VA Podiatrist Injects Adipose Tissue to Treat Plantar Fat Pad Atrophy
Aging feet is no trivial matter and can oftentimes be painful. "What happens to our feet when we age," says David Weiss, DPM, "is that the protective cushioning on the ball of the foot and heel wears down and results in various degrees of discomfort and pain. It also can result in tissue and bone damage." This condition is called plantar fat pad atrophy. Although thinning of the fat pads is a normal part of the aging process, it can also be the result of wearing heels, walking barefoot excessively, cortisone injections, autoimmune disorders, chemotherapy, and trauma.
|
|
Dr. David Weiss |
So, your feet hurt, you have trouble walking for greater lengths of time, the bottom of your feet burn, you have developed hard, painful calluses, you cannot wear your favorite shoes and the very thought of wearing a fashionable high heel has you cringing. What can you do? According to Dr. Weiss, the answer is simple, adipose (fat) injections. Done in the doctor's office, these injections have very little downtime and you can walk immediately after treatment. The adipose (fat) tissue is harvested from a tissue bank, and is safe, sterile, and does not elicit an immune response. Furthermore, once injected, this "foot filler" triggers an adipogenic response - meaning, it stimulates the body to create more fat cells in the area.

New DFU Guidelines Highlight Importance of Nutrition
New guidelines endorsed by the American Limb Preservation Society highlighted the importance of nutrition in wound healing for adults with diabetes, who also experience diabetic foot ulcers (DFU). The guidelines stated that nutritional interventions were “recommended for all patients who could benefit now or in the future from nutritional care.”
|
|
Dr. David Armstrong |
Study author David G. Armstrong, DPM, MD, PhD, American Limb Preservation Society noted the new guidelines are designed to assist the clinician to "accomplish the difficult goal of improved outpatient nutrition to support the healing DFU wound.” Particularly, the guidelines stressed the importance of a multidisciplinary care team and how clinicians communicate with patients on the conceptualization of diabetes and its management, which may play a crucial role in treatment outcomes.

NY Podiatrist Discusses How to Choose and Break in Hiking Boots
For a pain-free experience while on your nature walk, it’s good to ensure your boots fit you properly. “Hiking boots should fit snugly in width, but not tight,” Bruce Pinker, DPM, based in New York, says. “For length, there should be 3/8 inches from the tip of the longest toe to the end of the shoe.” Around the ankles, he advises selecting a pair that fits snugly, securely, and stays tight for the best support as you meander surfaces.
|
|
Dr. Bruce Pinker |
While many boots have short break-in materials, thanks to synthetic or softer materials, it may take a minute to get them feeling like second skin. Dr. Pinker advises walking in your new boots several times casually before embarking on your first hike in them. “It may take three to six usages to adequately break them in so they are comfortable while hiking,” he says. “And the type of material may determine the amount of breaking in that is necessary," he adds.

Tips to Survive February - Part 2
With only 28 days, February is a short month but it can still add to physician burnout. Here are some ways that physicians can treat February the same as any other month in terms of maintaining an effective work/life balance:
2. For at least two weekends per month, if not three or four, involve yourself in some wholesome, rewarding, outdoor activity - yes, in February. Even if your area is covered in snow, it is as good a time as any to enjoy the great outdoors. Winter holds fascination for many people: How do birds survive? Where do the squirrels go? Take advantage of your own neighborhood, town, and community. Walk the trails, visit the parks, and take in the nearby surroundings.
