APMWA Announces 38th Annual Student Writing Competition
The American Podiatric Medical Writers Association (APMWA) has announced its 38th Annual Student Writing Competition.
-
All papers MUST be non-technical in nature and original (Not AI generated). Appropriate subjects include practice management, ethics, law, education, healthcare, or any topic that would be suitable for a lay publication.

There is no word limitation. Papers will be graded for content, style, grammar, neatness, and overall impact.

First prize one thousand dollars ($1,000), Second prize seven hundred and fifty dollars ($750) Third prize five hundred dollars ($500) sponsored by an APMA Educational Foundation endowment from Dr. and Mrs. Steven Berlin, and recognition in the APMA NEWS and the APMWA Newsletter. Honorable Mention Certificates may also be awarded.

RE: The Passing of John Ziomek, DPM
Dr. John Ziomek, 69, passed away unexpectedly in Long Beach, CA. He earned a podiatric medical degree at the California College of Podiatric Medicine, where he was awarded the National Health Services Corps (NHSC) Scholarship.

In 1982, John opened up his podiatry practice in Arroyo Grande. At the Five Cities Foot Clinic, Dr. Ziomek served thousands of patients throughout SLO County. He also worked as a contractor in the State Prison system and in later years had attending privileges at over 20 nursing homes in California.

Dr. McLean is correct. One does not have to look too far to see how Pickleball has become the fastest growing sport in America. Numerous television commercials advertising a wide range of products depict people of all ages having fun playing pickleball. I too enjoy this sport.
The problem is that people are overdoing it, especially senior citizens. Being that it is a competitive sport, people might jump, twist, and do what is beyond their physical capacity to win a point. The best advice we can give to our patients is to warm up before and after playing. Most senior citizens would not consider skiing down a mountain for the first time or jumping into a rough basketball game with teenagers .The bottom line is that anyone, young or old, who is not in the prime of his or her physical fitness, should choose to "lose a point" rather than twist a muscle or break a bone by overdoing it.

I enjoyed reading Dr. Creighton’s letter and the article he referenced. I still have my technician make my orthotics in my office. My success rates are much higher than those I have seen published and at lectures. I always thought that was because we make them in-house and I can make adjustments while the patient waits. Perhaps it is also because of the plaster casting, which I always do myself, so it is a “laying on of hands”.

My daughter was recently the patient of a family practice which failed to diagnose congestive heart failure. I was told by a malpractice attorney that we do not have a case, as a family practice is not qualified to diagnose this condition. The same daughter saw an optometrist for over 4 years, and they missed keratoconus, so now she is legally blind. Attorneys say she cannot sue optometrists, as they are not medically trained. But, yes they charge for an eye exam?
In conclusion, you cannot sue a store practicing podiatric medicine without a license. I doubt the GOOD FOOT store does any kind of exam. I doubt the patient is even asked to even remove their socks.
