PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE |
IL Podiatrist Recommends Proper Warm-Up to Prevent Pickleball Injuries
According to John M. Sigle, DPM, a recognized foot and ankle surgeon in central Illinois, “Interest in pickleball has grown significantly since the COVID pandemic. A lot of indoor and outdoor tennis courts in the area have been converted into pickleball courts.” Some experts claim that pickleball injuries have doubled in the past year. According to Dr. Sigle, “Pickleball is a pretty intense sport that has a lot of explosive lateral movements that put considerable stress on the feet and ankles, tendons and ligaments, and calf muscles.”
|
Dr. John Sigle |
Dr. Sigle recommends that you get to the courts 10-15 minutes early [to warm up] to raise your body temperature and increase blood flow to your muscles before you start your match. You can begin by doing a couple of sets of light jogging from side to side, followed by dynamic stretches, hip openers, shoulder circles, forearm and wrist circles, knee bends, ankle circles, calf stretches, side-stepping in both directions, forward and backward lunges, and mimicking pickleball movements.

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR |
NY Podiatrist Discusses Orthopedic Shoes
If you're unsure whether orthopedic shoes are right for you, the answer is simple. "Anyone who identifies as having foot pain can benefit," says Samantha Landau, DPM from Touro New York College of Podiatric Medicine. "Orthopedic shoes have features designed to provide relief to those who suffer from foot pain via support and comfort to help achieve optimal form and function. They also can aid stability, facilitate increasing walking distances and help reduce falls," she explains.
|
Dr. Samantha Landau |
Preventing side-to-side movement, or torque, is another purpose of stiffer, stable counters, according to Dr. Landau. If you are an overpronator (your foot rolls in when you're walking), have high or low arches, or experience any degree of foot, knee, hip, or back pain, you would likely benefit from orthopedic shoes, according to Landau.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
How to Write an Employee Handbook for Practice Staff
Here’s how to create a comprehensive, protective document, following Associated Press style guidelines.
2B. Anti-discrimination, Harassment, and Retaliation
-
Reference federal statutes such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Age Discrimination in Employment Act.
-
Clearly spell out how complaints—whether from patients or staff—are handled, investigated and resolved.
-
Emphasize zero tolerance for retaliation against anyone filing a good-faith complaint.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1 |
RE: The Passing of Thomas M. Pokabla, DPM
Dr. Thomas M. Pokabla passed away Monday morning, March 3, 2025, at the Cleveland Clinic, surrounded by loved ones. He then went on to podiatry school at The Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine after a chance encounter with a local podiatrist who piqued his interest in podiatric medicine.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 2A |
RIP Dr. Boxer. Great mentor. I had the privilege of training with Dr. Boxer, Dr. Barkin and Dr. Shapiro at Peninsular hospital. They were like family to me.
Damaneon Smith, DPM
Like Dr. Spinner, I too remember Mike well from my days at Peninsula Hospital as a resident. In fact, my uncle was his patient. Mike would hold office hours in the evening one or two nights per week for those who could not come in during the day due to work. I spent many days in his office. He certainly was a stickler for appropriate protocol; in fact he kept an actual timer at the scrub sink at the hospital and he would set it for 5 or 10 minutes depending if it was the first case or not and you had to scrub for the entire time until the timer went off.
He was learned and a great resource and I never found him to be arrogant, just demanding that all students and residents act like the professionals whom we swore an oath to be. He certainly contributed to where I am now. May he rest in peace.
Vince Marino, DPM, Novato, CA

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 2B |
From: Joseph D’Amico, DPM
I have been fortunate in my life to have had many great mentors, including Drs. Richard O. Schuster, Justin Wernick, and Herman R. Tax in orthopedics, Renato J. Giorgini in surgery, and Myron C. Boxer in medicine, so it was with great sadness that I learned of his passing.
I first met Dr. Boxer as a New York College of Podiatric Medicine student in his podiatric medicine course. I immediately recognized him to be always organized, always meticulously prepared, and always professional in his demeanor and attire. Little did I dream that in the not-too-distant future, I’d be director of the NYCPM orthopedics department and get to know and work side by side with “Mike”, the iconic director of...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODING & BILLING) |
From: Vincent Marino, DPM, Kristin Happel
I am not sure what state the subscriber is in, but there was an appellate court case in CA involving the City of Hope which stated that if the insurance paid in error and there was no fraud involved, then the insurance needed to recoup any monies owed to them from the previously insured person, NOT the provider. I used to be able to cite the case, but I am sure you can find it somewhere.
Vincent Marino, DPM, Novoto, CA
If you are contracted with the insurance company in question, they will eventually claw back the payment from future payments. So you will be out the money, whether you refund it, or not. Your staff needs to contact the patient immediately, and establish what insurance was active on the DOS in question, if any. If there was no active insurance, then the patient needs to pay. You can reduce the amount owed to a self-pay amount, if they were truly uninsured at that time.
The fact of the matter is that even if staff checks insurance coverage the same day a patient is seen in the office, it never guarantees that what they are seeing from the insurance company is accurate. There is often a lag between a patient losing/changing insurance, and what staff will see as active coverage. Unfortunately, this is just part of doing business. 99% of the time the coverage is active, but there is always that 1% where it is not active.
Kristin Happel, Podiatry Biller, Chicago, IL

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (AT THE COLLEGES) |
From: Allen M. Jacobs, DPM
Howard Smith is a retired gynecologist who regularly publishes on issues of malpractice. Dr. Roth tells us that he has reviewed numerous malpractice cases in which it was his opinion that unnecessary or poorly performed surgeries were the basis of malpractice claims. Every malpractice case must have a signed attestation of malpractice in some form by a healthcare provider, typically a podiatrist in podiatric malpractice cases. Dr. Smith provided some interesting data to consider, albeit for all malpractice claims, not just podiatric.
Consider the following noted by Dr. Smith: There are 85,000 malpractice cases filed every year. Of these, 56,000 are summarily dropped. 28,000 are settled. 300 are plaintiff verdicts. Therefore, only 1/3 of the 85,000 filed lawsuits are POTENTIALLY meritorious. 2/3 of the suits filed are frivolous. Yet, to file that suit, some...
