Wet Footprint Test to Determine Arch Shape: CA Podiatrist
There are a lot of features to consider when searching for shoes, but “knowing your arch type is helpful for picking out the proper shoes that will allow your feet to function the best,” says Richard H. Graves, DPM, a podiatrist at Sol Foot & Ankle Centers in Longwood, California. He also adds it can predict foot conditions you’re susceptible to, such as plantar fasciitis. Having this information can go a long way toward keeping your feet healthy.
|
Dr. Richard Graves |
There are a few different ways to do this without seeing a doctor. “The easiest way is the wet footprint test,” Dr. Graves says. That can mean checking out the footprint you leave behind on a pool deck or stepping on a piece of paper when you get out of the shower and examining it. For example, if your footprint looks like a solid wet spot, you probably have a low arch, according to Graves.

3-D Orthotic Printing Continues to Evolve: VA Podiatrist
Ben Pearl, DPM presented the evolution of 3-D orthotic printing at the Oregon State Podiatry Meeting last week. He said that the printers and software continue to evolve like a new version of the Apple I-phone. It is no surprise that orthotics can be scanned for virtual casting with the facial recognition features of an iPhone. Dr. Pearl said that when selecting a 3-D printing company, you should review the design and printing process as some software can be too complicated to use.
|
Dr. Ben Pearl |
Pearl noted that the features that make better designs include multi-density printing and being able to adjust contours of the orthotics in different areas. After talking to industry leaders, he noted that the pricing of materials and the 3-D printers will be going up with recent tariffs, so it might make sense to get set up with a system sooner rather than later if you are comfortable with the office manufacturing model. It is imperative to find a company with good technical support. He concluded that patients are intrigued when they see the 3-D printers in action and appreciate being able to get the orthotics faster than traditional orthotic manufacturing that can have delays and add shipping time.

Pro-Stretch Foot Stretcher Is Helpful for Plantar Fasciitis: MA Podiatrist
HuffPost recently asked podiatrists to recommend over-the-counter solutions for dealing with foot pain — specifically the discomfort caused by the very common condition plantar fasciitis. One such device is the Pro-Stretch. We learned from podiatrist Louis J. DeCaro, DPM, president of the American College of Foot and Ankle Pediatrics, that stretching before most physical activities can truly make the most difference when it comes to foot pain, and devices like this well-rated and podiatrist-recommended foot stretcher can help.
|
Dr. Louis DeCaro |
“The best a person can do is stretch the posterior column which runs from the hamstring down to the calf, to the Achilles and through the bottom of the foot to connect to the plantar fascia,” said Dr. DeCaro.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
How to Write an Employee Handbook for Practice Staff
Here’s how to create a comprehensive, protective document, following Associated Press style guidelines.
3A. Set clear policies and procedures
Detailing office-specific policies and procedures will ensure employees know what is expected, reducing the likelihood of misunderstandings that lead to legal claims.
Attendance and leave
-
Outline your practice’s stance on punctuality, how to call in sick and the process for requesting time off.
-
Include any separate paid time off (PTO) policy and how PTO accrual is managed.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1A |
I am sitting in shock, processing the passing of my former partner at the Southern Arizona VA, Brent Nixon. To me, Brent was the most interesting man alive. From Truk island to the Merchant Marine Academy, to becoming a self-described “helicopter driver” in Vietnam to the footwear master for the US Corps of Cadets at West Point, he was a man like Odysseus who was never at a loss. With all that, he was a master clinician. He was beloved by his patients, his residents, his mentees, and me. RIP to a great and good man.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1B |
RE: The Passing of Brent Peck Nixon, DPM
I’m saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Brent Nixon. I knew him when he was a resident at Kern Hospital, and remember him as smart, compassionate, and kind. He had a gift for bringing out the best in others, a true class act. My heartfelt condolences to his family and colleagues.
Shawna Shapero, Bako Diagnostics
My very first rotation as a fourth-year podiatry student from SCPM was with Dr. Brent Nixon at the Tucson Arizona VAMC in 1990. Dr. Nixon was a wonderful mentor to me. He was always patient and generous with praise. His example has made me a better doctor!

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL MALPRACTICE) |
From: Daniel Chaskin, DPM
In my opinion, a podiatrist would have a defense in the following situation: If a patient dies of a pulmonary embolism, the physician who medically cleared the patient for foot surgery should be responsible, not the podiatrist who referred the patient for medical clearance and relied on the MD or DO to perform the medical clearance.
Even if it is argued that a podiatrist should suspect a pulmonary embolism, the counter argument is that the physician who is licensed to treat the pulmonary embolism knew better because the state licensed them to treat such a condition. The podiatrist is not expected to know more about this complication than an MD or DO, and should rely on their opinion based on what the state deems them to be licensed to treat.
The same situation should apply to any situation the podiatrist is not licensed to treat yet makes a referral to for the purpose of medical clearance.
Daniel Chaskin, DPM, Ridgwood, NY
