PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Areas of Financial Waste to Cut at Your Practice
Here are a few ways to reduce financial waste, according to practice management and accounting professionals from across the country:
3. Shop for Better Prices.
"Medical facilities tend to overpay because they are stuck in their ways and stay loyal with a supplier without shopping around. You can join a group purchasing organization (GPO), which are all over the country, and pay 20 to 40 percent less. It's just a matter of familiarizing yourself with GPOs and what they can be used for. It's more than medical supplies. You can get discounts on cell phones and cable and Internet for you office." - Thomas Moore, CEO of healthcare management firm The Caduceus Group, Atlanta, GA

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) |
RE: The Passing of Edward Fazekas, DPM
Dr. Edward Fazekas passed away peacefully yesterday with his loving wife Maria at his side. Ed touched so many people with his kind soul- most importantly as the ultimate family man; a super-caring husband and incredible father to each of four beautiful children. Dr. Fazekas was the most compassionate physician, developing lifelong relationships with each of his patients, relationships which we all strive for. He was a pillar of greatness within the medical community, forming trustworthy bonds of friendship with everyone he met.

Dr. Edward Fazekas |
I am truly blessed and so fortunate to have had the incredible opportunity to spend my entire 29 years of private practice alongside Ed. He was everything you could hope for as a trustworthy friend, a successful colleague, a...

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL) |
Query: Service/Consultant to Negotiate with Insurance Companies
Is anyone familiar with a service/consultant who would contact my insurance companies to help negotiate better rates for my private practice? My staff is getting nowhere, as usual.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
From: Alan Sherman, DPM
The ever thoughtful and astute Rod Tomczak, DPM opines on the reasons for the declining applicants to podiatry schools. I agree that the huge numbers of spots that have opened up in DO schools and the innumerable offshore medical schools have provided a more attractive option for many that might have considered podiatry school. We should all have the patience to accept the things that we cannot change. But I am more concerned about the fact that we have come to REQUIRE that ALL PODIATRISTS be 3-year trained surgeons. I have been saying for years, and I believe that we will come to learn, that we have made a big mistake by single tracking all podiatrists into this one training program. By doing so, we have eliminated from consideration many of the candidates that have no interest in surgery or don't think they are well suited to be surgeons.
Why are we putting any future non-surgical podiatrists through 3 years of rigorous, demanding surgical training? To stress them? To test their mettle? Do we truly no longer want non-surgical podiatrists? I personally can't imagine a podiatry profession without non-surgical podiatrists. Apropos to this, see Jarrod Shapiro's Practice Perfect 945: Surgical Versus Non-surgical Podiatry: Should There Be a Separation?
