MN Podiatrist Runs for Crow Wing County Commissioner
Jessica Tabatt, DPM of Baxter announced her candidacy for Crow Wing County Commissioner District 3. “I am running for County Commission because I believe local government works best when it is thoughtful, practical, and focused on serving the everyday needs of our community,” Tabatt said. Dr. Tabatt graduated from the Des Moines University College of Podiatric Medicine and completed here podiatric residency at Regions Hospital in St. Paul before returning to central Minnesota to begin her professional career.

Here are nine actionable strategies to help your practice get paid faster, reduce write-offs, and keep patients satisfied in the process.
5. Train your front-desk staff to talk about money
Front-desk employees are the face of your practice, but many receive little or no training in how to discuss payment with patients. As Physicians Practice has previously reported, role-playing exercises can help staff become comfortable with collections conversations, starting with simple scenarios and moving into more difficult situations where they need to respond quickly and professionally. Staff who know exactly what to say, and who understand that collecting is a core part of their job rather than an awkward add-on, will perform better across the board.

Even in retirement, some income sources can unexpectedly raise your federal and state tax bills. Here's how to avoid costly surprises.
4. How much the IRS takes from your pension or annuity
Most pension payments are taxable as ordinary income. With annuities, the portion representing earnings (not principal) is taxed. Large pension payouts or annuity distributions can unexpectedly push you into a higher tax bracket, affecting other income sources such as your Social Security benefits.

Query: Who's Performing the Procedure?
One of my patients told me that she is scheduled for her first diagnostic colonoscopy this coming summer. She specifically chose a doctor who is well reviewed, and the procedure will be done at a teaching hospital. She is concerned that since she will be under anesthesia, she will not know if the person doing the procedure will be the doctor she is hiring, or a PA, nurse practitioner, or even a GI resident. How can this patient or any patient ensure that a procedure will be done by a physician and not a PA,, NP, or GI fellow doing it for the first time?

I’ve been using the Panacos graft and the bleomycin treatments ever since I first started practicing. I list these two together because they attempt to accomplish the exact same thing with somewhat different techniques.
Bleomycin technique: The bleomycin treatment is my primary treatment for verrucae vulgaris lesions and I currently have a 99.7% success rate over 28 years and hundreds of cases with the added benefit that if the person has multiple verrucae, treating just the one lesion will allow resolution of all of them in the course of 5-6 weeks. The procedure entails using the body’s own immune system to kill the wart and follows the path of driving some of the warty material into the dermis, where the body will identify it and raise killer T-cells to the HPV. As these circulate throughout the body, any place with a wart will be affected and the lesions will shrink and...

Mark Twain famously proclaimed, “the reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.” Do we maintain a profession whose anticipated demise has been greatly exaggerated? Reading PM News, one feels like Queegueg in Moby Dick, who rolls the bones and says “build me a coffin.” Is podiatry aboard the Pequod? The Titanic? The Edmund Fitzgerald?
PM News recently noted the death of Terry Gamache. He was a quiet dedicated podiatrist. He cared for his patients and made them comfortable. He hurt no one. He helped many. He did little or no surgery, and made a modest living. He was a generation of podiatrists past. He was a respected and trusted member of the healthcare community. I emphasize the words respected and trusted.

I recently had to go for physical therapy for a neck problem - an occupational hazard. The physical therapist I saw is hands-down the best in my community. He thinks outside-the-box. I always referred my most difficult cases to him when I was still in practice. He asked me - what is the story with The Good Feet stores in our area? He is 60-years-old, and his perception is that podiatrists are the masters of foot biomechanics and custom orthotics. It certainly was true when I graduated in 1980. I explained to him that the profession of podiatry has, over the years, given away our claim to being experts in this area and allowed the rise of retail shops like The Good Feet Store to take away that part of our practice and that part of our income.
Graduating in 1980, I understand the strong mission of our profession to become the recognized foot and ankle surgeons of choice. My residency was at Kern Hospital. It was still, however, evident to me that the success of our profession was the ability to solve our patients' problems with techniques that did not always involve surgery. That is what separated us from the orthopedic surgeons. We gave away what made us special. When I first went into practice, I taught part-time in the Department of Orthopedics at TUSPM (PCPM) in the gait lab and teaching the second-year students how to perform a proper biomechanical exam, gait analysis, orthotic casting and the actual fabrication of the devices.
