PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
MA Podiatrist Discusses Treament of Heel Pain

Heel pain, an inflammation of a thick band of tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes, can start as a minor annoyance that people deal with for months before they are properly diagnosed with plantar fasciitis – a condition that one in 10 people will suffer from in their lifetime. Greg Catalano, DPM, FACFAS, a Massachusetts foot and ankle surgeon and Fellow member of ACFAS, states that options for heel pain are becoming more advanced and focused on helping the patient's body heal the injury itself.

Dr. Greg Catalano

According to American College of Foot and Ankle (ACFAS) surgeons, depending on the severity of a patient's plantar fasciitis, these latest treatment options can include: Injection therapy, shockwave therapy, ultrasonic treatment, and surgery.

PODIATRISTS AND DIABETES
TX Podiatrist Uses Team Approach to Deal with Diabetes Problem

Dr. Thomas Zgonis, a podiatric surgeon with UT Health San Antonio and an internationally recognized expert on diabetic foot and ankle reconstruction, said he knows exactly how to fix the diabetes problem in San Antonio. Also, a textbook author and professor of orthopedics at the medical school, he envisions a day when a half-dozen or more freestanding, government-funded “diabetes wellness centers” spring up around the city, providing the full range of care to people with diabetes, including access to specialists, basic lab work, advanced imaging, and rehabilitation services.

Dr. Thomas Zgonis (Photo: Kin Man Hui)

“The No. 1 thing is to educate patients and their families,” Zgonis said, on such basic things as the importance of wearing proper footwear, doing regular feet inspections, and sticking to diet, exercise, and medication regimens. “We could prevent a major number of amputations.” A dashing figure as he strides the halls of the Medical Arts & Research Center, Zgonis already has made his dream a partial reality, in the form of a once-a-month clinic there that brings together a host of specialists required in diabetes care and surgical reconstruction — vascular surgeon, cardiologist, and podiatrist, with other specialists to be added soon — under one roof.

PODIATRISTS AND POLITICS
No One Called for Gun Control after Congressional Shooting: OH Podiatrist

As far as gun legislation goes, Rep. Brad Wenstrup said he isn’t sure banning AR-15 rifles will stop mass shootings. But he is sure of one thing: He said no one called for gun control after a gunman opened fire at a congressional baseball practice in June, injuring GOP House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and several others.

Dr. Brad Wenstrup

Wenstrup said he’s partnered with Dr. Raul Ruiz, a democratic representative in California, to approach gun violence from a “healthcare” standpoint by examining what drives homicides. “We both have experience in this arena of taking care of people who have been victims of violence,” Wenstrup said.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW
NJ Podiatrist Gets 3 Years for $3M Insurance Fraud

A North Haledon podiatrist who had offices in Passaic and Paterson got three years in federal prison Monday for conning Medicare and private insurers out of $3 million for more than 150,000 physical therapy sessions conducted by unlicensed and unqualified employees. Because there's no parole in the federal prison system, Anthony J. Enrico, DPM will have to serve nearly all of the sentence.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Areas of Financial Waste to Cut at Your Practice - Part 2

Here are a few ways to reduce financial waste, according to practice management and accounting professionals from across the country:

2. Check Vendor Contracts

For the most part, physician practices do a nice job of operating efficiently. However, one area that often gets overlooked is vendor relationships. It's common to negotiate a contract for medical and office supplies and then not revisit it for a long while. Unfortunately, if a contract times out, some vendors will raise prices without much, if any, notice. Practices can incur additional expense without even knowing it." Steve Vasko, certified public accountant, Blue and Coo, LLC, Columbus, OH

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (EHR)
From: Raymond F Posa, MBA

In response to Dr. Mitchell’s questions, I have three EHRs that are very capable products and have widespread usage in podiatry.

Let me start with this caveat, I have not and do not sell any EHR products, nor am I paid or endorsed by any EHR company. My recommendations are based on nearly 20 years of technology experience in the medical field, specifically podiatry. I have spoken to thousands of users, have been to hundreds and hundreds of podiatry offices across the country, and I have been to many of the EHR manufacturers' offices and have seen the inner workings of their software companies. The recommendations I present are...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY)

1. Cut Back on Supplies. -This should never be a problem in a podiatry office. There needs to be one person whose job it is to keep track of supplies and order them in quantities that are consistent with needs and historical use. It is not a big job, but a very responsible one.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 1
From: Dennis Shavelson, DPM

Muscle engine weakness living in the lower extremity originates and depends on the ability of the foot to provide stability and support architecturally. Stresses are produced when running that the body must adapt to in order to perform. When these stresses to the body do not translate into improved performance, they translate into pain, suffering, injury, and poor performance.

One needs to consider taking the time, energy, and dedication to examine, diagnose, and treat genetic and epigenetic factors that are precursors/lateral to muscle engine failures in order to establish leverage, healthy engineering, and efficient performance of the myofascia and CNS as underpinnings for the success of strengthening programs.

That is in the domain of podiatrists with special interests in sports, performance, and body movement like Dr. Conenello. I wish Dr. Conenello continued success with his health. I’m very proud of him.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 2
From: Name Withheld

With all respect to Dr. Baum, I have to differ with his opinion about keeping the anonymity of podiatrists involved in legal issues. When I first started reading queries on the PM News, I agreed with Dr. Baum about not reporting podiatrists names associated with unfavorable legal rulings. Dr. Block did give an explanation as to the importance of reporting such instances. Not only did it made a lot of sense to me, it proved invaluable when it came time to sell my practice.

I received an inquiry from a potential buyer wanting to purchase my practice. He seemed very serious and well qualified. After our productive phone call, I Googled him only to find out he was involved in a serious legal issue that, if found guilty, he would receive jail time and potentially have his license revoked permanently. A scenario of him purchasing my practice before his trial was a possibility.

It’s unfortunate that fellow podiatrists can become involved in serious legal issues. I think it’s only fair to be made aware of pertinent information that could be involved in making important decisions, especially if partnerships, practice sales, and more are involved.
