CA Podiatrist Discusses How to Stay Healthy When Exercising
According to Steven L. Rosenberg, DPM, "Incorporating rest and recovery into your fitness routine can help you avoid injuries and allow you to feel your best. Getting the proper amount of sleep each day is a vitally crucial factor in staying healthy. The more rest combined with exercise and a healthy diet will impact how you perform in the workforce. Exercising regularly decreases work stress, staying pain free, and getting the proper amount of sleep is the recipe for a balanced and successful lifestyle."
|
|
Dr. Steven Rosenberg |
"Regardless of what form of exercise you choose, your feet play a significant role; they are the engines that keep your body moving. So, when your feet hurt, you hurt all over, the engine shuts down, your energy changes, and your normal sleep patterns are disrupted," says Dr. Rosenberg.

CA Podiatrist Publishes New Study in Scientific American
Kevin Kirby, DPM of Sacramento, California has published an article in Scientific American entitled "Evolutionary Future of the Fingers and Toes.” In his anthropological research paper, he postulates, "For thousands of years, humans have been putting on their shoes using their index finger as a shoehorn - and in some kind of Darwinian way we’ve adapted, and the index finger in a couple of thousand years, it's going to look like a shoehorn."

In this video, Dr. Kirby postulates that because the index finger has been used to assist in putting on shoes, it will eventually assume the shape of a shoehorn. Not all podiatrists agree. Bryan Markinson, DPM, Chief of Podiatry, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai cautioned Dr. Kirby, “when predicting evolutionary changes, Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

Alira Health Joins Forces with APMA to Advance Podiatric Registry
Alira Health, a global advisory and clinical research firm, has joined the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), the largest professional association representing podiatrists, physicians, and surgeons who treat the foot and ankle, as a corporate member to help advance APMA’s Podiatric Registry. The APMA registry supports researchers’ understanding of diseases and ways to treat them. The addition of Alira Health’s deep clinical and Real-World Evidence (RWE) expertise brings even more insight into real patient experiences, contributing to better outcomes.
|
|
Dr. Dyane Tower |
"APMA is excited by the opportunity to drive powerful research to improve patient care in conjunction with Alira Health," said APMA Senior Medical Director Dyane E. Tower, DPM, MPH, MS. "The real-world evidence in the APMA Registry has tremendous potential to advance clinical research around diabetic foot ulcers with data that is representative of the actual patient journey that our physicians see in their practice," Dr. Tower said.

6 Steps to Starting an RPM Program
Here are six steps to get you started with a remote patient monitoring (RPM) program:
2. Research reimbursement
The second step: Find out what your payers will reimburse for says Marc Gruner, DO, MBA, a co-creator of the remote therapeutic monitoring (RTM) codes. AMA has compiled a review of which commercial payers cover the codes, but physicians should check with specific commercial payers to find out if they reimburse for the codes.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (BILLING & CODING) | |
From: Kristin Happel
I have been billing/coding podiatry for almost 30 years, and I don't know of any "one source" that can adjudicate any particular question you may have. My suggestions are look to at your Medicare LCD, or look at the other insurance LCDs, if the question pertains to an insurance other than Medicare, and also use the coding tools provided by the APMA/your state podiatry association, if you are a member of either of them.
Also, The Podiatry Coding Companion is a must have for any podiatry office, but it doesn't necessarily address the vagaries of certain billing/coding questions offices may have. I am sure that if you post your billing question, I or other billing/coding experts on this forum would be happy to answer it.
Kristin Happel, Podiatry Biller, Chicago, IL

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (INSURANCE ISSUES) - PART 1A | |
From: Elliot Udell, DPM
We are using a billing service called Hippocratic Solutions. They only deal with podiatrists and when this crisis evolved, they started submitted paper claims. If you need this or any other billing-related services, contact them and ask for Peter, the director.
Elliot Udell, DPM, Hicksville, NY

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (INSURANCE ISSUES) - PART 1B | |
From: Kristin Happel
1. Your staff should have always had the correct addresses on file for all insurance companies, should the need to send claims on paper arise. These addresses are easily found online. Have your staff get them in place.
2. All you need to send claims on paper is CMS-1500 forms and a printer.
3. While I am sure there are billing companies out there who will be more than willing to take your money to send claims on paper (and it will be a complicated, delayed process), the fact is your staff should be able to do that right now and should have already sent claims in weeks ago. Why didn't they?
4. I don't think there should be any game plan moving forward from "podiatry" to address this issue, because it falls on the podiatry practice to address it themselves. Either you were prepared for this type of thing, or you weren't. If you weren't, then you should be for the future. That is your responsibility, not anyone else's. Technology is great, until it isn't. If you aren't prepared to send claims in on paper, you have to fix that, now.
Kristin Happel, Podiatry Biller, Chicago, IL
