TX Podiatrist Opens New Practice in Kerrville
Angela Schladoer, DPM has opened Heart of the Hills Podiatry PLLC in Kerrville, bringing her expertise in wound care and podiatric medicine back to the Hill Country community where she grew up. Dr. Schladoer graduated from the Dr. William Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in 2006 and completed her podiatric residency in 2008, which included time in South Dakota and Arizona. She practiced in Eagle Pass for four years, where she adopted twin daughters, then opened a practice in Fredericksburg in 2011.

After being severely injured in an auto accident, she pivoted to academic medicine, teaching at Schreiner University, then at Sanford School of Medicine in South Dakota, and later at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Does HIPAA allow a podiatrist to mandate a future or current patient give their credit card information for a podiatrist to keep so that patients can be charged for missed appointments, co-payments, and deductibles?

Editor’s Comment: PM News does not provide legal advice. HIPAA generally allows podiatrists and other healthcare providers to require a credit card on file for future charges, as long as the information is handled securely. However, New York State law (where you are currently located) significantly restricts this practice.
• Patient's medical identity must still be protected under HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules.
• Authorization: Providers must obtain clear, written consent from the patient that explicitly details when and how the card will be charged (e.g., for no-shows or after insurance has paid its portion).

Dr. Crawford brings up an issue which, while interesting, is insignificant for most physicians (MD/DO/DPM) who provide DME to their own patients. Space in this forum only allows me to touch on the highlights of this issue and there is much more than what is presented below.
Let me set the record straight so that most if not all DPMs reading this DO NOT PANIC and understand they are NOT required to undergo Facility Accreditation by an accreditation organization unless they voluntarily want to. Most other DME providers, including but not limited to pedorthists, wound care suppliers, and your local neighborhood DME brick and inventory store, require facility accreditation by an accredited organization.
Let me repeat, physicians are exempt and do not require facility accreditation when providing DME as an ancillary service to their OWN patients. Those last two words are key. If you are...
