INTERNATIONAL PODIATRY IN THE NEWS
UK Podiatrists Celebrate 50th Anniversary of Podiatry Association

On the 10th March 1974, 17 chiropodists with vision and energy met in the Medical District of London and signed a memorandum that they would form a body to promote podiatric surgery. In spite of heavy opposition from some segments of the medical profession, and indeed from our own professional body, with the invaluable support of a small number of American podiatrists, the Podiatry Association was formed. From the art of podology, we went to the science of clinical biomechanics, and gradually surgical procedures were introduced.

UK Podiatrists Celebrate 50th Anniversary of Podiatry Association

50 years later, the profession in the UK enjoys full recognition, with many podiatric surgeons holding consultant posts and carrying out a full range of foot and ankle surgery. The spin-offs have been that many non-surgical podiatrists hold consultancies and professorships in rheumatology, diabetology, and dermatology. These achievements were marked 50 years later by a lunch on the 9th of March at the Sheraton Grand Hotel, Park Lane, London. While only a small number of the signatories are still around, the event was celebrated by the remainder and by a number of our valued supporters. We could not have achieved this without the valued cooperation of our American colleagues.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL)
From: Michael A. Uro, DPM

While I am very happy that Dr. Marino responded well to his carpal tunnel surgery, I wanted to point out that MLS laser treatments can help to minimize and in some cases totally alleviate the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome.

I  have an MLS laser in my office. I was experiencing bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome. I treated myself using the laser, and after 3 to 4 treatments my symptoms subsided. I realize that not everyone has an MLS laser; however, if you can perhaps find a chiropractor or other practitioner who has one, I would recommend this treatment. Obviously, as podiatrists, we cannot treat carpal tunnel syndrome. Again I treated myself. The laser works on numerous nerve conditions on feet, such as tarsal tunnel syndrome and neuromas.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (APMA HOD)
From: Jon Purdy, DPM

I’m amazed that 100% of DPMs are not in approval on one consolidated board. I’m also amazed that the proposal for one board is trying to reinvent the wheel. Currently, there already is a board called the American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry. This board is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) under the ISO International Standards ANSI/ISO/IEC/17024:2003 for Accreditation for Bodies Operating Certification of Persons, as well as accredited by URAC (former Utilization Review Accreditation Commission).

This board gives certifications in multiple areas of podiatry based on training, experience, and testing. The biggest advantage is that one can become certified at any point in their career as long as they meet these requirements. This presents to the medical community and insurances as one board. It also eliminates current exclusions based on time constraints, which has never made any sense.

Keep in mind, there are thousands of excellent podiatrists in practice who are “certified”, when with today’s requirements would not qualify. I think this dispels the argument of public safety. Public safety is determined at a state and local level. An orthopedic surgeon could technically operate on any bone in the body under their license, but hospitals often will not allow certain procedures based on experience, not on “certification”.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1A

Allan Spencer DPM was a mentor of mine way back in the early 1970s when I was a student at OCPM. He laid a great foundation of podiatric biomechanics and lower extremity orthopedic knowledge that has been my foundation of the science, clinical, surgical knowledge, and skills. His son Scott carries on his professional legacy. May his memory be a blessing.

Marshall Solomon, DPM. OCPM Class 1973

A true professor and gentleman; even when some of the class of “75 called him “Stick Man”. RIP, He will be missed.

Aaron C. Olson, DPM

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1B

I had the pleasure of training under Dr. Spencer from 1981-1985 and still use everything he taught me. I could go to him anytime with any question and he would sit and help drive home biomechanics and fabrication of orthoses until I got it. My condolence to his son Scott who was a year or two behind me and now a professor at Kent....also a smart and wonderful man. I will carry Allan’s memory and teaching with me until it is my time to join him.

Martin T Girling, DPM, Class of 85

I am so sorry to learn of Dr. Allan Spencer’s passing. In my early days in podiatry sales with Pedinol, I was working with OCPM selling my products. Dr. Spencer was always so kind, supportive, and would always listen to my pitch! In later years, after his retirement, he would stop at my exhibit to say hello and chat. My condolences to Dr. Scott Spencer and his family.
