MD Podiatrists Discuss Plantar Fasciitis
You should not wake up and dread taking your first step of the day. If you do, there’s a pretty good chance you have plantar fasciitis. “Feeling pain when you take your first step in the morning is a hallmark sign of plantar fasciitis,” says Priya Parthasarathy, DPM ,a podiatrist at the Foot & Ankle Specialists of the Mid-Atlantic. “Patients tend to ignore it because it usually goes away once you start moving, but it can advance to pain after activity, during activity, or all the time.”
|
|
Drs. Priya Parthasarathy and Jacob Wynes |
If you address symptoms as soon as you feel them, plantar fasciitis is relatively easy to deal with — and conservative treatments like stretching, icing, and massaging work 90% of the time, says Jacob Wynes, DPM, a podiatric surgeon and an associate professor of foot and ankle surgery for the University of Maryland Medical System. If you suspect you have plantar fasciitis, first consult your podiatrist to rule out other issues, like nerve damage, stress fractures, bursas, and bone spurs.

IL Podiatrist Recommends Hiking Shoes for Winter
Winter walking shoes usually borrow elements from hiking boots and standard walking shoes, explains Melissa Lockwood, DPM, a podiatrist at Heartland Foot and Ankle Associates in Bloomington, IL. A deep tread is helpful for grip, along with water resistance or waterproofing to keep out ice, sleet, and snow. Making the switch to a hiking shoe isn't a bad idea for winter.
|
|
Dr. Melissa Lockwood |
Skip over shoes with an airy mesh upper—they’ll only let in cold and damp weather. Instead, you want to look for walking shoes that have water resistance or waterproofing, per Lockwood. These can still feel breathable. You just don’t want them to be too breathable. Lockwood recommends looking for a firm, deep toebox to protect the front of your feet from hard, frozen objects. “A lot of times we see injuries because the toe box isn't stiff enough,” she says.

RI Podiatrist Reprimanded for Failure to Document Patient Opioid Use
A licensed podiatrist in the state has been issued a reprimand by the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) - for violating state pain management regulations and state law. According to RIDOH, it received a complaint alleging that Stephen Rogers, who has been licensed in the state since 1995, “inappropriately prescribed controlled substances to certain [sic] of his patients.” Rogers has been ordered to pay administrative fees of $1,110 and was required to complete and pass courses on controlled substances prescribing and maintaining boundaries for healthcare professionals, which RIDOH says he has completed.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
Tips for merging your medical practice without losing your people or patients
Here are some practical tips to help physician owners and administrators plan, close, and integrate the right way.
5) Treat tech integration like a go-live, because it is a go-live
You can merge charts in a week. You can’t merge workflows and systems without a plan. Whether it’s the electronic health record, phone system, patient portal, billing platform, templates, reporting, or even just how messages route through the practice, this is where productivity can slide if you underestimate the lift. Put someone in charge, set a realistic timeline and be honest with clinicians about what changes when. If you want two practical reads that match what administrators deal with in the real world, lean on “Expanding your practice? Here’s how to manage an unruly tech stack” and “Consolidating technology as part of a practice merger.”

10 Things You Need to Practice Medicine That Money Can't Buy
Here are some valuable tips that have aided Savannah Santiago, DPM in navigating her experiences as a student and a resident:
6. Know Your Why
I truly love podiatry, and I have no doubt that this is the career I was meant to pursue. I’ve written multiple articles about why I chose this path and what continues to drive me to show up every single day. That “why” isn’t just a nice sentiment—it’s something I actively lean into when the days get long, the nights on call feel endless, and I start to question how I’ll keep going.
Knowing your why helps anchor you when everything else feels like it's spinning. Hold onto it. Write it down. Talk about it. Let it guide you through the hard days, because they will come—and your “why” is what will carry you through them.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC MEDICAL EDUCATION) | |
RE: Earning a Plenary License
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD
It was my second year at OCPM (1974-75) when Jerry Ferritto, then a third-year student, floated the idea of having a plenary license by us. Evidently, there were several MD internships which went unfilled and there was a movement to have the positions filled by DPM graduates who, upon completion, would be allowed to function as DPMs with a plenary license. That was over 50 years ago, but true to its history, podiatry continues to move at glacier speed apathetic in its complacency.
In order to earn a plenary license in the 21st century, an initial move has to be made through undergraduate matriculation as a DO, and there are enough seats available to totally eradicate podiatry if we allow it. In order to preserve this profession and philosophy, it makes more sense to first approve an ACGME podiatric residency, then begin a slow transition of some DO graduates into that podiatry residency while transitioning the remaining podiatry schools. My fear is that podiatry will cease to exist because college graduates will flock to DO schools, leaving podiatry as a historical footnote.
The other maneuver podiatry excels in is burying our heads in the sand. One does not have to be clairvoyant to see DPMs are headed toward extinction. If we are truly altruistic, as we should be, we must save the profession by safeguarding if for future podiatrists who may be in high school today. None of us will reap the benefits of DO podiatry, but in order to affect the future, we must think past our present insecurities.
Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD, Columbus, OH

From: Allen M. Jacobs, DPM
The recent discussion of the Lymphedema Act and the ability of the podiatric physician to be reimbursed for the dispensing of certain products such as compression garments as an aid for the management of lymphedema is helpful for understanding the economic and coding aspects of lymphedema. However, I believe the clinical issues discussed in this article require a more detailed and accurate discussion.
