PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
No Evidence That Running is Associated with Chronic Knee Pain: MN Podiatrist

Some blame high-impact activities like running and high-intensity workouts for their chronic knee pain. However, The Manual spoke to an expert who asserts that this direct running-to-joint-pain correlation is a myth.

Dr. Paul Langer

“Despite common presumptions, there is no scientific evidence that high-impact activities such as running increase the risk of knee pain/injury/arthritis. You have to keep in mind the knee is designed to be a weight-bearing joint so it is perfectly capable of managing the forces associated with walking and running,” says Paul R. Langer, DPM, board-certified podiatrist, clinical advisor for the American Running Association, and an associate of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.

PODIATRISTS AND THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC
AL Podiatrist Encourages Others to Get COVID-19 Vaccine

"Because I wanted to live," said Montgomery podiatrist Ace Anglin, DPM of Mulberry Foot Care. That's why he chose to take the COVID-19 vaccine. He got the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine on December 18th and received the second dose on January 8th. "I knew we had something when high profile physicians were signing up for it.

Dr. Ace Anglin

Dr. Anglin says many of his patients' conditions put them at high risk. That's why he's encouraging his patients to get the vaccination when it becomes available and not to be fearful.

RELEVANT RESEARCH
Palmoplantar Erythrodysesthesia as a Diagnostic Sign in COVID-19

In this review of 666 adult patients admitted with viral pneumonia due to COVID-19 infection, 304 (45.7%) presented with mucocutaneous involvement. Of these 304 patients, 121 (39.8%) had palmoplantar involvement, and 22 (7.2%) reported an early burning sensation of the palms and soles with or without redness or swelling around the time of symptom onset.

Reddish-to-brown acral macules (arrows) and plantar fine desquamation in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia.

Based on this study, palmoplantar erythrodysesthesia appears to be an additional mucocutaneous manifestation of COVID-19. Examination of the palms and soles in patients with suspected COVID-19 infection may provide useful information.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL)
From: Judd Davis, DPM

I too read that same article. I recently had 2 patients who had elevated LFTs before starting Lamisil. In the past, I would not have prescribed it to them. However, after reading that article, I decided to proceed but retested them 1 month into treatment. The first patient's LFTs actually normalized, go figure. The second patient's LFTs went up substantially. I did not prescribe the additional 2 months of treatment and recommended he discuss the situation with his PCP for further evaluation. Fortunately, he had no symptoms of abdominal pain or other sign of liver injury. I will not likely be prescribing it again in those patients with elevated LFTs.

RE: Time for Podiatry to Say Something About DM Shoe Requirements
From: Michael J Marcus, DPM

As a podiatrist, I have been dispensing diabetic-approved shoes to our patients since the inception of this federally funded program. After 40 years of practice, some of my patients have received shoes from our office for the past 15 to 20 years. Each year, the requirements seem to change by some degree. In the beginning of the program, a confirmation form signed by the MD treating physician, recognizing that patients fit the criteria was all that was needed. Over time, the one form has now become a packet of forms including copies of notes to hopefully confirm the need and satisfy Medicare requirements.

As a profession, we abide by these procedures. Meeting after meeting, we discuss the procedures that are required. And even with good reporting our claims are often denied or deemed not complete. I do understand that in some communities, abuse may be a factor. However, if I have a diabetic patient that has lost a part of their foot and has required a DM shoe in 2015, why would one need to question the need for...

PODIATRISTS AND THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC
From: Tilden H Sokoloff, MD, DPM

I live in Sun Valley Idaho, the first ski resort in America. Here is the dilemma; a DPM needs further certification to give a COVID-19 vaccination. He or she can amputate a foot, do reconstructive surgery, limb salvage operations, give thousands of injections, prescribe anything they can justify, have unlimited DEA registration, do a complete H&P to admit a patient to the hospital, rotate on every medical service as a resident, be forced to take a three year residency for licensure, but ambulance drivers can give each other a COVID vaccination.

What am I missing except a huge public relations problem and probably an inter-professional one to boot. Time to up the ante and gain a plenary license. If not now in such a disrupted medical time, when? It is a call to action at the national medical level and the state level.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1A

Joe was a member of our beloved CCPM Class of 1983. All who knew him experienced his kindness, love, loyalty, and his tireless efforts to improve our profession. Our love and prayers go out to Pam and their children and grandchildren. RIP my friend!

Ross Taubman, DPM

I literally broke down and cried when I saw the news that Joe had passed. He and his wife Pam were always such friendly faces at all our CPMA and APMA meetings. I will miss his hugs and the genuine joy he and his wife made me feel every time I saw them. He was a definite influence on me, and instilled a heartfelt love to serve into everyone he met. We all will sorely miss him at the doors of our CPMA convention hall greeting us all with his signature white Panama hat. God Bless you Joe!

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1B

RE: The Passing of Joseph M. Hughes, DPM (Stephan Wan, DPM)

As one can see from Dr. Stephen Wan's letter, Joe Hughes will be greatly missed by the profession that he loved and fought for. He was an integral part of the CCPM Class of '83 which produced several leaders of the profession, including the current APMA president. Joe himself did not seek the limelight but Joe worked just as hard behind the scenes for the good of the class, the school, and ultimately the profession.

Dr. Wan listed many of Joe's professional contributions. Personally, he was a caring, easy going individual who cared deeply for his classmates. He also cared deeply for the profession and residents, giving back to the profession many times over. My deepest sympathies to his wife Pam and his sons. He will always be remembered.
