RPM Can Break the Chronic Disease Cycle for Underserved: NM/MI Podiatrists
According to Janet Simon, DPM (NM) and Gary Rothenberg, DPM (MI), "Remote patient monitoring (RPM) devices are swiftly becoming a mainstay of the chronic disease management toolkit. From continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) for people with diabetes to Bluetooth-enabled scales and blood pressure monitors for those with cardiovascular conditions, smart devices are steadily working their way into the homes and onto the bodies of people who need regular monitoring to ensure their health and well-being."
|
|
Drs. Janet Simon and Gary Rothenberg |
"Only by addressing the fundamental issues of trust, technology, and reimbursement will our healthcare system be able to deploy RPM devices in an equitable, effective, and empowering manner. It is crucial to act quickly to break free of past patterns for Native Americans — and for others who have a right to equal access to the best possible chronic disease care," say Drs. Simon and Rothenberg.

NY Podiatrist is a Shining Example of a Woman Breaking Barriers
Breeann Wilson, DPM is the only black female podiatrist in Buffalo. While it is important to note, she said it makes her "sad if I'm being honest because we definitely have a need for good podiatric care."
|
|
Dr. Breeann Wilson |
She added, "when we don't have enough representation, even certain cultures are more comfortable with people in their in their same culture group. And I'm only one person and unfortunately I can't see everybody, which makes me sad because I wish more people would come into the field and and be there to help our community and taking care of their feet."

Lack of Podiatry Services for Diabetic Patients in Leitrim Branded ‘Appalling’
The lack of podiatry services for diabetic patients in Leitrim, Ireland has been branded as appalling. It is believed that the Chronic Disease Management Diabetes Team currently has a reduced cohort of staff including podiatrists, and due to the recruitment freeze, vacancies in the team cannot be filled.
|
|
Martin Kenny |
Martin Kenny, Deputy for Sligo, Leitrim, North Roscommon and South Donegal, has described the lack of podiatry services for diabetic patients in Leitrim as appalling. Deputy Kenny said he has been contacted by numerous people throughout Leitrim who cannot access podiatry services in the county.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
6 Strategies for Back Office Billing
The front desk staff is essential for checking in patients, collecting copays, and verifying insurance. But there’s more to the story, and out of sight doesn’t mean out of mind. Much of the heavy lifting for billing and collections is done in the back office, so it’s even more important to have a deep bench of talent, says Tammie Olson, manager and coding and compliance strategist at Management Resource Group.
5. Conduct patient flow analysis regularly
Time is money, and any time there is a patient flow problem, it costs the practice. The office manager or practice manager should analyze patient flow for all services provided, find problems, and identify ways to streamline the processes. For example, you might perform a patient flow study. This will tell you how long it takes patients to complete the check-in process and be placed in the exam room. This will help you track and streamline processes at the front desk. A shorter check-in process can improve patient satisfaction and help keep providers from falling behind schedule.

| QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL) | |
Query: Wound Care in TN
I am thinking about starting a practice in TN. My current practice does a decent amount of wound care, split between my private office and the hospital/wound care center. I would like to continue to do this if I move my practice. I was wondering if the providers in TN have a similar split? Or is wound care primarily done in the office setting?

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (APMA HOD) - PART 1A | |
From: Kathleen Neuhoff, DPM
I always find it interesting that the arguments for board certification focus around “protecting the public”. I think the training we receive and the abundant malpractice attorneys do a pretty good job in this area.
I am board certified by both ABPS and ABPM and in more than 30 years in practice, I have not had a single patient ask about board certification. We also ask every new patient what brought them to our practice. The most common answers are patient/family or physician referral. NEVER has a single patient listed board certification as a reason to choose me! I do not think the reasons for making board certification difficult to obtain have anything to do with protecting the public.
Kathleen Neuhoff, DPM, South Bend, IN

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (APMA HOD) - PART 1B | |
From: Ivar E. Roth, DPM, MPH
My knee jerk reaction to Dr. Agostinelli’s post is that I like it. In combination with Dr. Trantalis’ post, we just need to be MDs in the future and be the foot and ankle specialists with something like 2 years of podiatric medicine. This would include the same first year internship as the MDs and then 2 years of pure surgical training with fellowships past that.
This would solve the declining enrollment issues because the schools would just basically be pre-determined MD foot specialists and then enter into the residency pool for podiatry. Brilliant.
Ivar E. Roth, DPM, MPH, Newport Beach, CA

RE: The Passing of Allan Spencer, DPM
Dr. Allan Spencer was a great professor and a wonderful person. He was kind, smart, and always generous with his time. As a student, I remember, he would always make time to teach. As a student, at times I found biomechanics challenging, yet after clinic, he would always take the time to explain any challenging concepts. He always was kind and gave students the utmost respect.
His peaceful demeanor made learning very easy. I know his son Scott will follow in his steps as he teaches the next generation. My condolences to Scott and his family. Your dad was a great teacher and a special man.
Michael Levi, DPM, Santa Monica, CA, OCPM Class of 1987

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC PRODUCTS AND SERVICES IN THE NEWS) | |
From: Richard Bloch
I have had the privilege of representing the Maryland Podiatric Medical Association as General Counsel since 1979 and serving as its Executive Director since 1997. In that time, I have worked with many dedicated and hard-working members of MPMA and APMA. Ross Taubman and Jim Christina both served on the Board of Directors and all of the officer positions, including President of MPMA. With their dual retirements, it brings to mind all that they have accomplished.
I can unequivocally say that the profession will miss them. They have devoted many hours and lots of energy promoting and furthering the profession. Their accomplishments have impacted many aspects of student recruitment, scope of practice, and the education of the public on the importance of podiatric care. I wish them a long, enjoyable, and relaxing retirement and know they will continue their generous support of the profession of podiatry.
Richard Bloch, Executive Director, Maryland Podiatric Medical Association
