PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE - PART 1
Strength and Stability Exercises Can Reduce Ankle Injuries: IL Podiatrist

According to Robert Weil, DPM, "One of the most common of injuries in sports, if not the most common, remains injury to the ankle. That alone is good reason to pay big attention to strengthening them, but that is not the only one. Strengthening both feet and ankles can enhance speed, quickness, agility, and balance, which is so important in all sports. In all my years seeing many great athletes, I’ve never seen anyone with 'over developed ankles'– it’s usually a weak link."

Dr. Robert Weil

"Young athletes, their parents, and coaches need to be educated about including foot and ankle strength and stability exercises for functional strength – the ability that allows one to move with power and speed, change direction, or stop and start while maintaining  balance. These abilities can be trained successfully with simple, inexpensive equipment like rubber bands and elastic tubing, balance boards, mini trampolines, and pieces like the innovative Sanddune StepperTM," says Dr. Weil.

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE - PART 2
Highly Cushioned Running Shoes Not for Everyone: PA Podiatrist

Choosing comfortable running shoes seems simple enough: Find the cushiest insoles possible and bounce along on your run, right? Wrong! Cushioning in running shoes is not just about pillowy insoles. It's also about adding shock absorption and a spring to your step, according to Pennsylvania-based podiatrist Tyler Austin, DPM. Too much of it can actually be detrimental to runners who don't really need it.

Dr. Tyler Austin

So, who can truly benefit from cushioned running shoes? Dr. Austin recommends these types of running shoes for heel-first and mid-foot runners because more of their foot makes contact with the ground than forefoot runners. "You don't need all the extra cushioning if you're only making impact with the ground using the balls of your feet," he advises. In addition, he suggests cushioned running shoes for anyone dealing with the loss of natural fat pads, i.e. seasoned runners whose fat pads have slightly atrophied over time, especially in the balls of their feet. "Extra cushioning in the shoe can certainly help redistribute pressure and make walking and running more comfortable on those bony surfaces," according to Dr. Austin.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
8 Tips for Avoiding Employee Handbook Crises

Many medical practices have an employee handbook, or employee policy handout, but fail to update them on a regular basis. There have been a large number of changes to employment law over the past couple of years. Here are some items you should be sure to include:

6. Benefits Have you reviewed your benefits to make sure they comply with federal and state laws? After the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that same sex marriages are legal in all states, many employers did not look at the wording of their benefits contracts. Several cases were brought against employers for having an insurance policy that did not cover same sex spouses.

If you do not have enough employees to be impacted by the Family Medical Leave Act, leave it out of your handbook and state you are not required to offer FMLA benefits. If you do have to comply with the FMLA, make sure your employees are told who to contact and that they must fill out the proper forms in order to be eligible. Look at items like bereavement leave and make sure you have taken into consideration same sex spouses.

QUERIES (EMR)
Queries: Free EMR Programs

Does anyone have experience with the "free" EMR programs like FreedomMD? The EMR software is free but one has to use their electronic claims service. There are no yearly fees. It sounds too good to be true.

Query: Disposal of Old X-ray Machines

Who do most podiatrists contact to dispose old x-ray units?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (EMR) - PART 1A
From: Alan Bass, DPM

In response to Dr. Meisler’s comments, I had not been with NEMO Health for the last several years prior to their acquisition by Modernizing Medicine. I have no affiliation or financial relationship with Modernizing Medicine, so I had nothing to disclose. If Dr. Meisler had any concerns with my post, he should have reached out to me directly.

Alan Bass, DPM, Manalapan, NJ

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (EMR) - PART 1B
From Elliot Udell, DPM

Dr. Bass is correct, Modernizing Medicine might be one of the best podiatry EHR programs. The problem with Modernizing Medicine and similar high-end programs is that for the small office practice, such as my own, these programs are not affordable. I would love to buy a new Lexus this year, but will most likely settle for a much less expensive car, based on affordability. Perhaps, the owners of Modernizing Medicine can come up with a scaled-down version that would be affordable for small practices and could be upgraded as the practice gets larger.

Elliot Udell, DPM, Hicksville, NY

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A
From: John M. Giurini, DPM

Thank you, Dr. Mullens. I could not agree with you more. I would go one step further: Stop the insults altogether. Unfortunately, society, from the highest levels of government to social media to town halls and school boards have forgotten how to discuss and debate issues rationally. This type of rhetoric makes no one look good or better, especially the individual handing out the insults. Dr. Mullens got that part right. As a profession, let's raise our standards above the unfortunate "new normal". Let's show other professionals and the public (yes, they read this). that we are able to disagree without being disagreeable.

John M. Giurini, DPM, Boston, MA

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B
From:  Alan Sherman, DPM, John Mozena, DPM

I 100% agree with Dr. Mullens' comments on insulting other podiatrists in PM News and applaud his raising of the issue. We are colleagues of an advancing increasingly appreciated profession and have no time to waste on petty squabbles. By all means, let’s disagree, for that’s how we grow – but let’s be civil, polite, and considerate to each other in this public forum. Let’s respect each other for our respective achievement and hold each other in high esteem. As Bones said in the Star Trek iterations, “God dammit it Jim, I’m a doctor, not a bricklayer.”

Alan Sherman, DPM, Delray Beach, FL

David Mullins is such a bright star for our profession! From his early years as a lecturer to his recent profession of helping all of us with his legal knowledge. His humor and wisdom should be an example for all of us. I hope all of us will remember his thought on the importance of kindness towards each other. Thank you for all you’ve done for podiatry!
