NYCPM’s Match Day 2016 a Festive Occasion
NYCPM’s Match Day 2016 was a festive occasion, celebrated with a breakfast reception and a chance to mingle with faculty before the ceremony, which was led by President and CEO Louis L. Levine and Michael Trepal, DPM, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean. After the breakfast reception, the students moved to one of the main lecture halls where they were greeted by faculty, staff, and administrators in anticipation of the match ceremony.

Exactly at 11 am, the time that the match results were revealed in all of the schools, the seniors opened their envelopes as a class and the room erupted into cheers, hugs, laughter, high fives, and a plethora of signs of celebration that carried into the halls and other parts of the College.

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS |
MN Podiatrist Uses Tenex Procedure to Treat Plantar Fasciitis
When Brenda Denelsbeck developed a bone spur on her heel and inflammation in her plantar fascia, her path led to podiatrist Dr. Alissa Redding at Avera Marshall. Dr. Redding started Brenda on physical therapy to try to reset her pain naturally. "She tried stretching, icing, changing her shoes, ibuprofen, and nothing seemed to be really progressing." said Dr. Redding. Thankfully for Brenda, Dr. Redding was bringing a new option online for bone spurs and ligament issues. It's called the Tenex procedure. "The Tenex procedure is a modification of traditional planter fasciitis surgery. It uses ultrasound to find the diseased tissue and then the microtip uses ultrasonic energy to get rid of the diseased tissue without harming healthy tissue." said Dr. Redding.

Traditional repair requires a large open incision and cutting the ligament, followed by more restrictive post-op physical therapy. With the Tenex, it's the smallest of cuts and patients are ready to walk out when it's finished. "It was immediate that pain was gone and I didn't have to clutch onto the bed and the counter as I stepped out of bed in the morning! I could actually walk without limping. It was amazing to me," said Denelsbeck.

SURGICAL AWARDS |
PA Podiatrist Receives BoneWelding Award
Dr. Thomas M. Rocchio, senior partner at PA Foot and Ankle Associates, was recently awarded the prestigious WoodWelding Award for his expertise in the use of bone welding technologies for fixation of bunion osteotomies. The award was presented in Stansstad, Switzerland.
|
Dr. Thomas Rocchio (R) with Robin Beuscher of Stryker Orthopaedics, Germany |
BoneWelding is an ultrasound-based insertion method for bonding bioresorbable and thermoplastic polymer pins into bone. During insertion, the polymer pin melts and fuses with the bone, increasing mechanical stability compared to conventional screw-plate fixation.

NH Podiatrist Suspended Again Over New Concerns
A Concord podiatrist whose medical license was suspended two years ago for unsanitary practices has once again been barred from treating clients, this time over new concerns about his mental state. In an emergency order released Tuesday, the state Board of Podiatry said Dr. Edward Newcott has acted erratically in recent months, appearing confused at times, forgetting recent events and the names of close acquaintances, and at times requiring assistance from board members. “The case involves imminent danger to life and/or health,” the order states.

HEALTHCARE NEWS |
Fast-Acting Opioids Get New Boxed Warning
The FDA is updating the labels on immediate-release opioids like Vicodin with new boxed warnings, and an indication for use only in the most severe pain, the agency announced. The boxed warning alerts prescribers to the risk of misuse, abuse, addiction, overdose, and death associated with the drugs, as well as the risk of neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS) if taken during pregnancy.
The new indication also reserves the drugs for pain "severe enough to require opioid treatment" that doesn't respond to other therapies. The agency is also updating label safety information on both immediate-release (IR) and extended-release/long-acting (ER/LA) opioids about the risk of drug interactions that can lead to serotonin syndrome, as well as effects on the endocrine system, including adrenal insufficiency, and on decreased sex hormone levels.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) |
From: Stan Kalish, DPM
I would like to reflect on the passing of my friend and colleague, Ollie Foster. I can fondly think of the great leaders of our profession who have gone - men like Marvin Steinberg, Earl Kaplan, Jim Ganley, and Gerard Yu, to name a few. All, like Ollie, were humble and affectionate individuals with a greater sense of their role as leaders rather than their egos. There were so many warm and humorous times with Ollie I can recall over the years.
I remember in 1976, the first year of board certification, which was held at the Beverly Hilton in LA., Ollie did not know that a Hollywood star-studded gala was being held at the same time. The valets, thinking he was a movie star, let him through the procession of limousines. When I saw him enter the hotel, I told all my colleagues to cheer when he entered. All the movie stars looked at Ollie and asked, "who is that?".
Ollie was so special. He was an ecumenically sensitive man who saw no race boundaries, but only saw his colleagues who needed his tireless efforts and love. I will miss my days with him in Davos learning AO, my hours with him getting educated on great African-American music at Rosie's in New Orleans, and so many more wonderful memories. God Bless you, Ollie. You will be sorely missed.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS) |
From: Elliot Udell, DPM
We can complain about the size of podiatric medical school classes from now until the cows come home, but nothing will be done. Although podiatric medical colleges "give birth" to all practitioners, their prime responsibility is not to the profession, but to themselves. If taking in more students is economically best for the institution, the directors of the institution have an obligation to their boards of directors to fill every seat.
That being said, podiatric medical education differs from MD and DO education in one major area. If a person graduates from an MD or DO college and, for the sake of discussion, does not get into a "family practice" residency, there are a host of other specialties that person can go into. If he or she opts out of taking a residency, the graduate can choose other related careers such as hospital administration.
Unfortunately, the way most if not all state licensing laws are structured, if a podiatrist does not get a residency in podiatry, he or she just wasted four years of his or her life, along with a boat load of money spent on tuition. Although our teaching institutions are under no obligation to ensure that each graduate gets a residency, it seems only fair and proper that all potential students be warned that some graduates will not be able to practice podiatry at the end of their four years of training and may find themselves in deep financial trouble.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 1 |
From: Raymond F Posa, MBA
I have to take issue with Dr. Kosova claiming that my post was full of misinformation. As a HIPAA and IT professional, providing advice and guidance to the world of podiatry for over 15 years, I always strive to provide correct and accurate information. In my prior post, I was answering a reader’s question regarding the upcoming cuts in x-ray reimbursements, and I provided broad explanations as to the reasoning behind the government’s reasoning.
Dr. Kosova, having missed the point, decided to pick out a single manufacturer's product and attempts to broadly paint all DR systems with the same brush. I can only assume Dr. Kosova’s “opinion” is based upon some...
