this particular topic refer to DVT as a primary concern for the point of discussion. Most important, in the multiple responses related to this ailment is a general principle that cross referral of patients never increases risk, unless one is dealing with incompetent physicians.
A similar area of concern regarding the appropriate referral for medical conditions that can be threatening is the subject of oncology. I often fear podiatrists not referring quickly enough or opening cases without awareness of potential risk involved; and developing a potentially dangerous situation for the patient and increased liability for their practice.
Dr. Kesselman, Jacobs, and others come to the conclusion, very nicely stated in the last few lines of Dr. Kesselman's extended discussion. Hopefully, we can all move on, put our egos aside, do as best for the patient, decrease our liability, and always seek second opinion whenever there's a question that could affect the quality of patient care, especially in life-threatening situations.
Steven Kravitz, DPM, Winston-Salem area, NC
